Google's Verily has its own robot-surgery spinoff
The company's a collaboration with Johnson & Johnson.
It hasn't even been a week since Verily became an official Alphabet entity, and it's already announcing its own spinoff. The former Google X Labs Life Sciences division has collaborated with Johnson & Johnson to give rise to a new company called "Verb Surgical." J&J's press release didn't mention any specific project, but from what we can tell, it's developing robotic technologies for the operating room:

In the coming years, Verb Surgical aims to develop a comprehensive surgical solutions platform that will incorporate leading-edge robotic capabilities and best-in-class medical device technology for operating room professionals. The goal of Verb Surgical is to develop these new technologies in partnership with surgeons and hospitals to enable better patient outcomes, improve access to minimally invasive surgery, and achieve greater hospital efficiency.
According to Wired, Verb has already hired over a hundred people and will operate out of Mountain View, just like its parent corporation. Verily CEO Andrew Conrad told the publication that Verb Surgical is the first company it launched with a partner. And since the spinoff did say that it intends to work with more companies outside of Alphabet, it may not be the last.
