Carmack blows minds with id Software's Rage, running on iPhone at 60fps with 'megatextured' graphics (video)
We're sorry, but the Palm Pixi's rendition of Need for Speed no longer impresses us -- we've just seen John Carmack show off Rage for iPhone. While of course it looks nothing like the PC graphical monstrosity that swept the E3 Games Critics Awards, it's safe to say the 60 frame-per-second tech demo at QuakeCon 2010 shoves the cell phone gaming envelope through a Juggernaut-class brick wall. Where Carmack originally called the iPhone "more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined," the id Software co-founder is now aiming squarely at the likes of PS2 and Xbox with iPhone 4 hardware. Not impressive enough? He says it still "runs great on an original 2G iPhone" as well. VG247, who liveblogged the event, reports the title will be available in the App Store later this year for a relatively inexpensive price, with a second game available in time for the PC game's 2011 launch. Sadly, there's as of yet no plans for Android owners to get the same megatexturing goodness. Don't miss the video after the break, because this screenshot doesn't do it justice.

Dude, thats actually really impressive!
They do look nice, but I would like to see what this looks like on an OMAP processor or Hummingbird.
@statickeith
I know! I was like dude wtf thats a phone?!
@statickeith
That was pretty insane, iPhone gaming... level 2.
@statickeith The guy who was presenting this seems like a piece of work. Although he did a great and innovative thing, he was bragging and talking about how great he is the whole time as well. His presentation should have been a bit more humble.
@NuklearPanda Yeah, I don't see ANY games on Android that come close to iPhone games.
@NuklearPanda I think you pretty much just did the A4 is the same architecture as the OMAP and Hummingbird so I may be wrong, but they should work just the same. Actually it is rumored that the iPhone downclocks the 1Ghz processor (like they have with every iPhone for battery life) so it might just run a little better. I don't know how that works maybe someone could explain a little better as I am sure the GPU need to be taken into consideration and idk what kind the iPhone has, but the new Samsung Galaxy S phones have the newest one.
@angermeans
Iphone 4 has a 45nm custom A8 processor much like OMAP or Hummingbird but it uses a Power VR SGX 535 IIRC as opposed to the 540 on the hummingbird.
@statickeith If iphone is so powerful, why have I never seen a game on it that looks better than PSP launch titles?
@Frawley
you have no idea who John Carmack is do you? If you knew, you wouldn't have written what you did above. Go wiki him and you will know.
@Frawley "The guy who presented this" is John Carmack. I believe after the career he's had in the video game industry he's earned the right to be a bit proud of his work. Perhaps you have never heard of John Carmack, or id Software, in which case you should probably Google him or his company ... oh, and maybe crawl out from under the rock you have apparently been living under.
@NuklearPanda It would run with a faster FPS which you would not notice, impressive eh ?
@Frawley
The guy talking is called John Carmack... Founder of id Software! He is allowed to brag and he sure do have the right to tell how great he is... Thats my opinion anyway
You should go look him up...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_carmack
@NuklearPanda Its not just about the processor, this depends more on the GPU than on the CPU. And the only other phones besides iPhone 4 with a capable GPU are Samsung Galaxy S series and Nokia N8. So I'd like to see what they would be capable of.
@Ken CleanAir System
Damn you beat me to it ;) Who doesn't know John Carmack anyway
@Ken CleanAir System Typical that you would assume I live under a rock because I don't know about a celebrity in the video game development scene...
@Oskin I have a bit more respect for him after looking at his wikipedia article, but I still don't take back what I said originally. I don't care if it was Oprah who made that video, being important doesn't mean you should brag and tell everyone how awesome you are.
@Extinction Because portable gaming systems have significantly better GPU's and devs used to working on graphical apps/games. Its not just dependent on RAM and CPU
@Frawley I probably shouldn't bother responding to this but you must be young and not know who John Carmack is. He has every right to be the cocky son of a b*tch that he is. John Carmack is one of the founding fathers for the entire first person shooter genre. If it wasn't for him(and the rest of the talent at id Software) most of the FPS games that come out today would not be around or even be any where near the quality with level of detail that they have.
@Frawley
When Karmack talks, nVidia, aTI, Microsoft, Apple, Kronos, etc listens. Think on that.
@Frawley
He created and invented the first person shooter genre.
That's not an exaggeration, I'm not a fanboy. You're making yourself look like a tool.
@Frawley
John Carmack>Oprah
@statickeith After playing with the new gyroscope I knew these fps phone games had hope, but after seeing that I can't wait!
@Extinction Because you never bothered to look?
This is the quality upcoming iTV apps need for it to be successful.
@ArtVandeley
Actually, in money, power and fame: Oprah >>>>>>>>>> carmack
@Oskin When was the last time ID did a game that was actually fun to play? Doom 1? Quake 1?
@Extinction Madden for iPad...check it out. (i know its iPad, but still uses same chip and DAMN!
@Schmitty338
But it terms of Asskicking Awesomeness
Carmack >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Oprah
Even Chuck Norris gives Carmack a head nod when he walks into a room. Can't say the same about Oprah.
@Guimo John Carmack is kind of the Pope of gaming and 3d engine design. Sure there are others, but no one person commands so much power.
@Frawley lol considering that he's probably the best 3D game engine programmer of all time I'd say that he can be at least a little bit proud of his abilities. Anything he cranks out is pretty much going to be the opposite of CryEngine-i.e. it's going to be heavily optimized to run as fast as possible.
@statickeith
Its a shame it costs to much to develop a game like this for a phone because developers will simply not see a return on the investment. I can't see somebody shelling out the cost of a PSP game for an app especially when games feel downright wrong without any tactile feedback.
@statickeith iphone 4 is shit so dont be impresed, carmack is a dumbfuck i cant believe all of you are falling for this. open source is the only thing that matters
@HansImGlueck I have, a lot. Don't make excuses.
@angermeans the galaxy s and the iphone 4 have the same processor just different names. Samsung the division that makes chips made both. You know how there are two samsungs one that makes phones and one that makes phone chips.
@Frawley
Why not?
He probably did more than anyone to invent first person shooters one of the most popular genres of gaming, he also pushed hardware to the limit, got hardware makers to keep up and made many of the innovations we take for granted now.
@Extinction
Because no one wants to make a super awesome game for the iPhone. Apple might kick you out of the app store and all your hard work might disappear. LOL j/k ...kinda.
@Guimo
To add to your point, ATI and NVidia will and have made changes to their graphics drivers in response to Carmack's comments and feedback.
@alphaswift
Man... nVidia and ATI have modelled their graphics hardware in order to be able to improve the speed on the software implementions by Carmack. Normal bump mapping was implemented for QuakeII while ATI and nVidia were still fighting on supporting larger textures. Programmable vertex shaders were there first on QuakeIII while ATI and nVidia were still fighting over a faster fixed transform pipeline.
I would be proud to go and learn from the master.
@Frawley
I don't even like first person shooters and I know who he is.
@Frawley
Thats like telling Michael Jordan he has no right to brag about his basketball skills. Carmack is basically a living legend as far as game technology goes
Carmack knows a lot about graphics, but he hasn't put out a truly good game since Quake II (at least not on PC). Sorry, but its the truth. Maybe he can redeem himself with id's newest one-word wonder.
@statickeith
My computer can't even run things that look that good!
@Shalabi its pretty much the same iphone gaming and android.... android has more potential because of the constant hardware update and xda overclocking the fuck out of the phones.... like the vibrant being overclocked to 1.6 ghz stable.... iphone users have to wait till summer of next year for a faster iphone and it still we be out dated but gaming is pretty much the same
@psycros I am pretty sure Carmack has never been one to personally brag about game design. He makes 3d game engines... damn good ones too :)
@statickeith
This makes me a little more comfortable with mobile computing being the mainstream future.
Bravo to Carmack.
@Frawley
I agree. Self respect is cool, but just bragging about yourself is silly, no matter how famous you are. It makes him look like a 10 year old clown.
@statickeith I'm a extreme John Carmack fan. I'm buying a iphone 4 just for this. Nobody can stop me!
@statickeith
Is this really dynamic lighting ?
I have no sound so I don't here the comments, but I don't see any evidence of that.
Anyway, to me it looks more like really really beautifully designed textures than like technical breakthrough.
I'm not hard to please, but honestly I'm not very impressed.
@Shalabi yep, there was an article about SE gaming oriented prototype,that will run ps1 quality games.
day later-iphone running rage. not a prototype,just an iphone.
Android for gaming?oh you...
