Targus debuts the Touch Pen for Windows 8, we go handson

The Targus Touch Pen for Windows 8 is a paintbrush that you can rub all over you Windows 8-enabled PC monitor, whether or not it's actually a touchscreen. By using an independently powered dongle attached magnetically to one side of the screen, the Targus Touch Pen's strokes are picked up as both actions in the "Modern" UI and within a painting application we were shown (running on a non-touch Acer laptop). It's hard to imagine many folks using the Touch Pen for its touch capabilities, but we sure could see ourselves spending an afternoon using it for electronic painting. Regardless, the pen retails for $100 and becomes available to aspiring digital artists everywhere in Q2 2013. Take a peek past the break at our hands-on video for a better idea of what you'll be getting yourself into.

Targus® Turns Your Laptop Into a Touchscreen Device with Its New Touch Pen for Windows® 8

Exclusive to Targus, The Innovative Touch Pen Easily Allows You to Enjoy All of the Capabilities of Windows 8 Without Having to Buy a New Laptop

LAS VEGAS, NV – January 7, 2012 – CES 2013 - Targus® Inc., maker of the world's top-selling laptop computer cases and accessories, today announced a new, groundbreaking device for laptops and Ultrabooks running the Windows® 8 operating system - the Touch Pen for Windows 8. It is the only solution that can make any Windows 8 laptop a touchscreen device. Now there is no need to buy a new laptop to enjoy the touch features Windows 8 has to offer. It is the ideal solution for consumers and multi-tasking professionals looking to make their laptop a more dynamic and productive tool.

"People are excited about Windows 8, but not everyone can afford to buy a premium touch laptop. Users are looking for a solution that lets them experience the touch features of Windows 8 with their current laptop," said Carolyn Perrier, vice president of Accessories at Targus. "Targus is the market leader in styluses and has the only product that can convert your Windows 8 laptop into a touchscreen device. With touch mice and touchpads, you have to learn new gestures, but the Touch Pen is almost as easy as using your finger. It's the most intuitive touch solution and makes your laptop fun to use. "

Exclusive to Targus, the Touch Pen's patented technology simulates the finger touch experience. A small receiver attaches to the side of the laptop screen and communicates with the Touch Pen so your laptop thinks it has a touchscreen. The Touch Pen allows you to swipe, slide, and harness all the great features of Windows 8. Touch functionality will also provide a fast, fluid way to switch between apps, move items within apps, or smoothly navigate from place to place. The Touch Pen requires no software or drivers. A simple one-time calibration is needed-this is essential so that that the Touch Pen's receiver can determine the boundaries of the screen. It works with all Windows 8 installed laptops or monitors up to 17".

Available in black (AMD002US), the Touch Pen is available at an MSRP of $99.99. This along with other Targus accessories can be purchased at Targus.com as well as through leading retailers, VARs, e-tailers, and direct marketers.
