Adobe Photoshop Express: mobile manipulation mastery gets prettier UI, iPad support
You're probably well aware that we like to tinker with Photoshop from time to time, and while we're constantly building up our database of funnies, it's quite difficult to do so on the road. For times like these, there's the newly-rebranded Adobe Photoshop Express, a completely free (!) application designed for both iPhone and (new for this update) iPad. The newest version (v1.3) weighs in at 6.5MB and provides users with the same abilities to mildly edit their photos as before, via crop, color, filter and border controls. Better still, it'll let you access your entire online photo gallery at Photoshop.com, so if anyone's down to try it out and send us their best gadget-related mutations, drop a link in comments or tips. Only catch is there's still no support for layers or compositions culled from multiple images, but hey, it's free! Don't say we never encouraged you to live a little, okay?
Update: Hey, it's out for Android too! Thanks, Wes!

can i get content aware fill now?
No, the real Adobe Photoshop Extended app will support it though, and only cost $999.
@untrueparadox That would be awsome! Take a picture with your best friend and two smoking hot ladies and then just replace him with... background!
@Edmunn
You missed the perio... oh wait. it really does cost nearly a thousand dollars :(
@d3sc3nd3ncy For what it does, it's a bargain!
Before people come on saying that the iPad doesn't have a camera (yet), I would direct them to this http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A
@d0mth0ma5
That doesn't really change the fact that the iPad doesn't have a camera...
@DgDeBx I was merely making the point that this App is still very relevant for the iPad. With regards to the camera issue, the iPad would be rather unwieldy as a traditional camera, I can only really see a need for one for use with FaceTime.
@d0mth0ma5 ...how cute...a camera connection kit. Life changing shit.
@Taller Attempting to patronise... how adorable...
@d0mth0ma5 Yay, Apple is will to take more of my money so I can have a locked down usb port! How thoughtful of them.
@Taller
You're just the stereotypical Apple hater, you're a dime a dozen.
@Mikeserena Makes you sound like an apple fanboy. Considering the huge supply of apple fanboys and the low demand for them, I'd say that you'd be lucky at a dime a dozen :p
anyways, i'm sad that adobe (who are still on unfriendly ground with apple) would bother making this product iOs only, rather than release it across a few platforms. They're just playing into apple's hands with this free app.
@isays it is also available on android and has been for some time (under the mobile photoshop name until the latest update. Much as I don't like apple's policies I'm glad adobe has risen above petty behaviour and allow iOs users to use this too - don't punish the users for a companies' policies.
Engadget you may want to update the article to point out it is also free on android as a lot of people will comment on it.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
Only severe ignorants and iHaters think like you.
I installed this app on my iPhone and works fine. Not so much for my iPad. There appears to be a conflict with a number of different apps on the iPad, such as print central and good reader...among others. When I open up PS on my iPad, print central immediately opens and PS closes. Adobe is aware of the conflict as others have reported the problem.
@dhamson Yeah, I noticed this myself. Too bad. Uninstalled.
@Liquidmark
Starting in portrait helps, just as the description says...
Now full-blown Lightroom please
@OlliX Nope! Still won't open no matter what orientation.
@dhamson
Strange, it works for me :-/
Anyway it's a pretty cool tool.
It's available on Android too Engadget...and it if genius . Would be nice if you mentioned it too :-) runs like lightning on the desire
@benjih still not better than PicSay Pro though.
@EliteMonsterHunter i just tried both... i would say that photoshop has better saturation and contrasting tools, while picsay is way more well-rounded as a single photo editor
@benjih
You beat me to it, article proves engadget is a little biased. Dont get me wrong, used to have an iphone and may buy an ipad, but leave it to readers to give ALL the news.....
@EliteMonsterHunter
Definitely agree. I like Photoshop on the desktop, but PicSay Pro has about 100 more options than Photoshop Express.
Sidenote: in Android, PicSay keeps your high resolution when cropping, no downsampling!
@d0mth0ma5
External camera lmao
Btw the next ipad will have it as an upgrade lol
@applehateboy Well of course it will, this is how Apple does things (and razor companies for that matter). Incremental updates = More money
I've been using this app for a long time now.
The white icon is ugly. I liked the black one better.
And Camera+ did a better job of image manipulation. Though now you can't get it in the App Store.
@APV
Erm, you're complaining about the ICON COLOR on some app? :o woah! nerd!
Did anyone notice Jason in this picture?
Just look to the side, right side.
Amazing. You can edit photographs on the iPad.
Just f**king amazing.
@HKCally
Wow. It's a computer and it allows editing photos with proper software? Can't believe it.
@Bre
But only the iPad can do that with multi-touch that good. Other iPad apps turn its screen into an actual art canvas.
No retina quality graphics...sigh...at least it outputs the higher def images now
Does it have support for full resolution iPhone 4 photos. I tried to use the previous version the other day on mine and got some pretty funky results?
Its a good app
Not worth the money!
@camerafan
don't be dim
Been using my tablet PC for this for ages, WITH a real Wacom pen.
Interesting, I suppose for some things, though.
....for free? Damn. Don't they charge like $700 for CS5 and $100 for Elements? They could get away with at least charging a little for this, assuming it's a decent program. Props to Adobe. I'll deal with a few ads and what not if I can get a free mobile version of Photoshop.
@kenny goo
Considering all the competition that Photoshop has with free apps and programs, it really wouldn't make sense for Adobe to charge unless this Photoshop is well above the free apps.
Once they start piling on features, you end up with a program comparable to their more expensive products, and I doubt they'd want people turning to a $5 iPad app rather than their $80 Elements series.
Now I can fake UFO pics on the fly!
I screen cap a lot on the iPad, this is handy for quick tweaks.
adobe likes tough love why still tray to be friends whit apple better do it for all OS so he see that you don't need them
@R4F4
Adobe needs Apple more than ever as the iPad is already the biggest tablet platform on Earth and the iPhone has twice the share as Android.
well at least they are expanding
It is also available for Android Mr. Murph.
What's the point of this article. This is an old android app. Been available for some time.
Still not optimized for the retina display for iPhone 4 users, though. :(
