Sony circles August 24 for all-new Alpha DSLR launch event
News has been a bit barren on the DSLR front lately (not counting Pentax's color explosion earlier on), but that's not going to last for much longer. Sony is starting up the fall refresh cycle with "never-before-seen" Alpha models, which will be shown off at an event on August 24 alongside the NEX-VG10 and some 3D-capable Cyber-shots. We've no way of knowing what's in store, but if you're in a speculative kind of mood, Sony Alpha Rumors suggests the new shooters will include a semi-transparent mirror (most intriguing!) and a pleasingly fast 10fps burst shooting mode. That's enough to whet our appetite, now bring on the full dish of details already.

semi-transparent mirror? Didnt canon file for a patent on that some time ago?
@Baconbits Yes but this mirror can move out of the way unlike the Canon Pelix.
Anyway, I want more auto-focusing Carl Zeiss glass for my a900.
The problem with devices like this coming out is that it means that HD video on proper DSLRs is likely to remain limited to differentiate the two products.
@Baconbits Sony also has a patent for semi-transparent mirrors in SLRs.
@thefiendster whats the point of it being semi transparent if it can move out of the way? in any SLR camera when the mirror folds up blocking any light from coming in through the viewfinder.
if it is semi transparent yet moves then it seems useless nd if it doesnt move thats just another layer of glass that will affect image quality.

It's so you can have light hitting the imaging sensor and still be able to use a standard phase-detect auto focus system for better AF response. So main sensor live view with full on SLR style phase detect AF.
You just got to love how sony mentions that food and drinks are going to be provided ^^
@Geez93 Reminds me of the South Park episode:
"Free Punch and Pie!"
@Geez93
What they dont mention is the blood splatter on the camera...
Sony need a semi-pro SLR to compete with the D300/7D/K-7
Their current lineup goes: very low end APS-C - low end APS-C - mid range APS-C - mid-to-high full frame - high end full frame.
Seriously, the price jump between the A550 and A850 goes from like 9000 dollar body - 3000 dollar body.
Sorry, make that 900 dollar body, not 9000.
Because it's under 9000
@TheRealCJ Vegeta, whats the price rating on that camera?
It's ... OVER 9000!
@TheRealCJ
Any reason you are leaving the A700 off that list?
@Madcat
Probably because until I took a look at the Sony website, I didn't know it existed. Most camera stores I've been to stock the A550, then the A850.
But I do apologise for my mistake.
@Madcat A700 isn't even available in Norway anymore. I'm guessing it's similar a lot of other places as well, quite simply, it's no longer a current model.
Bit surprising they'd phase it out without having a replacement ready, to be honest.
As far as I know, the A850 IS the replacement, which brings me back to my original point.
iPhone 4 camera killer?
Thank God that's an image of a REAL dslr on the left.
@Rany I meant right :S , its 2010 include an edit button for God's sake.
You reckon?
My DSLRs tend to look more... camera like, and less like words on paper.
should update the camera to be taking a picture of mr vorhees
New sony technology = new, better Nikon technology. I'm stoked :)
They have the best APS-C size sensor out there.
Uh no Jason in the picture? Am I missing something?
@thinkindependent Yup. The blood on the camera.
@kadajawi
It was added after the fact.
oh, no! not another semi-trans mirror! There was an SLR many years ago, the Pellix,by Pentax. A POS.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pellicle_mirror
@dave1812 Pellix was by Canon, not Pentax. And Sony patent looks nothing like that. The definition of "Pellicle" is very thin (so fixed, unmoveable) film-like mirror. Sony version (in the patent) can move, so must be thicker, so that word "pellicle" doesn't even apply to Sony camera. It's a totally different beast (if the rumors are true).
@oneguyks
ah, yes, you are correct. Don't know why I thought it was a Pentax. thanks for straightening that out.
Dave
that dslr has blood on it :O
what the hell.
@Wiggy Fuzz Look at the date, and then look at other photos on Engadget today.
My birthday is the same day as when this comes out. You know, if any one wants to buy me one.
Another 24 megapixel camera perhaps.
@Billy I think you're right. Taken from Apple's playbook, read between the lines. Aug 24th= 24mp prosumer SLR that shoots HD video and introducing 3D lenses. Look at the invite image, its has a red body. Have you ever seen a red Pro body SLR? no
They better come out with a reasonably priced alpha that has 1080p video. If not, I will eventually have to dump all my nice alpha/km lenses and switch to another system alltogether.
Nice touch on the picture. As much as I love the Jason sightings, the subtlety here is great.
EXMOR - R DSLR Sensors. ...Please.
YEAH JASON!!! killed someone!! :P
Canon already uses a semi-tranparent sub-mirror for autofocus.
Are you saying they have to pay Sony a royalty for this?
