Prototype of robot that develops emotions on interacting with humans officially complete
The first prototype of a Nao robot that can develop emotions as it interacts with a human caregiver has been completed. A team across Europe was led by Dr. Lola Cañamero of the University of Herefordshire in the UK to develop the bot, which differs in several significant ways from those that came before it. These robots develop over time in much the way that a child does, learning to interact with and respond to the human beings around them. Modeled after human and chimpanzee childhood development paths, they are programmed to be highly adaptable to the people around them, and to become attached to whatever person is most suited to its needs and 'personality' profile. Over time, the more they interact, the more they learn and bond to the human being. These little ones, moreover, are capable of expressing a wide range of emotions, including anger, frustration, fear and happiness. The next steps are to research the bots' emotional and non-linguistic behavior, and to move toward combining linguistic and non-linguistic communication to become further attached and adapted to them. Yes, we want one.

@VanNorden
"Wasn't there something like that on last night's episode of Futurama?" (repeat x6)
Wasn't this lil sob on Eureka last night
I have a question somewhat related to this article (please excuse my ignorance if any is found)
But AFAIK, researchers found out recently (maybe) how to program a computer to define logic and answer a question without checking it's databases.
Would this mean that since a computer is able to figure out something logical, would it also be able to question the illogical?
If mixed with this, feelings and logic.
Wouldn't that somehow define a personality if "it" could question something illogical based on an emotion?
Again, please excuse my ignorance.
@MikePX
And if so, would it be right to switch the robot off?
This is the beginning of our AI future except we're going to piss them off then they're going to kill us all...
So it learns from humans it interacts with, eh? So what will happen if it gets ignored, abused and tormented? Will it become a psychopath or a sociopath? Or both? Human emotions are to be controlled, not shared...
@Samurai Jack
Killer robot
I need a robot to clean the house and make good food. That would be wonderful to me, don't need to talk or interact with me, just do the job! I would pay the price of one car for It!
thankyou for changing the picture!
It was seriously freaky
But where do u stick ur pen1s? Lol
The elderly companion of the future.
I would pay any amount of money for this. And i'd name it Floyd.
@Mr M
Jet force gemini :)
@uhhmoney Close, i was referencing the classic text adventure 'Planetfall'. Floyd in GFG is no doubt named after the Planetfall Floyd, though.
@uhhmoney
i guess I just told my age there! I was a little young when the text adventures were hot in the streets... or on the screens... :P
So... Do they have a plan!?
The Nao Bot looks like Freezer from Dragon Ball Z!
I wanna jailbreak this.
@ailtonnc Repeating this doesn't really improve it.
Isn't that the same kind of Nao robot form the Aldebaran Robotics Nao Robot Show aka "lord of the dancing droids" :D
@LauRoman

What your'e really saying is that they've developed Genuine People Personalities for robots. And so the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation is born. We can all look forward to a future of depressed elevators and frighteningly cheerful autochefs.
Frakkin Cylon...
Its 'bout time. Been waiting for a robot best friend since birth.
It's a great achievement but maybe they should sell its AI software to Honda for Asimo...Nao moves like #$%... (sorry Nao, don't get angry with me...it's not your fault...Nao...drop the knife down! ...stay away from me..! AAaaaaaahhh)
You have spelled my universities name wrong it should be the University of Hertfordshire not the University of Herefordshire.
One of it's key features in development is to be able to remotely control and relay data to fellow units. Through a "Sky based network".
Just thought i'd correct a little - well actually a big - mistake in this article. Dr. Lola Cañamero is a researcher from the University of HERTFORDSHIRE not HEREFORDSHIRE. Herefordshire is a country that has no university. Get it right people!!
@willparker How could they get the name wrong! Such a mistake.
"It's okay. Show us on the plush R2-D2 where the bad man touched you."
I don't like where this is going at all :S... iRobots much?
Isn't this thing has been out for several months? Robotshop sell it for about USD 17500. Wish I have that much.
Oh no, EMO ROBOTS?
"This is not the future my mother told me about"
You might wanna get the university name correct next time, it's Hertfordshire not Herefordshire!
"Prototype of robot that develops emotions on interacting with humans officially complete"
Here "emotions" should be described or replaced by "behaboiral patterns that simule emotions". We are hundreds of years away from the day we create a machine that develops emotions, in case we ever achieve that goal. People should talk correctly when writing articles or press releases. If not, it's like talking about extraterrestials visiting us. Just nonsense.
This is getting too weird.
Whi h one is the robot in that picture
@willow lol thats exactly what i was thinking haha hope that titan rover isn't out and about looking for its baby doh
so glad Eurekas back on the air too its amazing
THE TIMELINE HAS CHANGED!! skynet no longer wants to eradicate humans because of their innate stupidity and likelihood of killing themselves and the planet.. it will now "GUIDE" humans and care for them... AT EVERY TURN!! THEY ARE GOING TO KILL US WITH KINDNESS!
The matrix is real... soon emotions... soon elections... soon a war between mankind and robots... soon we gonna be batteries
A man can create anythings, to remember his overlords Creator

I'm a robot, and us robots don't have emotions. Sometimes that makes me sad.
Didn't I see this little guy on a recent Eureka episode?
