We'd already heard that Samsung's 7-inch Android-based tablet (apparently known as the
Galaxy Tab) would be rolling out sometime in the
third quarter of this year, and it looks like we now also know when it'll be making its official debut. According to South Korea's JoongAng Daily, an unnamed "high-ranking official" at Samsung has confirmed that the device will be officially unveiled at IFA, which kicks off September 3rd in Berlin. No more new details beyond that, unfortunately, but
previous reports have suggested that the device will match its smartphone counterpart with an AMOLED display, and boast some decent specs across the board, including Android 2.2, a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 processor, 16GB of on-board memory, and both WiFi and 3G connectivity.
7-inch AMOLED? Alright, I'm interested for that at least.
@xmonkey
But no TouchWiz please
Nice!! I can tether this baby to my Desire on AT&T
@Vince730 That'll prolly be present considering the fact that the Galaxy S series phones have the touchwiz. They should have an option to not have it though. That'd be great.
@Vince730
I'm pretty sure that installing LauncherPro will make this thing run like melted butter...
@xmonkey
Wish it was 8 or 9 though. Also why does it look so long :s and will it get gingerbread???
@xmonkey AMOLED? I thought there was shortage, or is Samsung hogging all the supplies to themselves?
I'm interested as long as this is RGB and not Pentile.
@xmonkey
This is a pure win if the price is right!
Let's hope that it is.
@iPhone 4
Shortage of 3.7inch Amoled.
Samsung decided to take over the Galaxy..
(see what I did there ??) ^^
@xmonkey : its gonna be expensive, but I am sold.
@statickeith
I would assume so, but one can always hope. An easy option to turn it on/off would be great though. There's always hope for Gingerbread to bring that.
@Apple Google Microsoft 2 more sizes to come, 1 being ~10 inches. Not sure on the other.
@juanvaldez
That's what she said.
@xmonkey
AMOLED screen, so you can watch this tablet suck better.
@HighestRanked1 Yeah, it's unfair that Samsung has this superior display technology, and refuse to share it with your dear Mr. Jobs, isn't it? Enjoy your battery munching, pale LCD screen... ^^
@iPhone 4 AMOLED? I thought there was shortage, or is Samsung hogging all the supplies to themselves?
Of course they are.. why in the hell would you manufacture something and give it to your competitors before using it in your own products? I wish there were more AMOLED screens available for other products, but I'm not going to slam Samsung for putting it in their own products first.
Froyo is gonna kick iPad's *ss.
And why does it say AMOLED display? I thought this was supposed to have a Super AMOLED display (if im not mistaken)
@statickeith It's probably just amoled. I'm not sure Samsung would be able to create a samoled screen that large with its current tech
@webosandroid :(
But AMOLED is still great with a 7 inch display. Movies and pics would be just perfect..........
@statickeith Gotta disagree, I'm an Android fanboi (since 1.5 on the G1, current Froyo Bugless Beast on rooted Droid), but 2.2 Froyo is most definitely not suited for full time tablet use.
On anything but a smart phone, it's just going to look and feel like a huge smartphone. Gingerbread promises to fix all this of course, so here's hoping to a quick 3.0 upgrade after the Galaxy Tab launches!
@WUSS hopefully. But may be Froyo would be changed a little (if not significantly) to give a better Tablet experience. But yeah, let's see whats in store for us. 3.0 should be amazing
@WUSS
I strongly disagree given that one can make FROYO/Android 2.2 look/feel like anything they want via the installation of any number of home replacement apps.
Note: My absolute favorite being Launcher Pro Plus.
Having a mobile OS definitely hasn't hurt 'certain competing' slates/tablets (that use the same/inflexible GUI as its much smaller sibling) thus far, and as long as the Android app community starts developing apps that take advantage of the additional screen size (though same resolution), this will prove highly desirable to those with a preference for Google Android.
It All Remains To Be Seen...
@WUSS
I intuit that you're right, but I suppose I have to take a wait and see.
Here's hoping that Android3 brings with it GPU accelerated scrolling as this is why apps like LauncherPro are so smooth and iOS is so smooth (incl. browser scrolling). My fear is that on a higher res screen, scrolling web pages and the like will be very choppy with Android2 even with an fast cortex A8.
I'm genuinely curious to see what android has up its UI sleeves for v3. In a few short months, Microsoft is going to hit the scene with TONS of vendor support on equally amazing hardware. I'm guessing that the phones will cost around the same on contract, and so the UX will be the point of comparison. MS looks to be bringing its A game and will rally tons of developer support out of the gate, so google shouldn't become complacent!
Anyway, if the price is right for this tablet, and it can be used like a phone (albeit with a bluetooth headset), then I will choose to buy this over a smartphone. It looks really good!
@WUSS perhaps thats why it has an icon for a phone, this thing is nothing more than a giant galaxy s. They havent even tried to rework the ui (like dell did because they know that nobody wants to drag their finger across a 7 inch screen to see notifications). I bet it even sporting wvga, since , I thought 3. 0 Is supposed to bring higher resolutions, for tablets.
Please no TouchWiz, please no TouchWiz...
*Fingers crossed*
@afrovballpride TouchWiz 3.0 is fine, it works well, it's attractive and isn't very deeply integrated the way HTC Sense. Though I do still smirk a bit saying it out loud.
@afrovballpride touhwiz is not that bad. I use it and so far i am happy.
If this things got samoled, two cameras, sim slot, a usb host controller and sd card slot i am all in.
Am i asking for too much?
How about you release the epic before you start launching tablets Samsung. LOL
@webosandroid Yeah, that one guy that does all the product development for the thousands of different devices Samsung make needs to get his priorities in order. The other 275,999 must just sit around doing nothing while this guy makes tablets instead of smartphones. Wasters.
The device on the right in the pic is suppose to be a tablet right? If so, why does it have a 'phone' button?
@ryanbballer54 good analysis! If the tablet can make calls, then IM FREAKIN' SOLD!
@ryanbballer54 Who wouldn't want to a phone that's the size of your head. Sheesh, what a silly question.
@ryanbballer54 Google only provides its proprietary apps and apps market to phones. So everything Android *with google* must be a phone?
@ticker47 Wow, I killed that...
what a*
@ryanbballer54 its suppose to have video calling. So idk, that may be why.
@ticker47
Not if you use a bluetooth headset and carry a bag. Then the tablet is actually quite convenient as a portable internet device, and a smartphone.
I'm also 100% sold if this thing can make calls.
@MagnetMan
I'm sold if this has a front facing camera and do video calls (using Skype or anything). Great for calling family from your couch without need for starting up a laptop.
16GB does not seem like a lot of memory. Everything else sounds good though.
@Edobe it MIGHT have a MicroSD slot. I+And if it doesn, that'll make this tablet even more awesome.
@Edobe
... as long as it also has some kind of (industry standard) memory expansion slot (SDXC preferred), All's Forgiven.
@Edobe The galaxy S phones have 16gb and a micro sd slot for an additional 32gb. It would be foolish to think the tablet wouldn't have the same.
I want so bad.
I hope the battery life is good
Sounds stellar. Finally, a good Android tablet.
@Frogboy
Make one for AT&T, style it like the Captivate
I'll have a Captivate big brother, Samsung Captivate Tab. Yum
@Drybones5
Samsung cap-TAB-ate?
it looks pretty awesome
I'm cautiously optimistic about this thing. I think 7" is too small, and it's kinda ugly, but if it's got the Hummingbird processor it should be a strong performer which is my primary concern.
@Xander Crews Samsung said they'd release 3 tablets. People are saying 7", 8", and 10" tablets. Which would be awesome.
Now I'm stuck choosing between this or Motorola's Tablet.
