Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo 3DS

Price: $149.99 (Regularly $169.99). Free shipping.
Buy: Target

Nintendo's latest hand-held endeavor may have taken its lumps in its first year or so, but has found its footing and is now living large as the hottest-selling game console. The initial price cut from $249.99 to $169.99 helped with its momentum, and now and then it plunges well below its current MSRP. Its knockout, Mario- and Zelda-rich software lineup continues to expand, with the quality of its games generally trouncing smartphone competitors. And that's before taking into account the fact that it can play DS games as well.

RCA 32-inch 720p 60Hz LED HDTV

Price: $219.99 (MSRP $299.99). Free shipping.
Buy: Kmart

This low-spec, dirt-cheap HDTV makes sense as a bedroom, garage, exercise room or dorm/small apartment set. Its thin LED stature, two HDMI ports and VGA input make it a reasonable option as a computer monitor, and its low-end resolution won't stand out quite as much as it would on a larger screen. We haven't seen this model professionally reviewed, but the Kmart crowd digs it, with 40-plus reviews giving the product a four-star average.

Samsung Smart HDTV

Samsung 40-inch LED Smart 1080p HDTV

Price: $479.99 (Regularly $529.99). Free shipping.
Buy: Target

Even in this era of plunging HDTV prices, it's unusual to find a web-connectable, mid-sized, full-HD set from a top manufacturer at a price like this. The main hesitation is its second-class 60Hz refresh rate. Also, we could do with more than three HDMI inputs. Still, this Samsung has the size to be a daily driver, and at half the price of other sets of comparable size and specs.

Dell Inspiron

Dell Inspiron 660s Slim Desktop PC

Price: $379.99 (Next best is $409). Free shipping.
Buy: Dell

A worthwhile back to school desktop, the Inspiron's skinny form factor helps it squeeze into small workspaces. Although upgrades to the hard drive and RAM are available, its basic 4GB memory and 500GB SATA hard drive should get the job done for most. It's bundled with Windows 7, but looking back at our mixed review of Windows 8, maybe that's not such a drawback.

Kindle Fire HD

Kindle Fire HD 7-inch 16GB

Price: $159 (Lowest price ever; MSRP is $199.99). In-store only.
Buy: Staples

Amazon's me-too tablet continues to sink to lower prices, with this one edging out Best Buy's option by $0.99. Its sorry app economy is well-documented, but Amazon's daily free app makes the shortcomings easier to tolerate. The tablet's bright display helps make up for occasionally sluggish loading times and app switching.

Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

Price: $19.99 (Regularly $39.99). Eligible for free shipping/Prime.
Buy: Amazon

One of the best-reviewed games of 2012, the open-world shooter places you in the fraying shoes of a sheltered party boy. Stranded on a remote island run by thugs, he transforms himself into a ruthless survivalist who scrapes his way up the food chain. The price has been declining steadily, and it is now popping up at less than $20. If you can't stand the wait of ordering it online, GameStop has it available in-store at that price, as well as the Xbox 360 version online. Shipping charges apply, though.
