Dell Streak on sale August 13 for $300 on AT&T contract, $550 without
After a brief delay in getting the ball rolling stateside, Dell's finally ready to start selling its Streak this Friday to all comers. If you go for a new two-year contract through AT&T, you'll be paying $299.99; if you value your freedom, though, you'll be looking at $549.99 out the door -- oh, and if you signed up for the pre-sale, you'll be able to place your order a day earlier on the 12th. Unfortunately, we don't have any indication that it'll be launching with anything newer than Android 1.6, so let's hope that juicy 2.1 update with 720p video capture wastes no time getting rolled out. Follow the break for the full press release.

i'm so excited to hold a laptop to my face :D
@avinationcom Meh, I think it's an awesome device, but WAY too expensive.
I would pick up one of these as a nice PMP, but it would have to be like 1/3 the price.
DOA fail
@avinationcom
Looks like Dell blew it... again, and again, and again....
@The Advanced Kind I have an Evo, so I'm more excited for my friends to get it so I can play with it :p
4.3" was a big enough jump for me, I still sometimes fidget with it so my thumb can reach the corners. I cut out a piece of cardboard with the dimensions and this thing really is a micro tablet with a sim card.
@avinationcom lol. I welcome the large phone, I know a lot of people don't.
Hey Dell! Streak + Win7 on Verizon. You know you want to.
@avinationcom
You're going to hold the 'streak' up to your face? Heh. Think stains.
Oddly, I haven't seen any jokes about that. Maybe I'm just weird...
@JONNNathannn
dear lord, Win7 on a 5" screen? Are you out of your mind??
@The Advanced Kind Right... for that price you'll get Blackberri iStorm running Android and WinMo.. But it will come with dual sim slots so you can share it with your friend
@avinationcom
Heres what I don't get. This phone is free on contract in the UK, But here in the US it costs $300?
@avinationcom
Didn't the Dell streak free on contract in UK (from O2)? Why $300 in the US? I really want this device but not for that price.
This thing is CRAZY.
And not in a good way.
@avinationcom
this thing failed. should have make it like 7"+ to market as tablet instead.
To big to be a useful phone, too small to be a useful tablet. And the $300 on contact price seals this turd up quite nicely.
Is it possible — like intel did with pc makers — that Apple is paying ATT so that they don't offer the streak at a competitive price. Because I don't understand. And Since I was going to use the streak mostly as a web browsing and map navigation device connected to a hotspot capable smartphone, for $550 unlock I can't help but compare the value to the $500 ipad wifi only, sure the streak is more portable but still…
come to think of it, the ipad don't have free map nav. Hum… I think I'll wait for a price drop on the streak.
@CJisohsocool That's American carriers for you.
@NextGen
Still $49 less than an unlocked Droid 2.
@NextGen
no, it's not possible, since Apple doesn't give two shits about the Dell Streak.
@The Advanced Kind Yeah it's much too expensive. I could get ATT's most expensive netbook for half the price. I think something in the $225-250 would have been fair.
When this was first announced I was actually thinking of getting one of these as a PMP too lol. Wish they would have sold a wifi only version.
@The Advanced Kind - HELLO! MY guess is, the price will go down once they dont sell to many. And they probably wont (until the price goes down) about $50. I think $250 is reasonable considering the screen is 5" and it is one of the only pieces of hardware with a front facing camera besides the iphone.
@NextGen - actually, all phones of that class cost roughly the same amount. Nice addition to AT&T Android family.
@TomSawyer
"no, it's not possible, since Apple doesn't give two shits about the Dell Streak."
Well, what do you know?

Next time, check ur facts before downranking someone.
@vkelman
"actually, all phones of that class cost roughly the same amount. Nice addition to AT&T Android family."
Sure but the $300 on contract is a bad move. Seriously, do you think it'll sell a lot at that price point? I don't think so.
Just take a look at the comments here. $550 unlocked and unbranded(!?) is fair indeed.
@NextGen What? What does an advertisement have to do with anything? I'm downranking you, check your common sense before commenting, that's like someone saying "no the iPhone really is coming to verizon, bloomberg said so, check your facts"
@NextGen If that's true then they did you a favor. This thing is a piece of garbage.
I don't know how AT&T and Dell came to this price point of $299 WITH a contract but it's pretty much DOA at this point. The only people who probably buy this are the ones like you and me who knew about it since it was leaked back in November last year or early this year. But I'm not buying it. Dell dun goofed up too many times.
You know what the average consumers going to think?
"Hmmm... $199 for iPhone... or $299 for Streak... hmmm...?"
Now, whether you believe it or not, the average consumer is always the target because if you get them, you can sell your device like hotcakes. Due to not pricing it competitively, I don't think this is going to cause any mass waves of shortages or out of stock scenarios and if it does, it's because they played it safe and didn't make much of them.
@That guy 2
This was in response of Tom' comment; can't do much for u if u don't get it; happy downranking :).
@Plazmic Flame

Totally aggreed
@avinationcom Why does this cost more than an iPad? It can't be because it has phone capabilities. HSPDA radios are pretty cheap.
@avinationcom
Set to run straight out in front of that oncoming iPod Touch 4 traffic... All while holding up that little "Contract" flag. Sort of sad, in a way.
@hey buddy I should explain: I don't feel a lot of people will want this as a phone, but might like the idea of this thing as an iPad/iPod Touch device. Nearly anyone looking at this thing already has a phone. I just don't see the market desire for this thing being that large.
@avinationcom
FRIDAY the 13th o.O
@avinationcom too big for a phone too small for a tablet, more expensive than iPad and almost any smartphone with a year old OS?!?
@The Advanced Kind this is NOT a PMP, this is an high end phone like Samsung's Galaxy S. The price is right if you look at the Streak for what it is.
$300 on contract?? NO DEAL!
@Zachary
For me $550 without contract = Deal!
@Zachary i was so excited for the Streak until i found out it was $300 on contract. i will most likely bail on AT&T and get a Samsung Epic with Sprint when it launches.
@Zachary
Although I'm not too fond of the pricing, above all else they should have followed through and made the T-Mobile version!!!
Unlimited data is what this thing needs!!!
@Zachary
I can't believe it was $300. $550 is the price of other phones that are selling for $199 under contract. Guess ATT wasn't willing to put up the extra $100 to help sell android phones. I would never buy an android phone w/att. Between locking features & slow updates they just keep pulling the rug out from android powered phones
@mnhthebest You might as well buy an iPad IMO.
@mnhthebest Considering the nexus one was $500 off contract, the dell is the better deal
@Zachary
AT&T? NO DEAL!
@dswatson83
I love how people still think the side loading lock on att is still an issue. Easy to bypass that lock
@Zachary
It is a bit much with a 2 year plan, but it only commands a $50 difference over the Captivate when purchased without a contract. Makes me wonder what kind of subsidizing deal Dell is making here.
@dswatson83 ? I paid $300 for my G1... I don't have a problem paying $300 for this, its much bigger with a faster CPU and is real option over other Android tablets.
My grip is again putting on AT&Ts Network to try and get a larger customer base, instead of making it open to all GSM networks.
Until its available on T-Mobiles UNCROWDED network, no dice.
@mnhthebest but its locked, thats a dealbreaker, no?
@dswatson83
AT&T phones as a rule are priced with no contract at $150 above the UP FRONT 2yr contract pricing. The exceptions at this point are the iPhone and the Captivate. Everything else falls under those guidelines.
@sean4123 That is your opinion. Luckily some people have their own opinions, like me and the op. Personally I'll probably buy this unlocked though I still have to wait for the T-Mobile addition.
5" is to big for a phone and too small for a tablet... I'd need at least a 7" for it to be considered a tablet in my eyes. Even though i'm rocking a droid x and i thought 4.3 was too big for a phone and it turned out to be perfect. I'd have to have it in my hands to make a decision.
@Rudolphe22 While 4.3 is probably an optimal size, I'd go with 5". Think of this as tablet that you can drag anywhere you go (sorry, but I can't see myself carrying 7" tablet all the time)
On the other hand, I can only dream about those sizes... in Canada 4" is still the biggest phone screen you can get.
And if you don't mind, I'll do just that - go and dream about HTC Evo...
