From idea to exhibition: developing art for Google

Digital Revolution is an art exhibition currently running at London's Barbican Centre. Part of the exhibition is Google's "DevArt" project -- a selection of code-based installations. Google commissioned three established artists for the show, and ran a competition to find an up-and-coming artist to join them. Below we take a look at how an idea goes from concept, to code, to creation.

Before any code is written, or a single panel erected, Lartigue and Diagne have to make sketches of how their interactive installation -- Les métamorphoses de Mr. Kalia -- will look.

We're pretty sure Michael Angelo didn't need to debug any of *his* work, but when you're making DevArt, you've got to make sure it's running as planned, before unleashing it on the public.

The empty exhibition hall before any installations are put in place. Béatrice Lartigue, one of the project's co-creators, double checks the set-up proportions and floor plans before the final build.

With the code working and the art space ready to go, Lartigue and Diagne can start testing the set-up in situ. Once complete, all four of the DevArt installations are opened to the viewing public, that, fittingly, took to the internet to give their thoughts...
