Apple hires NFC expert to manage mobile commerce, prepare to pay with your iPhone
Don't look now, but things may be getting real on the pay-with-your-cell-phone front, as Cupertino's hired a man with years of experience in enabling just that to finally get 'er done. According to his LinkedIn profile, Benjamin Vigier is Apple's new Product Manager of Mobile Commerce, immediately following his handiwork on PayPal Mobile, Sprint MyMoneyManager and the iPhone-based Starbucks Card. Before that, he spent two years heading SanDisk's mobile commerce and near-field communication efforts and over a year doing NFC for Bouygues Telecom, so it's not much of a stretch to imagine the futuristic concert tickets depicted in Apple's recent patent applications might become reality before long. Either that, or he'll wind up on a completely unrelated project, only to leave under mysterious circumstances later on.

Interesting that the drawing has the newest icon on the right...
@Mikey P Sweet, waiting in long lines, sucks. Losing a ticket that you bought is even worse. Hopefully this does iAd/AdMob don't bother anyone in our devices to much.
@Mikey P
I guess someone didn't know how the new icons work! Oops :I
it would suck to have tickets on there and hold it the wrong way so the tickets were no longer usable....
@Mikey P
That is the layout of the original iPhone. See there's no iTunes or App store app. And this is a new patent?
@aznipredroid
Buying tickets on your iPhone..... $45
Getting a new outfit..... $35
Battery dying out once you get to the front of the line..... Priceless
For everything else, there's the physical world.
@Plazmic Flame True the "physical" word is more efficient than certain virtual world products. However products such as this (virtual) can enhance or make the physical easier to obtain/retain/maintain information.
@Plazmic Flame
If people fly with e-tickets on their phones.... They can make events...
@Mikey P Don't even understand how this can even be patented since this tech is used in many places already, It is stupid that the USPTO lets even patents like this be filed
@Mikey P
Not interesting at all
@Plazmic Flame
Japanese phones' FeliCa chips works without much power. No matter how much juice is left in battery you can expect it to *beep* as usual.
@Mikey P : Now the Apple mothership will know what you eat, drink, wear, rub on your body, and your current location. *puts on tin foil hat* :)
@Plazmic Flame An outfit for $35? Where do you shop, Wal-Mart?
well you can already scan your airplane tickets on your phone in japan so this comes as no surprise to me. just slow travel of technology.
@captainsb you can do it here in the US too. I have done it on A/A, I believe Delta and Alaska also do it in select airports.
@captainsb Indeed, just because a technology is not yet available in the US doesn't mean it's new and "futuristic".
There's nothing "futuristic" about ticketing in mobile phones. It's already available in many places, and the ideas are at least ten years old.
Yet again one thing that Apple "invented", like using mobile phones for making video calls... The "innovation" they are going to make is that the implementation s Apple specific so that it doesn't work with anything else on the markets. Apple is new Microsoft.
@machat You can already check in on Lufthansa (German flag carrier) flights by having a QR image of your boarding pass on your iPhone scanned at check-in. This is probably a year old now.
@airmanchairman Lufthansa service is not Iphone specific, they have the app for Nokia and Blackberry as well.
@captainsb
also this has been a rumor for years now.
@machat,
They're not saying they invented this, but you can't do this on the iphone right now, so perhaps they submit this to avoid a third-party from creating an app that does?
Kiss my ass mobile payments pimps.
Like I want my information on your mobile devices...
@Sofabutt
Word.
@Sofabutt
Exactly. Seeing that this technology has been in use in Japan for years I would venture to say it hasn't picked up in the US because people are afraid of identity theft.
How do they expect to scan a barcode, if I cant even get the people at best buy to scan my rewards card off the screen.
Andriod just got pwned
I wonder if this will only be for iphone 4 because of the high res screen and that would be needed for scanning the barcode.
@massalo
The screen doesn't really have anything to do with it. Pretty much any mobile phone camera these days has enough resolution to scan barcodes of various types. My HTC Hero has several apps that can do this already.
@massalo
I think he means scanning the barcode off the screen.
@JS
You can use your smartphone to display your airline ticket to scan at airports so I think it's safe to say pretty much every smartphone has a high enough resolution screen for the barcodes.
@massalo
high res screen wouldn't be required. I had no issues using my phone (N85, 320x240 reso) as my boarding pass when I flew Continental a couple months ago.
@massalo
Any old Nokia n95 can be used for flying, subway, star bucks etc tickets/reward card that need scanning. I wouldn't worry with 3G/3GS.
What happened to Square
@tylersmyler square is for receiving payments from other peoples credit cards, and I believe it is now shipping. This is for making payments.
Funny how there's no lack of innovation when it comes to finding easier ways to spend money.
cool
One more step to the cash-less society. Abandon all hope!
As enticing as it is to purchase a device that allows me to hand over yet more of my power and privacy to The Man, I'll pass.
Looking ahead, the bargaining power of cash for local purchases away form the prying eyes of The Man is the way forward.
That and money laundering, of course.
@DistantHere
Here. Have a tinfoil hat. It's on the house, this time only.
@Almo
Exrta hilarious coming from a person that keeps their profile private :)
if its safe and secure and has an economic benefit. then this will work :)
It also depends if the ticket bodies want Apple to take a slice of their pie (make money from them)
why did you down rank my comment i see people talking shit about apple all the time and they get ranked up
Cashier: Cash or Credit?
D-bag: iPhone!
@TareG
Let me guess. If this were announced for any phone or os other than Apple's, you would be fine with that. Right? Because we all know there are no d-bags or hypocrites using Android phones.
@Jack Yeah move on, apple fanboy. Real progress has nothing to do with this stupid waste of human intelligence and time. Don't even bother replying another of your Apple sermons/ preaching.
As if there wasn't already enough reason for someone to steal your iPhone.
Now you too can accept iPhone's just like credit cards! Apple only takes a mere 30% of each transaction!
Dear Apple,
How about u put this little "innovation" on the back burner and get back to the real issue at hand...
Notification system.
@Tizzle93
*proximity sensor
*OSX 10.7
*Verizon
@Tizzle93
They already hired Palm's WebOS notifications guy. They're obviously working on it. What more do you want?
How many people on this site hate apple? please reply
