Sharpie Liquid Pencil doesn't dry like a Sharpie
We were pretty excited about the Sharpie Liquid Pencil when we first heard about it -- it uses liquid graphite to write like a pen, erase like a pencil, and (supposedly) dry like a permanent marker after three days. Well, it's been just over a week since our first hands-on, and we've got some bad news: we can still erase what we've written pretty easily. If you squint just right it sort of looks like it might have dried a little darker, but it's certainly not Sharpie-level permanence. Sad faces all around. We've followed up with Sharpie to see what's going on and we'll let you know what we hear, but check the video after the break in the meantime.

BRING IN THE CLASS ACTION LAWYERS!
@DCTenor1 BRING IN THE IDIOTS.......wait you're already here!
@Khris (I was being tongue-in-cheek)

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only stationary geek around here.
(Looks around furtively)
@Johnny Tremaine I believe you mean Stationery. Obviously not a grammar geek! =P
@Johnny Tremaine We are NOT alone! (tear)
@LinksAwakener
I kind of am, but that's what slapping a quick comment up on engadget will do. The faster I type, the more my spelling suffers.
My English Lit profs would be mortified.
Anyway, I think I'll go browse the aisles of Staples to get my geek on.
@LinksAwakener May be we was referring to his lack of movement, he is a (non-moving) Geek.
@Johnny Tremaine
most geeks are stationary, thus the weight gains.
@Killing Time
Not to toot my own horn, by I'm actually quite slim, with the running and the twice weekly Kempo classes.
So yeah, *stationery* not *stationary*
@Johnny Tremaine Sadly, we don't have these in my store yet. I asked our DM about them.....but the poor sot had no clue what I was talking about.
@Johnny Tremaine As many others have stated, you are not alone brother. You really can't beat a good pen. Find one that writes smooth as silk with no bleeding. Just the right amount of ink per stroke.....no wonder my wife looked at me weird when I got excited about this liquid pencil. lol I too am disappointed that it doesn't dry as it should. I was hoping to get one for sketching.
More like...permanot!
I had no idea "permanence" was a word.
(Gets out tuba to practice)
OMG! This is going to change EVERYTHING, no more deciding if I should write a date in PEN or in PENCIL!
@Benlo It's amazing! It's like a pen and a pencil all in one, they could call it a pen...cil... a PENCIL!
Nice handwriting, much nicer than mine!
Nice handwriting, much nicer than mine!
I feel lied to. Hopefully they improve on the tech.
@Templarian Like...with lasers or something??
@Templarian This issue has been addressed by Sharpie and will be fixed in the next firmware update :-)
But seriously, I'm going to buy one of these simply for the anti-smear factor.
I think I'd prefer it this way anyways. A pencil that writes smoothly like a pen, with no need to fiddle with lead? Great.
@satbir agreed, i'm left handed though so i'm just waiting for pen/pencil that wont muff up my hand when i write, if they accomplish that an i will be a happy camper
@satbir That's just the thing. It doesn't write smoothly.
I was so excited about this, I ordered them the day they were announced. They got here this morning, and I've been trying to use one all day to give it a fair shake.
It doesn't write smoothly at all. It jumps and skips and basically feels like writing with sandy ink. Give me my Pentel GraphGear 1000 any day.
NNNNNNOO-- ehh who cares?
Hey, I can't find them. Where did you get your pencils from???
@Sparks
Amazon is where I got mine.
@benr Cool, going to pick up some now!!
I ordered mine when this original article popped up. Its coming today I think. Interested to see what this looks like.
@HowardtheDuck
What happens if you leave the cap off the "pencil"?
Did you guys test it on regular loose leaf paper? Not trying to defend Sharpie, but maybe the paper you're using is too thick to dry fast enough. I don't know how these things work though; Just a thought.
@unseenvision It's a Moleskine, so while the paper is a little thicker than looseleaf, it's still not particularly thick. I sent an email to Sharpie, we'll see what they say -- there were no caveats about drying time or exposure to air / light / cosmic rays on the box or in the PR, so I'm curious.
@Nilay Patel Yeah, but maybe because it's in a notebook, it's not exposed to the air to dry. It's possible that the 3 day thing only applies to paper that has been left out to dry.
@Bob the Terrorist
Then it should say so on the box. Nilay said there were no caveats listed.
@Nilay Patel
Does it smear with water though after 7 days? I personally like the fact that it is still erasable assuming it doesn't smear at all due to water or just rubbing. I personally love pencils because I make so many mistakes but the smearing drives me nuts. I had a lot of notes sort of ruined because I got water on them (apparently the only part of my Swiss-gear backpack that is water proof is the bottom, the water just pooled in the thing when I went to class. I really don't suggest their backpacks btw especially for like the $90 list price, thankfully mine was only like $35.)
@reallynotnick Swiss gear bags are good because they have a 10 year warrenty! I exchange mine almost every year, its great :D
While it may not work as advertised, I can see some people still liking it as-is...after all pencils are erasable... so this gives you a pen that writes like a pencil, and erases like one, too, without the risk of breaking your lead or needing to sharpen it. Still thinking about buying one next time I'm in the stationary isle. But I'm definitely in no hurry ;)
@HowardtheDuck
Maybe it would dry better if it wasn't in a notebook. 3 days might only apply to pages exposed to open air.
this has nothing to do with engadget... ?
@ChrisVpeace
Neither do you.
I'm sure someone will figure out how to jailbreak it.
@(Unverified)
Yes. Yes it was.
@HowardtheDuck This is just terrible news, I was looking forward to this...
Whoa!
But Why's that bad? liquid pencil alone is awesome enough?
@zuogolpon Awesome? Liquid pencils have been around for like, 50 years. Go check an old Parker catalogue.
"You were holding it wrong ..." -Sharpie Development Team
You guys are really hurting that bad for news?
@dan991199 My god dan991199, would you prefer a pointless Apple story?!?
Actually, this is good tech news. It is a follow-up, an actual test. Sure pen and paper technology isn't the geekfest of the smartphone drama, but it is new tech.
I say, thanks for the follow up. Now I know not to believe the claims on this product.
