Dell Streak on sale August 13 for $300 on AT&T contract, $550 without
After a brief delay in getting the ball rolling stateside, Dell's finally ready to start selling its Streak this Friday to all comers. If you go for a new two-year contract through AT&T, you'll be paying $299.99; if you value your freedom, though, you'll be looking at $549.99 out the door -- oh, and if you signed up for the pre-sale, you'll be able to place your order a day earlier on the 12th. Unfortunately, we don't have any indication that it'll be launching with anything newer than Android 1.6, so let's hope that juicy 2.1 update with 720p video capture wastes no time getting rolled out. Follow the break for the full press release.

At this point, launching a phone running Android 1.6 at launch, with a "promised" upgrade to 2.1, not even Froyo later, is just not good news.
I'm surprised that they mentioned 2GB worth of memory as one of it's notable features but left out the whole Gorilla Glass thing. A virtually unbreakable screen is something to make people aware of especially since the entire iPhone can shatter with on drop if you're unlucky.
Commit to 2 years with AT&T AND shell out $300? I would have loved to be at the meeting where they came up with this marketing plan.
Once the device comes out, I'd challenge any of you to go test it out before you knock it for coming with Android 1.6. I know a Dell employee who has one and I was blown away by it. I currently have a Moto DROID on Verizon and it absolutely blew my DROID (which is running 2.2) away. The skin over the top of the 1.6 is fantastic. There is virtually no functionality that I could find that the Streak does not have that my DROID does---at least nothing that mattered.
Whether it comes out with 1.6 or 2.1 is irrelevant---there's nothing worthwhile until it gets to 2.2.
@RebelT
I will take that challenge (mostly because I was going to go look at it anyway). The problem with shipping with 1.6 is that this thing may never get updated to 2.2 which is what phones are going to start shipping with here very soon (Droid 2 already does). You can never really count on more than one OS version upgrade for an Android handset. The odds of this ever getting Gingerbread are virtually zero. That's a big problem when asked to spend the next two years with a phone.
@Frogboy
Fair enough. While you can obviously never take Dell 100% at their word, they speak pretty definitively about it getting an update to 2.2, so I would expect it for sure, it's just a matter of when.
@RebelT
The Streak is still the AT&T Android that has the best chance of me getting. If Samsung fixed the GPS in the Captivate, it might pull a head due to size and pricing. It does look like a nice phone.
$500 for that?
I'd (sadly) rather get an iPad for the price... :'(
I would trade my iPhone 4 in 2 seconds for this. Yum
@chadam Have the iPhone police shown up at your door yet?
I'd buy it if it had Froyo. I'll bet HTC has it's Desire HD out with Froyo before Dell gets it.
Are you happy to see me or is that a Dell Streak in your pocket? Isn't it worth $300 just to get someone to ask that?
Why is it 300$ on contract and 550$ off when the iPhone is around a similar price off contract?
Dell logo next to my ear look stupid!
"5' is to big for a phone"... I think Zach Morris would beg to differ;)
@mustangs
His phone was five inches thick. :)
The red version is really tempting me... 499€ here in France (taxes included, no subsidies). Must resist, must resist... I need an Android device to develop an app for my rock band so this one could be the choose one ^^
Damn i wish this beast would have Windows Phone 7, i'm not blown away by Android at all... Should I streak ou should i go ???
It's selling for 450 British Pounds in UK! And you Americans are complaining having to pay US$500!
But all the better, more sets available if demand is less, right?
I'll be streaking soon!
I'd like this to replace my old Nokia N810. Kinda don't want to pay for two data plans though.
Kudos to Dell for going nuts with the specs though...I guess they like 'em big in Texas!
You're better off flipping an iPhone 4 and then buying this.
soo i signed up for the pre-order but kinda confused about it, it says 2 day shipping so i would get it on Saturday? how does that make sense if i can buy it at AT&T on Friday? or is it going to only be for sale online for a while??? someone help!
Even for $550 it's locked to AT&T. Streak is SO not going to sell.
I'm gonna wait until they make this for tmobile. Also tax kills it.
I've just ordered the Streak from the special pre-sale they offered. I'll let you all know how it goes! p.s. They gave me the option to keep my exisiting data plan! (currently have a blackberry) Let's see how the billing goes..... ;-P
Dell Chat Support:
