tPhone competes with Apple Peel 520, turns your iPod Touch into a chubby phone
Well, it didn't take long for the Apple Peel 520 to go from pioneering phone-maker to competition. Enter the tPhone, an also derivatively named and similarly positioned device that attaches to an iPod Touch and turns it into a phone. This one packs a 1,200mAh battery, 50 percent larger than the Apple Peel, but offsets that by existing as a "super-duper thick" hard case that clips on to the Touch. It naturally also offers a SIM slot and a dock port, augmented by a handy microUSB port on the side. It'll set you back ¥700, about $100, so you're paying a bit of a premium over the $75 Apple Peel. Worth it given the extra bulk and cost? That depends: just how big are your pockets?

Ill take it if it can do 3G...
@Madcat Why would i buy this? an iPod touch is more expensive than an iphone! unless i'm really, really trying to avoid a two year contract, this is useless. i would rather spend $100 on an iphone 3gs than this and an ipod touch.
@Madcat
I have a feeling that's the point.
@Madcat
Def. a good idea. I don't know how well it will actually sell tho.
Considering ebay sells 3G's for maybe a couple bucks more.
@Madcat You're crazy man. These things are ridiculous. Why not just buy a real iPhone?
@Madcat
700 is not 100 bucks.
For 700 Yen, 8.16 dollars, this isn't a bad price at all.
Or did we typo 7000¥ = 81.6$ ?
@Madcat : Everyone loves a chubby (phone).
@sean4123
Sorry.. sarcasm didn't travel through the series of pipes very well. I was being sarcastic -all of these things are coming out, and yet offer nothing more than the basic phone service (no high speed data) at more than the total cost of a contracted iPhone..
@DRoizman
The article said Chinese yuan though...
700 Chinese yuan = 103.0064 US dollars (according to google)
@andrewwg94
I think you're missing the point, what if you already have an ipod touch? would it not be more economical to buy this than a $200 iphone on a 2 year contract that you have to pay $70-80 a month for... (atleast that's what we have to pay in Canada)
@andrewwg94
I'd rather spend $300 on an iPod touch 4 with 32GB memory, (iPhone 4 with 32GB memory is OH HAI GUESS WHAT $300.) and be happy with it.
@DRoizman 700 Chinese Yuan ~ 100 USD
@Madcat No contract..... iphone without contract even on craigslist is 500$+ for a iphone 4. I can get a ipod touch for 50$ and you can have an iphone on sprint and tmobile with their 3g service..... Thats if you want it THAT bad.
@dudedud999 No you don't. I live in Canada and EVERY major carrier has a 6GB/month data plan for $30 + the regular $25. That's 6GB/month + a plan for only $55.
@Madcat I have my BlackBerry Bold 9000 running PdaNet in one pocket, iPod Touch in the other pocket with iBluever.
Works!
@Madcat does anyone know if this can do 3g 2g or mobile data
@Madcat
and be on sprint
Put a regular iPhone in that, create a massive 3G feedback loop, destroy the planet.
@grub
Put a regular iPhone in that, get decent reception.
Don't down rank me, I had an iPhone once, and if I have trouble with my Desire for much longer, I'll probably go back.
No really, what's with the masks/masked guys!? Is it his birthday or something? I don't believe I saw the movie I suppose he starred in...
@etothej
oh wait I looked it up.. It IS friday the thirteenth today =P
Why the hell do all the pictures have jason in them!?
@DUKE546 It's Friday the 13th today...
@grub
LMAO forgot all about that! hahaha
@DUKE546 Same here, though at first, I thought there were fingerprints all over the iPod Touch's screen
@kero9x I thought it was pie...
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
Hahaha you made my day :)
I am actively looking for all the references to Jason. I love it haha
iphone locks you into a 2 year AT&T contract valued at over $2K over that time frame. With this I assume you can use a prepaid sim and depending on how often you use it cost just dollars over a year.
Wassup with the Jason mask?
@Apple Google Microsoft
Have you looked at a calendar lately?
@LiqwidZero
Oh yea! Scary :(
Is anybody actually buying this?
@smoof111 I would get it for my ipod touch, if I didn't have Sprint and two phones already
@smoof111 Quite possibly, for when I go home to England. I already have a Touch. I can buy a pre-paid SIM card, and use it an international (chunky) smartphone.
If this let's me use T-Mobile USA's 3G bands I might pick one up.
in other news: jason has finally got his facetime game on!
Quite brilliant, it's way cheaper than an iPhone! You can get a $300 iPhone, instead of $499-699 (that's what they cost without subsidy). If you have an iPod Touch it's only $100 more. The battery is pretty huge, should last long. Of course the speaker quality is probably not that great, although it remains to be seen.
This thing'll have more trouble losing weight than Kirstie Alley.
nice facetime for jason vorhees, awesome friday 13th gag haha!!
WHAT THE F IS UP WITH ALL THE JASONS ON THE ENGADGET POSTS
@MoonWalkerCTE
Check today's date for your answer
@MoonWalkerCTE
I'm offended
After all is said and done you would end up with a phone larger than the droid X, with a lot less power and no 3g. Save your money and give up fanboys. Apple is definitely being shown the door. Although it would be nice to see how the call quality is vs a legit iphone.
@Booboolala2000
Dear Fanboi(insert your OS here) nobody is showing apple the door, instead is opening another one for apple products to do more.
Ps the reason why this was made was to save money..try that analogy with Verizons pricing..... Ok ;)
Cant escape Jason people
@TPAYNE87
Can't escape people having no idea what's going on either. I'm checking all of Friday's posts just to see the clueless reactions...
KI-KI-KI-KI MA-MA-MA
Can Engadget compare the pros and cons. I know the Peel doesnt have mobile web, hell, if this thing does im buying it
@Tech Dude
You are correct that's what engadget china needs to do asap
Maybe if it worked on Verizon...
