RIM BlackPad tablet priced at $499 when it ships in November?
Come on, admit it, you want to believe that RIM is working on a tablet called the BlackPad don't you? You'd better, because Apple Daily is piling on with more unsubstantiated rumor this morning. So, in addition to the 9.7-inch display, Bluetooth, WiFi, and front- and rear-facing cameras already mentioned by Bloomberg's sources, Apple Daily claims that Quanta won the bid to manufacture the tablet with plans to ramp up for 2 million units starting in September (for a November retail launch) with another 8 million planned for 2011. The price? $499 is the target, naturally.

MORE VAPOR CRAP!!!
Can I use it in the Mid East?
If the torch is is Rims idea of ground breaking and innovative. Consider me not impressed.
The Taiwanese source page says it'll run Android.... ;)
i hope it runs android, rim os is not very tablet friendly
@fogozito You are right... OS6 IS NOT VERY FRIENDLY TOUCH...
Hey Engadget, questions aren't news articles.
@Shalabi
This is a blog....
All this talk of "tablets" makes me want an aspirin.
@ed2010
Tablet originally refer to a computer with touch screen function so that you can use it while you are standing or write on it. It is something different to a notebook or netbook (features or the way to use it).
Current 'tablet' is just a larger phone (may even cannot be used as a phone). I really hope people don't call such kind of thing as a tablet. The difference between a tablet to a mobile phone/ipod touch should not be just their size. Please call them slates/pads or whatever name, but not tablets.
if it runs blackberry os 6 its a no go however i really love web os and would buy a tablet with that in a blink
How is it that BB has a decent tablet out and Android doesn't? HTC please show us how its done.
@torres09
Perhaps the answer is that RIM doesn't have a tablet out or are you from the future?
LOL other than a pad...what else can this junk do?
What app does it have?
At least the app store have tons of app to make me enjoy the ipad
@yhap2003 it has blackberry app world
@possomcrast ahh.....oh gosh...i hope it's not call blackpad. It sounds so racist
@yhap2003
yeh should have called it politicallycorrectpad.
what do you think of the word blackberry then?
I guess i best stop describing my jeans as black in colour cause you know, i might offend you.
@yhap2003
You know what blackberry do right?
you know what they are famous for yes? (other than the obvious keyboard) secure email, communications.
It's not like apple created all those apps. If you have a successful products app may eventually come if the product is done right. just like android, just like any other application mobile store out there.
The ipad relies heavily on the app store but otherwise its a very casual multimedia device. you even said it yourself, you needs apps to enjoy the ipad. it doesn't magically have all them preloaded for you.
RIM can do all that and more and perhaps with time could possibly have some quality apps to please you too. but hey, its halfway there to pleasing you, if you already have an ipad, but im assuming you don't have a blackberry and as such the other half just doesn't speak to you... yet :)
I hope it doesnt have that gay ass click screen the storm had lol
@possomcrast
The BlackPad can also be used as a springboard and a trampoline. This is why it'll be a totally killer product.
If this thing runs a derivative of OS6 it will be a killer device. However I do not see a front facing camera.
@rederikus
That's because that picture is a Storm with an arrow saying the 3.5" screen is 9.7". Are you interested in buying a piece of a great bridge I own in Brooklyn?
they better hope this thing isn't SurePress like the damn storm.
If OS6 is outdated crap on a bad phone, I can't wait to see how shitty it is on a tablet. Bet they throw a 600mhz processor in this thing or something.
As if anyone would buy an RIM product sans keyboard. Sure, the Storm sucks, but let's try a bigger one. On the upside, RIM has sweetened the deal by adding a new feature: SureFail. Personally, I can't wait.
why on earth is this a first on apple daily? where's the blackberry blogs/resource sites at on this news?
Engadget probably trawls apple sites first anyways.
also this may not appeal to apple users nor windows users but has anyone actually thought about blackberry users perhaps finding a bigger screen to view their secure content might be interested in this.
I swear half these comments actually forget that maybe rim would like to extend that experience further just like apple extended their IOS experience to the ipad and its eco-system.
as a productivity device, i think rim might be on a winner if they release something like this. if its not for you, you're probably not a blackberry user in the first place BUTTTTT. if they intend to make this a multimedia carry around device in the same vein as the iphone, it could very well soak up some of that market.
I was thinking to get an iPad this week. This complicates things. And where is Google's pad?
I like 99% of the what the iPad offers in specs and features. I do not like that if I want to create new documents in Google docs, I can't. I am hopin that the BlackPad or a GPad would allow this.
@MLamont their tablet will be trash just like their touch-based smartphones, this does not complicate anything
The reason I don't like the iPad is because of it's insain price. Now RIMs making one and it will be the same insain price? Isn't anyone gonna learn?
@Coolist
...insain. *snicker*
will blackberry apps available for black pad??
i just hope they dont give it that stupid surepress. plain ol' capacitive
I want it & I would like it to be able to make calls...
Oh yeah, "Blackpad" is a cool name...
They could do a lot with that name...
BlackBoard I say! BLACKBOARD!
@johnwphillips
blackBORED
Jumbo size. Too bad RIM don't want to ANDROID OS in their hardware be nice if they do that makes them more money.
Since RIM likes to put sub par hardware into it's products Wi-Fi at 802.11b,33.6 modem jack ,128 RAM, 64 ROM, 4GB of space.....and the enjoyment of a larger battery pull. A while ago I would have been like wow now ehhh not so much Windows or Android tablet has a better chance then this.
Am I the only one interested in this a little?
where the hell is that Windows 7 Tablet already
I can see this being awesome with a Storm-like touchscreen. I for one found it incredibly tricky to type on an iPad at any decent speed.
Unless RIM has a revamped OS for their tablet they mine as well call it a day because if the product is $500 and does pretty much the same thing the current BB phones do with some additional apps then they've already lost to Apple.
Foleo 2
One of the few pleasures I get from being a possibly-soon-to-be-former blackberry user is the luscious keyboard, delightful text entry with spell check in all applications, and the ability to use it with one hand.
I hope they are planning an EPIC upgrade soon or else this will be DOA. Maybe I'm the wrong person to ask as to me the ipad was DOA.
I'm not really enthusiastic about this, due to the fact that the OS might cripple all these nice specifications built into this tablet.
Wow, what a name...
I'd rather go with a slightly cheaper option!

BB, let's make a big ass SurePress touch screen.
