Mercedes SLS AMG and Isle of Man take center stage in 'world's fastest 3D car film'
Frankly, you could've stopped at "Mercedes SLS AMG" and "Isle of Man," but toss in ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, a litany of 3D cameras, helicopters and a closed section of the Mountain Road... and well, you've got magic in the making. The crew here set out to create the "world's fastest 3D film," and honestly, we aren't in any position to doubt 'em. We're also guessing that this 4 minute and 2 second masterpiece will be looped in Benz dealerships around the world, and for good reason. Word has it that the clip will be shown on Sky 3D across the pond, but there's no telling when it'll grace three-dee screens in North America and beyond. While we wait, feast your senses on the 2D version just beyond the break.

While it's hard to complain about fast cars and 3D, the video quality here is abysmal given my expectations. The white balance seems all over the place, there's noticeable grain and the cinematography is just...boring.
If I saw this looping in a local dealer's showroom, I'd be surprised.
Pistonheads on Engadget - fuck yeah!
Just to correct a few people, it's actually a 6.2 litre engine but is badged as a 63 for continuity purposes.
@JBaker
The next generation of this engine will be a 5.5 litre bi-turbo but the cars will still be badged '63'.
@JBaker
I hate AMG for downsizing all their engines. Poor S Class. 5.5 just isn't right... That 6.3 V12 badge is one heck-ov-a sight.
@Peril
It's a V8, but I think you know that because you wrote it below ;)
@JBaker
Yeah, I was talking about the V12 in the SL65 and S class. My bad for not mentioning.
That neighbor of mine is one classy man. He ownes the SL65AMG and the SLS. It's fun to look out the window and see what car he's in the mood for that day. I'm going to ask for a ride tomorrow.
Everyone ready to be jealous? My neighbor has this car and OOOH DOES IT PURR! That naturally aspirated V8....... My goodness it sounds like the earth is shaking. Thor is angry.
Did anyone else notice they have more than one SLS? Droooool.
Look at "making of"
@Peril
I'm not too surprised given that the video is made by Mercedes. They might have a couple of those around...
Neeowwwwn
Should've been made by Top Gear!
Wow, if only we had a new Need for Speed Porsche, except with all the good manufacturers. That, or Gran Turismo/Forza Motorsport get some beautiful point to point tracks.
I'm actually from the Isle of Man myself. 140mph over the snaefell mountain track is a walk in the park by most "young" drivers over here.
Boring Vid.
@Cupid not sure why you typed "young" w/ quotation marks. are they really not young? are they young in an ironic way? is it only the Young family that drives that fast?
@NoNameJim
Its due to the more "mature" drivers, driving a safer speed.
Now I'm just waiting for Top Gear to race this bad boy head on against a Lexus LFA :D
Mercedes should've outsourced to the producers of Top Gear, cause as an avid watcher of the show... that was weak
is this me or the last minute doesn't show at all on the first film, not the 'making'? The image freezes at 3:00 minutes, out of 4:01, we don't get the bouquet final, if any, mister Mercedes Benz PR.
Steve drives an SL not an SLS.
Steve drives an SL not an SLS.
The world's most beautiful car reborn and in 3D. Awesome.
Recently in switzerland:
A swedish businessman was stopped by the police doing 290kph - the speed limit is 120. Since in switzerland speeding with more than 25kph over the limit is considered a crime, the fine will be according to the income of the offender. In this case, they confiscated his SLS, his driving license and he may face a fine in excess of 1 million swiss francs. Thats just shy of one million dollars.
This is kinda dumb... Firstly whilst the past has seen cars drive the isle of man circuit, the course is predominantly known/famous for motorbike racing and no one appears to have told DC hes driving it the wrong way...
Secondly from what I saw in the vid the speedo barely goes above 140mph, which as anyone who has ever seen either races or practice sessions for the bikes will tell you is pretty pedestrian (the top end race bikes will usually reach 180+ on sections of the mountain and 200 on Sulby Straight). In fact anyone who's ever driven or ridden the one way mountain section during race week, as i have, will tell you 140 would be slow for some non competitors!
Thirdly what are Mercedes trying to prove here, no drifting round Ramsey hairpin? No backing it in through Black Hut or Windy corner? 70mph and 140mpg kinda look the same unless ur really on the edge of traction.
Lets hope the 3D wow factor can save this video in some way because otherwise its pretty lame..
What a waste of time.
Circuit is fine -- but really, who really thinks this car is 'all that'? For the money -- there are (IMHO) much better looking / performing cars.
I'm not a huge Dodge Viper fan - but that's pretty much what Mercedes copied to make this vehicle: In fact, many of the initial spy-shots were Viper 'mules'. Add gull-wing doors - are you're about there.
To me - this car could have been so much more....
I've driven that route in a Skyline. It's so narrow, especially over the little stone bridges, that the car never felt faster.
Mind you, at the bottom of the mountain I'd boiled the brake fluid, melted the pads (which flowed out of the back of the calipers) and cracked all four discs.
Yes, the AMG 6.3 does destroy, especially in an SLS. I, however, would like that sound to come out of the electric version of the SLS. But it's hard deciding what would be louder, the engine sound or the color... I'll take both.

Fun story: they used Volkswagens to film it.
Great advertisement for Mercedes' SUVs.
please don't disappoint me mercedes-benz makers
