Is this Canon's 60D DSLR, articulating display and all?
If you'll recall, we first heard a notion that Canon was considering a 60D and 550D with articulating displays way back in January; PMA came and went, and no such camera emerged. But now we're back in familiar territory, and this go 'round we've got IFA and Photokina happening next month in Germany. The image above is bruited to be the 60D we've all been waiting for, and while it's usually easy to brush these off as possible fan renders (or worse, Photoshops), that display hinge looks mighty legitimate. Nikon hasn't seen fit to take the articulating LCD on its entry-level D5000 to any higher-end units just yet, but if Canon goes ahead with this one... well, we all know how competition works, now don't we?

Nikons articulating dispay is worthless. im so pist i bought the D5000. what good is a screen that folds out the bottom. you can't even mount the damn thing
@jvm156gmailcom
Exactly, this is a logical position to put the hinge. And the Nikon's display resolution isn't too great.
@Barron How is this logical? You have to flip it all the way out and around to really do anything with it.
PS. I can't say that I am a fan of either hinge.
@jvm156gmailcom I have a D5000 and have no issues using the articulating screen when it is attached to my tripod. I'm not saying that others shouldn't have issues with their tripods, but I lucked out in that mine has no issue and I can flip the screen out. That being said, I do believe that the articulating screen on the D5000 could have been designed better. But really, you should've known what you were getting into with the D5000's screen before you bought it. Just my 2 cents...
My iPhone has a 5MP camera? is that like almost like this? Lots of PIXELS!
**Flame Shied Equipped{ + 100 Defense}**
@rmbrown09 It's excactly the same. Truth to be told, if you own an iPhone, you don't need any other camera. The iPhone is just that good.
Now I know what you're all thinking, "Oh no, but I just bought a new camera, but I own an iPhone!" It's cool, it's alright, there's a solution!
All you have to do, is to send your brand new cameras to me, and they will be distributed to the less fortunate non-iPhone-owning-masses!
@Sarig
I have both a iPhone 4 and Canon T2i ( 550D ) and the canon has a purpose that iPhone 4 or other phones with nice camera inside can do. For one thing these cameras have exchangable lens which alow more options.
But having a nice camera and especially video like in my iPhone 4, does have advanatage of not having to carry arround one of point and shoot cameras.
@Sarig
Ha ha. Funny. But yeah, the iPhone camera isn't bad, the image quality is as good as or better than a cheap point and shoot.
dSLR is a different story though.
@rmbrown09 The 5Mp on your iPhone is not the same as an equivalent megapixel DSLR. Image quality is like dirt mound compared to the Pyramids of Egypt. The camera on the iPhone is very useful but not enough to start thinking you'd never need a DSLR if you want those great pictures you want to crop down or simply for image quality.
No video switch like the 7D?
@Parker731
Yes there is:
http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/709824_m.jpg
@soconnell74 thats not the same switch as the 7d
Well, would it take video? Articulating displays are staples of video cameras and come very much in handy for when you have to hold them above or below your head. I'm not saying it wouldn't be welcome in a DSLR, but it has been notably absent in the ones that do take video.
@thumbtack
This camera is supposedly centered around the video. So not only does it take video, it should be better than the 7d for video because of the display & things like live auto focus
@thumbtack There is one more picture in the source and I think it shows a LiveView/Rec Button and other buttons like: Menu, Info, Play etc.

@esaheki Still looks like there are buttons missing... and where is the little directional selector nubbin? I use that all the time.
@TMoney2007
"where is the little directional selector nubbin? I use that all the time."
Touch screen?
@thumbtack
With the cameras above and below this slot already doing video, I really can't imagine they'd fill in the 50D's shoes with something that didn't.
They don't update these cameras too often, so it would be silly if we were all the way into 2013 before prosumers got their video on.

@savekeacom Boo... I use that thing to select focus points without having to take the camera away from my eye and not having to scroll through points with the wheel.
Me wants!
Canon must be running out of names:
2002 = D60
2010 = 60D
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneosd60/page2.asp
@Michael Scrip
It's just the logical continuation from its predecessor, the 50D.
@einhanderkiller
Right... the "running out of names" was a joke.
The mere fact that I knew the existence of the old D60, and I could produce a link to DPReview to show it means I know a little about cameras... and how they are named. :)
But the point still remains... Canon's "somethingD" and Nikon's "Dsomething" aren't very creative names.
@Michael Scrip
Both canon & Nikon need to work on their naming procedures.
@dswatson83
Agreed. But neither of them want to give up the name recognition of their lines, so its hard to imagine them changing, even though it is quite silly.
@dswatson83
I agree. I much prefer names that are more creative. I personally scratched out T2i and replaced it with 'Helga'. Manly but with a feminine side.
looks convincing~~
seems body design more futurism ~~~
Honestly, I'd rather have a larger and higher resolution screen than one that folds out. Sure, it can be useful, but if my goal was MySpace angles then I wouldn't be shelling out this much money for a camera.
@AyeBeAPirate Really? Guess they should add a Facebook logo to it then...
All jokes aside, it serves WAY more of a purpose shooting fliks for FB.. I'll be on the move while you shoot from a tripod. Have fun!
@AyeBeAPirate
There are plenty of other models that don't have the articulated display, you know, so it's not like you lack choice. Also, Canon hasn't had any articulated displays in it's DSLRs, so it's about time (I've had the S series P&S zooms with articulated LCDs since they first came out). There have been times when I've felt that I would have benefited from these things, such as when taking pics over people's heads, taking very close to the ground pics, or things like that, where the viewfinder or normal LCD don't work well, if at all. And like some people mentioned, many prefer this type of display for video capture (I prefer an EVF/OVF, but that's not possible). If the resolution isn't horrible, it would be good enough, since the LCDs on DSLRs aren't really that suited for intense scrutiny anyways.
@StarcasM That's what my point and shoot is for! I'm not going to lug around a heavy DSLR for glamor shots.
Of course, it depends on the person. I'm not that much of a photographer, but I rarely use the live view mode. If someone else really does use it, or is in situations where shooting over their head is very useful (?), then this would be a great feature.
Not like I have the money for it, anyway. I've just got the T1i.
@AyeBeAPirate I do a lot of landscape and close-ups, and having an articulate display with good live-view is a requirement for my next purchase, as I'm quite tired of having to lie down on the ground myself :p
this isn't a P&S, get the articulating out
@spyder
This isn't a P&S, get the auto modes out.
This isn't a P&S, get the movie modes out.
This isn't a P&S, get the LCD out.
This isn't a P&S, get the cheap prices out.
Nobody's forcing you to use these features. If you don't like them, don't use them, or buy a different camera. It's not as if the feature would get in your way or hamper/cramp your photography. Or is it that people are afraid that it would make them look less "pro" if it had some usability features of the common P&S? Just like when "movie" mode was introduced, so many people wailed and moaned that you'd think it was the end of the world.
@solmar think about it.. a pro camera.. with a moveable piece I am sure will have a tendency to break.
@spyder It's a pro camera, not a point and shoot - you're supposed to be able to handle it like a pro, not drop it every where you go and clumsily catch it on something as you get it in and out of your pocket, like you would with a point and shoot! :-D
There is one more picture in the source and I think it shows a LiveView/Rec Button and other buttons like: Menu, Info, Play etc.

It does have a video button. I increased the brightness of the second picture which clearly shows how many buttons this thing have

All those people who complain about anything new (oh no it has liveview, oh no it takes videos, oh no articulating screen) are reminding me the people who complained about autofocus.
Within a year or two all or most DSLRs will look like video cameras I tell you so get used to it.
About Time Canon... Good Show!
The articulating screen is cool, isnt the 60 D going to be the new full frame (35mm sensor)?
@ryn456 That series of camera has been APS-C so I very much doubt that chance.
@datafox oh, well i feel quite dumb now. I can never understand camera naming. Theres like 5 diffrent nubmer series just with in the canon line up.
@ryn456
It's pretty simple for the DSLRs. The more numbers before the "D", the more consumer-ish the camera is. 3 digits is a Rebel, 2 digits is a prosumer, 1 digit is professional.
The bit where it gets confusing is that when there are 2 or 3 digits, the higher the number the better (ie, 550D is better than 500D, 50D is better than 40D), but when there is a single digit, the lower the better (ie. 5D Mk2 is better than 7D, 1D Mk4 is better than 5D Mk2, if there was a 3D it would fit between the 1 and 5).
@Jason Litka
Oh, and the 4-digits camera, the 1000D (Rebel XS) is a stripped down version of the 3-digit. There's only been one of these, but considering the price point they come in at, I'd either expect more, or them to be replaced by an EVIL design.
@Jason Litka now see all that kind of proves my point, it took 2-3 paragraphs to explain. But it gets more interesting when you look at the t2i which i own. Its sensor is larger then aps-h but its not full frame. From there on the lines get quite blury and then every thing is clear agian when you look at the top-o- the line stuff.
@ryn456
If I'm not mistaken, the T2i is the 550D, right?
The sensor is slightly larger than APS-C, but it's still a 1.6x crop. APS-H is the size of sensor in a 1D.
http://bit.ly/af3TD6 That looks like a really big body for a xxD series !! .. i sure hope it aint a xD series camera after literally just forking out £1200 on a 7D last week. i will be double gutted because the picture quality is pretty poor on the 7d .. images are too soft and ISO noise is quite bad for a xD series camera... and no i don't have the bundled lens , instead i went for a 24-70 f2.8 L
@o0timbo0o You think the image quality is bad from a Canon 7D?
Just go buy a Hassy already, clearly nothing else will do.
@o0timbo0o Have you not thought of sending it back!? My old 20D with an L lens doesn't produce soft images.
I've yet to see a review from a decent source that thinks the IQ of a 7D is anything but top drawer.
