Opera confirms its Devices SDK is behind Boxee TV's HTML5 apps

It's been available since last month, but browser-maker Opera has only today confirmed that it's Opera Devices Software Development Kit is providing the backend for the Boxee TV's HTML5 apps. Those already include the likes of YouTube, Spotify and Vimeo, but Opera says one of the big advantages of Boxee using the SDK is that future apps built with it will be able to be easily ported to the Boxee TV -- no word on any big additions just yet, though. Boxee's COO Tom Sella also notes that using the SDK "enabled us to add a lot of apps to Boxee TV without a lot of effort on our part." If that sounds a bit familiar, it's because it largely echoes Opera's promise from last year to provide smart TV and set-top box makers with an easy-to-deploy solution filled with cross-platform apps. Opera + Boxee, just in time for Christmas
San Mateo, USA - December 19, 2012

Opera Software and Boxee today announced that the Opera Devices Software Development Kit (SDK) is powering the HTML5 experience on Boxee TV, a brand-new streaming media player that offers the world's first cloud DVR, live TV, and Internet Apps.

The Opera Devices SDK powers applications like YouTube, Spotify, Vimeo and WSJ Live, allowing customers to enjoy the best of the Internet on their TVs. Add Boxee's DVR and broadcast TV channels to the mix, and the Opera-powered Boxee TV becomes a perfect gift for the holidays – all for under $100.

The power of Opera's cutting-edge technology, with the most robust performance and standards support, gives Boxee TV access to more online video and provides users with the best experience while using Boxee's integrated Apps. The Opera-powered Boxee TV is currently available throughout the United States in Walmart retail locations and at www.boxee.tv.

With this partnership, Boxee has thrown its weight behind HTML5 Apps, and Opera is currently the best solution to achieve that on embedded devices. Another advantage to Boxee users will be the growing number of Apps that will be available, as Opera expands its ever-growing portfolio of HTML5 Apps that can be easily ported to Boxee devices.

"In our world, content is king. Using Opera enabled us to add a lot of Apps to Boxee TV without a lot of effort on our part," says Tom Sella, COO, Boxee. "In addition, working with Opera ensures our content library is well positioned to grow as more companies create HTML5 Apps."

"All I want for Christmas is more TV shows, movies and online video," says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. "'Tis the season to give and receive, and finding a Boxee TV powered by Opera under the tree will make all those dreams come true."
