Palm Pixi shows off 3D gaming chops with webOS 1.4.5 release (video)
What with all the "battery optimization" excitement, we nearly forgot that Sprint's new webOS 1.4.5 update doesn't just empower the Pre; it also finally brings PDK'd OpenGL and SDL support to the Palm Pixi. On the off chance you don't speak developer lingo, that's short for 3D apps and games, and as it turns out the pint-sized Pixi doesn't play the latter half-badly. PreCentral fired up a copy of Need For Speed: Undercover on the freshly-upgraded handset immediately above, and found the game perfectly playable with "decent" framerates and only slightly sub-par load times. Watch their spiffy Nissan turn tricks right after the break, and pray companies get cracking on some Unreal Engine 3 apps soon.

ZZZAAAOOOZZZAAA !!!!!!!!
@metanup lulz?
Wow! There will be 6 people really happy about this! /s
@Dadu your thinking of the Kin, im pretty sure the pre sold more so people could have a 30$ month wifi hotspot
@spaz4322
uhm, this is about the pixi, not the pre ;)
@Dadu
I have a Pixi. I'm very much happy with it. STFU.
@InternetPolice
Congrats on having the 35th best handset on the market!
@suicidebob
Could be worse... He could of gotten the Kin ;]
@Aklex7 Could HAVE gotten the Kin.
Pixi and 3D gaming. Lol.
What's bothering me is the naming issue now with "3D Games" and "3D Content."
I know old games used to be "2D" and new ones are "3D," but this causes confusion with the 3D tech that makes the picture even more 3D? I just confused myself.
@Teerim For me personally, until I can actually move around a 3D object having the picture jumping out of the screen really doesn't make much difference to me.
dadu what kind of phone you rock? Cuz when palm drops there new harware and software it'll make you want to switch
@supermanh
HTC Desire with official froyo, sounds like a nice challenge
@Dadu if you've ever seriously used webOS then its not a challenge at all. Pair that with modern top tier hardware and you have an awesome cell phone, or true super phone.
I love my EVO and froyo finally begins to show the future promise of Android but nothing compares to webOS...hands down best mobile operating sys.
@Dadu
Dude you really need to STFU. Read some reports... at one point the Pre was considered the best smartphone in the market bar none. Now I know the Pixi isnt on exact par with the Pre but its still an amazing little phone. Im currently on a Galaxy S but if the Pre came to T-Mobile, I would have jumped on it in a heartbeat. And WebOS 2.0 is going to be amazing. Palms only mistake was to partner up with Sprint. WebOS could have easily dominated the market with the proper form of marketing (look at the Vzn droid as a perfect example).
Congrats to all of the pixi owners out there.
Long live WebOS!
A little off topic, but wasn't Flash 10.1 suppose to come to WebOS before Android? What's the deal there
@Programmer
Yeah...but android took off. Palm was in the brink of going bye bye. 2011 will be palms year.
@Programmer I know, it seems like it's been a while since I've heard anything new about viewing flash content on my Pre; I've sort of given up hope that it'll happen before 2.0...
@Programmer
Who cares? I'd much rather Palm focuses on neat, new and overdue hardware than compatibility with third party software like Flash. Besides, Flash isn't on the vast majority of Android phones yet as most are not updated to 2.2 (and not everyone with 2.2 necessarily will download/use Flash). Look at WebOS as coming with its own Flash-blocker ;-)
@Canucker
P.S. Am not a Flash-hater but there are far more important priorities. It's probably fair to say that Adobe hasn't prioritized the WebOS version either as they've focused on working with Google to try to get the Android version decent.
@Programmer flash on a small screen is really not that great. that's at the bottom of list for me.
@krosref Flash video or flash games full screen is no different than streaming video or downloaded app games. What you say makes no sense.
Flash runs very well on my Droid and games perform nicely.
I can't wait to do this on those printers coming with webOS.
3D as 3D? Or 3D 3D?
3D as in 3D? Or 3D 3D?
@meepmeep
To 3D or not to 3D ;-)
Not the best 3D have to say...
Watch it with the Nissan putdowns, Mr. Hollister.
@Jordus After Nissan decided to make the Juke, they deserve every insult in the book.
"Watch their riced-up Nissan turn tricks right after the break"
There is no break, nor any video after said break, in this post.
:(
Please...I mean who actually owns this primitive telephone
@bhoffa
Now, come on. Calling the Pixi is simply absurd.

@aubreyq
Commenting system FAIL.
@aubreyq Plastic buttons and a garbage OS qualifies it as old garbage
@aubreyq don't tell me that you actually own one...otfl!
Not to butt in but...
The Pixi isn't garbage, not by a long shot. I wouldn't call it relevant, but WebOS is not half bad. If Palm had down a better marketing job, or it's app store did better, then it would be a top contender.
Project Gotham Racing on the Zune HD looks more 3D than this.
Even at a year old, WebOS is still the best mobile operating system on the market. If you don't agree, you haven't used it.
Who the hell owns a Pixi?
@mryark Me, and I like it WAY more than my HD2 with Froyo and Moto Milestone. WebOS is great and the phone is slim and light as hell.
