Axon Logic's Haptic tablet can run a desktop's OS, has a desktop's price
Half a year ago, you'd have been forgiven for expecting that today both Windows 7 and Mac OS X would have flagship tablets representing them, in the shape of the HP Slate and the Apple iPad. Alas, one of those devices ran away to enterprise land and the other opted for a mobile OS. It's against this backdrop of disappointment that Axon's Haptic tablet enters, with confirmation that its Atom-based innards are fully compatible with Linux, Windows and Mac operating environments. With a 10.1-inch resistive touchscreen, 320GB HDD, 2GB of RAM, and a trio of USB ports, it's another of those devices you could classify as a keyboard-less netbook, but at least its OS versatility will give it a leg up. Then again, with a pre-order price of $750 and no bundled OS licenses, we suspect it might need a little more than that to succeed where so many have failed.

Linux time?
@JimJam707 i love lamp
@JimJam707
I'd say F to tha mothaphukken AIL homeboi
where's all the jason pics photoshoped into the images?
you're not forgetting what day it is today, right engadget?
@JimJam707
anyone else think the top looks like a gesture area? Hello webOS
@toyotast165
Looks more like a slot for the stylus, considering it has a resistive touch panel.
@Vlad Savov
ahhh...there you go...engadget knows how to make this day special.
@Eric T Cartman
not exactly a device i'd choose to run a webserver tho'
gone again
This might give the iPad a run for its money
@EnergyPigeon ipad has half the ram of the iphone 4 if im correct
@big nazty
Wow... that's lame... As soon as you said that, I had to look it up.
Indeed, correct. I don't know how much of a difference that makes on it's overall performance. considering that it's processor is probably running at a higher clockspeed than the iPhone 4's.
But still...
@asgiov The same was said about my PS3 having so limited ram, but look at games like Uncharted 2. A spec sheet vs real world performance are 2 different things and the iPad is anything, but slow. The iPhone 4 is as fast if not faster then the iPad, just based on my browser tests.
@EnergyPigeon Depends; does this thing have a desktop's battery life?
@CityZen Yes it has, connected to an outlet all day long.
fu@k that $750 hells no
Specs? 1080p capable or just awful intel integrated graphics?
SSD would be good too.
@Sicarius123 Wow, scrap that.
Awful awful specs, resistive touch screen, wouldn't touch this with a barge pole.
@Sicarius123
1080p, like the Ipad?
@huzzlehoff
I don't need a device between a laptop and a smartphone that requires a PC to sync data to it, seems like a useless device to me. I want something specced like a top end netbook that can do anything I need it to.
@Sicarius123
I can't see those coming, cause of the battery life importance with this kind of device. I personally would buy a device between, just to browse media and school notetaking. Certainly a 1080p capable device with good battery life would be sweet!
@Sicarius123
What's the point of a 1080p Capable device without a 1080p display?
Seems like it would be completely pointless...
@asgiov how is it any different to having HDMI out on a HD capable mobile device?
Plus being a computer, sometimes the media you want to watch you only have access to in HD, why wouldn't you want to be able to watch that media?
@asgiov A bluray player also doesn't have a 1080p capable screen. In fact, it doesn't have a screen at all (for viewing video). But what does it do? Outputting the video of course.
That's 1. 2: If it's capable of 1080p playback you don't have to convert your video if you want to view it on the device. Videoconversion is very time consuming.
Its resistive.. hello no
So that's a no go....tablets need to have a few specs I would think standard
Capasative touch screen
1gig ram
100-500g HDD options
720p standard, 1080p upgraded
Choice of windows, OS X, Linux, or an easy boot option for personal install
And under 500 without upgrades
@23542354
1.Its "capacitive"
2.2gigs of RAM minimum for any
3.250-320gb HD 7200rpm
4.I could care less about supporting 1080 while I'm traveling... if I am on 3G, do I really want to be using my data on 1080 content? Even if I have it on my hard drive, whats the point? The screen wouldn't support it and if you want to 1080p content on a TV, buy/make a HTPC or buy a blu-ray.
5.It's illegal for another company to install OS X on a machine other than a Mac, A-la Psystar.
5a.Its technically illegal for a user to install OS X onto a machine other than a Mac....but my view is that I bought Snow Leopard, I have the right to install it on whatever I want.
I would pay $550-$600 on a tablet like this... much better than an iPad, but the Resistive screen sucks. Depending on how it is after I would get it, I would possibly decide to put a capacitive screen in there.
Or I could just make my own for $400.
@Apeman96
It's "couldn't care less"
Anyone else think the site is just one big apple rip!!!!
But of course people will compare this to the ipad, But to blatantly copy the site look!!!
WEAK!!!
Bluetooth at an additional fee!!! Come on!!
Bluetooth for an additional fee!!! LIKE WTF!!!
This is $250 too much otherwise I'd get it.
Sigh...
Time to get a phonecall from Apple's lawyers and buried like the... um...
what were they called...?
PSYSTAR....!!!!!
Ok AXON, you are dead meat.
not expecting much since this thing looks bad from beginning to end. BUT digitizer maker? anyone know?
That price "can" be acceptable, it really depends on built quality, materials, battery life, drivers update life span/support.
And what market are they targeting for...(can be you and me, hospital, construction, and more)
by the way, Engadget, the way you guys put up news... is getting worse, so much biased articles.
like for instance, as if as if anything rectangle...are call "shape of the HP Slate and the Apple iPad"...
Its just another 10.1 tablet, just like any other, and there are more that have existed long before ipad or HP Slate.
@comscier
putting 10.1" tablet, is much better than "shape of the HP Slate and the Apple iPad"
You guys are killing competition... Thats what i felt...
Hello guys,
Multitouch does not support a stylus. Using an Actual OS for anything but web browsing, you need a stylus. We didn't try to copy the site, but if you think thats the case I can have that changed. The website was launched yesterday. Bluetooth is not an additional fee. The tablet does come with a Windows 7 License. Battery life is a problem honestly, but to get it down to that size and weight we couldn't fix anything. However, the battery isn't internal. (It slides out) Therefore, if you need more battery, you can bring another one. It has 2GB of RAM and 320gb Hard Drive standard. Compared to the iPod, the Hard Drive alone is worth it.
This is Awesome, I have been waiting for this device since the SilverThorn was announced. If it were a 525 ION2 it would be PERFECT.
Another Archos 9 PC tablet. FAIL!
Flash videos probably plays jerky on it.
@rsuryase
Flash surely works... do u own a atom based netbook?
if you do, you should know...
with proper setup... it can play H264 720p videos too...
This does not include web flash h264 hi-def, since the adobe built-in web flash player sux...
if you use a standalone player using directshow, h264 720p flv will work.
@comscier Does this mean it won't play Hi-Def videos on YouTube? That would suck. I don't have netbook, only iPad. Archos 9 PC tablet use 1.2 GHz Atom CPU, youtube videos play jerky..
$750 for a resistive touchscreen?? F that. It's a friggin' paperweight.
@Ivan0310
some people prefer resistive touchscreen, depends on what you are doing with it.
if you are using it like ipad, this is not for you...
even fujitsu tablets uses resistive touchscreen, because it detects "pressure", which allows you to do a lot more... especially if you are writing or drawing on it.
@comscier This may be true; however, if this product is to be marketed to the general consumer--a resistive touchscreen just isn't going to fly.
@Ivan0310
Yea, probably. a lot of tablet fans, including me, use tablet to take notes on the tablet, with the stylus ...
its very frustrating writing on glassy screen like the ipad...
And there are a lot of people that prefers this kind of screen, there is a site call umpcportal, that focus on umpc and tablets, there you see more unbiased review, which covers up practical use, instead of what engadget always do, simply saying good or bad from the "price" of spec.
people keep blaming on the screen of this device and comparing it with ipad...
Ipad, is a toy/ a reader, with limited usage...
Resistive touchscreen is a lot more practical, for multi-purpose.
Do you ever, see hospital, military, construction site use tablet, ever uses capacitive screen? None...
capacitive screen exist long ago, but only uses in phones, mobile multimedia players, since they require no "writing" or any similar action. all they need to do is click/drag.
If you're buying a tablet with desktop OS uses capacitive screen... you will most likely to regret...
@comscier
by the way, for this product...
i would say, it would be much better with active digitizer...
active digitizer and resistive touchscreen are both acceptable...
since they are for two different groups of consumers
@comscier
Besides commercial and student use, I really don't see the need or desire by the majority of consumers to handwrite on a touch screen.
