Carmack blows minds with id Software's Rage, running on iPhone at 60fps with 'megatextured' graphics (video)
We're sorry, but the Palm Pixi's rendition of Need for Speed no longer impresses us -- we've just seen John Carmack show off Rage for iPhone. While of course it looks nothing like the PC graphical monstrosity that swept the E3 Games Critics Awards, it's safe to say the 60 frame-per-second tech demo at QuakeCon 2010 shoves the cell phone gaming envelope through a Juggernaut-class brick wall. Where Carmack originally called the iPhone "more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined," the id Software co-founder is now aiming squarely at the likes of PS2 and Xbox with iPhone 4 hardware. Not impressive enough? He says it still "runs great on an original 2G iPhone" as well. VG247, who liveblogged the event, reports the title will be available in the App Store later this year for a relatively inexpensive price, with a second game available in time for the PC game's 2011 launch. Sadly, there's as of yet no plans for Android owners to get the same megatexturing goodness. Don't miss the video after the break, because this screenshot doesn't do it justice.

lol andriod gaming
gl guys...
@sighclops
It's not a big deal, not like we're going to buy iphones to play a game from a company that's been tired since quake2.
*android
spell fail
there's but one problem.
this is only possible only when john carmack's involved....
iPhone still rocks
@chastiser
It really does! It's a great smartphone.
I think I prefer the flexibility of Android and Galaxy S, as I like to customize and freedom to choose, but iPhone is undeniably a quality device!
Android = fail hahahhaha
Iphone 4 = god
@Apple4
Can't agree with that but one thing's for sure
You= troll
@Apple4
Tribalism is the enemy within:

still have the shitty touch screen game controls
Meh waste of time, the iphone is not a games machine, he could have choose any other platform and it would be better....just see he avoiding 3DS again and do some other game for iphone that great gaming machine....with great dpad and all that...
That does NOT look like 60fps...
lol at the all here who are 100% sure Carmack invented the FPS.
Same people who think Jobs invented the home computer and mobile phone I guess.
Carmack might be a major player, but to pretend 3D gaming wouldn't have happened without him is tripe.
Galaxy S can already do better, this is not news or anything great..
Carmack owns.
As awesome as this might seem; I really can't wait to see how smartphones handle gaming once Intel releases their x86 mobile processors. Anyone remember that clip of one running the full version of WoW WOTLK? Friggin' amazing.
This is appropriately named RAGE because that's what I'm feeling since the video isn't working.
Sorry but playing FPS games on touch devices is a hundred times worse than playing them on a console which in turn is awful.
Alright I was just wanting to mekr sure‚ but in the article (for those who just watched the video) said that this would run on even a 2nd gen iphone. Now if you accept that carmack is as much a "tetchnology wizard" then there more phones capable then you think. Take both moto droids for instance, the first of which uses a gpu almost identical to the 3gs.
So that being said, fragmentation isn't so much a deal being that phones that have been out for 2 years now can run this application. All you have to do is set minimum standards as software developers and those who can play will play. Just as there are different computers for different purposes,
@Narao whoops hit add comment accidently. Anyways, I was just going to say that Phones are developing just like computers and you'll need to make sure you get the appropriate hardware that you need or want.
@Narao
I intuit the same conclusion. Almost all modern handhelds can 'handle' this demo.
Fragmentation is a buzzword sensationalized by the media.
In fact you don't have to set minimum standards, you just need to optimize for the platform. That was the point of Virtual Textures (featured in this demo), to begin with.
I hope Sony meant "dual-core Snapdragon with dedicated graphics a.k.a. Scorpion" for their PSP phone, and not a simple 2008 Snapdragon.
So... does it run Crysis?
Unfortunately 'iPhone' means a lot of things. Segmented markets FTL.
@koehler83
iPhone means smart phone from Apple, yes there is a 3G, 3Gs and 4
Unless you want to count all the iPhone look likes out there.
...wow I totally want to waste my money on a game on a touch screen phone. It looks awesome but regardless of horse power the psp and de are better systems because you have real controls. Plus this playstation phone sounds pretty interesting this just makes me wonder what that phone will be able to do.
Very cool video, hopefully they release a developers tool kid to allow others to make games using their engine. I remember in earlier days seeing some of John's books on game programm - very cool assembly language stuff.
Can wait to see this game in real life.
pffff you should try Palm Pre with UBERKernel on 1Ghz
Well at least it'll be nice to have some ID goodness on the two devices that have all but replaced consoles in my daily use model. iphone games are nice but I really like the screen real-estate on the iPad better.
This is very impressive. John Carmack once again leads the way. Epic, and Crytek your move.....
While the demo is impressive no doubt I would hold off on the jubilation till we see how it runs with physics, AI and combat in the mix.
(not to mention that playing FPS on an iphone, or any smartphone for that matter, is like scratching your itch with a barbed wire - it may do the job, but it'll be painfully unnecessary)
I hope Galaxy S will have games with graphics like this in the future.
Galaxy S is even more powerful than iPhone 4:
Galaxy S GPU: SGX540
iPhone 4 GPU: SGX535
The CPUs are pretty much the same (?).
