Enso's Android-based zenPad 4 ships, gets unboxed and politely berated on video
Based on our experience with the original zenPad -- one that we wouldn't wish upon our worst enemy's enemies -- we had a feeling that Enso's latest crop of wares wouldn't exactly be teeming with high quality components. One kindhearted tipster of ours managed to ignore our advice and order up a $199 zenPad 4, which is just another iPad KIRF for all intents and purposes. Loaded with Android 2.1 and doused in mediocrity, this 10.2-inch tablet actually ships in a knockoff iPad box... one that proudly sports a perfectly random Internet Explorer icon on the front. Trust us, the laughs don't end there. It was also said to be about half as responsive to key presses as the iPad, and when pressing down on the bezel, it actually leaves momentary indentations that require a tick to flatten back out. Classy. Head on past the break for a purely comedic video unboxing and preview -- if you've had a rough one, you owe it to yourself.

I think the search bar needs to be longer. /s
@peestandingup
Tell me about it, jeez!! I'm sure launcher pro will fix this thing right up because 4 columns on such a big screen is fail. But..... if it doesn't have access to the Android Market, they blew it...
@Plazmic Flame Blame Google not the manufacturer. Due to licensing restrictions devices have to conform to strict guidelines in order to access and download apps from the Market. Every Android tablet has this issue (as far as I know).
@peestandingup did anyone else notice that the E on the side of the box looks just like the E from internet explorer?
@Plazmic Flame
That would mean all of the android tablets blew it, which is for the most part true. Here's hoping that the galaxy tab will actually be the one that will change it all.
@peestandingup
Now, we need someone to review the ZenDROID!!!
*looks at Engadget*
@peestandingup iPhone killer??
@peestandingup ya, just a few more pixels and it would have been the dopeness...ha ha. My android phone puts this thing to shame. I almost feel bad for the company.
I do wish that the reviewer realized that it was booting Skyfire because Android 2.1 doesn't support flash but Skyfire does.
@barkerja ZOMG ANDROID IZ SO OPEN
@tekdemon Thanks tekdemon, I had not realized it (in fact that was my first minute operating the Android OS, seemed quite intuitive so kudos to the Google.
@ChronoSapien
either u dont read the articles and post random things or ur being sarcastic
i hope its the sarcastic one if not read the article (unless u ment to tell other ppl that dont read the article that theres an e on it in that case then yea but if not well idk lol)
not to be mean just saying
@peestandingup
Lol at IE logo on the side.
@MANTISxB
I laughed so hard at that big IE logo. Those bastards!
Android is just not optimized for these devices yet. I couldn't imagine using this tablet for more than 5 minutes without pulling my hair out. Just seeing the stuttering when scrolling on sites like YouTube reminds me of the days of dial-up. Definitely needed patients.
After all those kirf, when are we finally going to see a "real" android tablet being available for the public (instead of all those announcements and photos and what not). I'm almost tempted to buy an ipad after seeing all those bad knockoffs.
@Dadu Samsung Tab is supposed to be coming out shortly, as is the RIM BlackPad (both running Android). Now you'll see some really nice legitimate contenders.
@Dadu At IFA Samsung will show their Android-Tablet, so next month.
@Frasier if it has Touchwiz it will be an automatic fail
@Shelbz you obviously have not used Touchwiz, it actually adds USEFUL things to android:
- Notification panel has quick access switches for Wifi, BT, Vibration and GPS (silent on US SGS)
- Swipe right to call contact and swipe left to message
The actual interface that many dislike can be EASILY changed with ADW or LauncherPro
@kstagg Samsung Tab is supposed to be coming out shortly, as is the RIM BlackPad (both running Android). Now you'll see some really nice legitimate contenders.
Blackpad will not run android as it will run blackberry OS 6
@Shelbz
Touchwiz on the Galaxy S is actually not bad imo. I didn't think I was going to like it but I kinda do. I have an N1 as well, and I honestly don't think that Touchwiz is a downgrade although I still sort of prefer stock.
@fatjoe3 No, the "lag" is NOT from the phone; if it were, his FINGER would "lag", too. No, the "lag" (the delay you see between his finger and the screen responding to the user input) is because it's a cheap POS device.
Also, how should he use the resistive screen? Your comment sounds surprisingly similar to "he's holding it wrong."
Dude. Why?
looks cheap, it is cheap
@leo221
piece of crap. wouldn't pay 30 bucks for it. what a waste for a good OS
Your worst enemy's enemies are your friends...
@kapanak
You beat me to it!
That IE icon means we're cool, right? Right?
Haha, the box even looks like an iPad box.
@andrewcweaver Would you guys agree that these cheap knockoffs their potential market are for people that really want an iPad but can't afford one or justify the price. I have an old HP laptop and a Macbook pro, but I find myself carrying and using the iPad more. Apple really hit that sweet spot between a smart-phone and a laptop which was supposed to be the netbook. I always thought people bough netbooks not because they wanted a smaller laptop but because they were cheaper. (most cases)
@fatjoe3 Hey Joe if you think this reviewer was so "arrogant" and biased simply because he used an iPhone4 to record the video, why don't you put your money where your mouth is, go buy one of these things yourself, and do your own review.
I especially loved you saying the screen responds to pressure, when the guy actually pressed his fingers down into the screen, deforming it, trying to get it to respond.
But I'm sure it's a really good tablet. Just needs an Android fan to review it properly.
YAY. USB port
@koolerz1569 probably gonna get flamed for this, but you can buy a dongle for when you need a usb port on an ipad. It's part of the camera kit and does work with devices other than cameras.
Bye guys, as I get downranked to oblivion.
@ttringle yeah. i think everyone knows that you can buy a usb dongle for the iPad, but i don't think it can be used as an external storage.
@koolerz1569 If you want external storage, wouldn't you rather have SD card than USB so you don't have more crap hanging off it? Actually, people have used the SD card dongle as external movie storage through iPhoto.
Curious if anyone actually felt that their iPad didn't hold enough.
Classy? I'll drink to that. Personally, with all these crappy tablets coming out, I'd have thought there would be at least one good one. With most of them, the major problem is the screen. Charge an extra $50 and give it a capacitive screen and they would actually sell some.
@j2daake
This is the comment I was looking for, definitely needs a capacitive screen. Resistive is just a no go in this day in age, even if you're trying to make it affordable. $250 would have still been a better price.
@j2daake That's my one issue with the E7001 I have. Add a capacitive screen and it would be damn near perfect. 7" is all I want in a tablet, 10 is too much.
@j2daake
Android on the tablet as a browsing experience doesn't seem that terrible. The problem is mostly the crappy screen and partly the heap build quality overall... orientation sensor not working etc.
Why Apple is the only one with a decent tablet right now is beyond me.
@bebop
>Why Apple is the only one with a decent tablet right now is beyond me.
Yes, it probably is well beyond your understanding. Dreams do not usually translate to reality. It takes hard work and PLENTY of money. A couple of things that most companies don't seem to do or have. There is an industry-wide shortage of key tablet components and only the cash-endowed companies can afford to take the risk to mass produce tablets.
@Shelbz "7" is all I want...10 is too much"
That's an old lie made up by white women.
You can't softball 'em in there like that. You know I'm gonna dog it.
There are two tablets on the market.. one is called iPad and the other is called JokePad. :) :)
@Zodiac
or... iPad wifi, iPad with 3G.
@Zodiac
you forgot the JooJoo :p
I might have to visit china and give them a talk'n to.
@Justin Bieber 3 Better watch out. They might bust you in the head with a water bottle.
@Justin Bieber 3
Actually there are better ones, alot of...
its just that engadget love showing the crappy ones.
or maybe they just don't know whats out there...
Since these Chinese companies ain't sponsoring them anyway...
won't hurt making fun of them...
Too thick
@Brt312 Thats what she said
Seems that the screen is resistive, that might be why swiping his finger across does nothing, but i have seen more sensitive riesistive screens before
