Dress lit up with 24,000 LEDs, perfect for your next formal rave

In general, we've found the whole LED dress craze to be kind of a snoozer -- after all, the results are usually pretty tacky, in our opinions. It seems, however, that all that has just changed -- with the introduction of Cute Circuit's Galaxy Dress, which is made of silk and has 24,000 LEDs measuring just 2 by 2-millimeters each embroidered onto its surface. As you can see from the photograph, the dress is also quite classic and beautiful -- not your usual raver's delight. To make the dress lighter and more flexible than your average light-enhanced couture, the designers used layers of organza crinoline and silk chiffon, and they power the dress with many small iPod batteries, which are light and easily hidden in the dress. The Galaxy Dress is currently on exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago -- but you can check it out for yourself in the video after the break.

Samsung's WinMo 6.5-powered Armani smartphone gets previewed

Got a cool grand to drop on a Windows Phone? Oh, yeah? Then have a gander at Samsung's latest fashion piece, the Armani-branded M7500. The cool cats over at PhoneArena managed to get their paws around a unit, and as predicted, they didn't hesitate to bust out the camera and give us all a good look. They also took the chance to give us a brief overview of how the handset handled, calling it "bulky even for a WinMo smartphone," though praising the high-res display and well-spaced keyboard. Feel free to hit the read link if you're interested in more, but don't be shocked to hear more than a little criticism.

iida Ply and Prismoid phones strut their stuff at CEATEC (video)

While Fujitsu's design entrants already boggled our minds here at CEATEC, KDDI au is looking to take things one step further by actually shipping a pair of decidedly futuristic handsets in Japan. Just months after the iida sub-brand was formally launched, the Ply and Prismoid are making their debuts on the show floor. The latter sports a 2.7-inch primary display, a 0.6-inch OLED sub-display, a microSD expansion slot and a design to die for; the former packs a 3.2 megapixel camera, 1seg TV tuner and a 3-inch panel. Have a look at the gallery below (and video past the break) if you're yearning to see just how lovely a dumbphone can be, and trust us when we say you've only yourself to blame if you carelessly let this opportunity pass you by.

Samsung Armani specifications and press shots emerge: mmm, luscious

You know, if it weren't so early in the morning, we might just think Samsung's latest Armani slider (more formally known as the SPH-W8200) was a gilded Instinct HD with a pull-down number pad. We're going to do our best to pretend there's really something more here, starting with the fact that the Giorgio Armani logo beneath the screen is probably worth more than half of our belongings... at least according to Craigslist. At any rate, the first glimpse at this here phone's specifications has finally emerged, and while some tidbits are still up in the air, we do know that it'll arrive with a 3.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen, a DMB TV tuner, 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, Bluetooth and a microSD expansion slot. Too bad the price will inevitably overshadow all of that, but hey, fashion ain't cheap -- ya heard?

Sony Ericsson eyes fashionistas with Dolce&Gabbana Jalou clamshell

Remember that geometrically-inspired Bao handset we peeked back in July? Turns out Sony Ericsson has another name for it: Jalou. Announced today in both boring and limited edition Dolce&Gabbana versions, the compact-esque clamshell is definitely designed to put "style" first and substance last. Reportedly shorter than "your favorite lipstick," the cellie is actually marketed more as an accessory and less of a phone, boasting a diamond shape design, two-inch display, 3.2 megapixel geotagging camera, video recording, built-in mirror (seriously), an FM tuner, Bluetooth 2.0, multimedia player, step counter, antediluvian web browser and quad-band GSM / tri-band HSPA connectivity. The "normal" version is expected in Q4 in Deep Amethyst, Aquamarine Blue and Onyx Black, while the 24k gold-plated D&G edition will ship in Sparkling Rose along with a matching Bluetooth headset and fanciful packaging. No prices are mentioned for either, naturally.

Video: HRP-4C 'fashion robot' is getting married, won't shut up about it

Ok, ok, "she" isn't really getting married, that would be illegal outside of Massachusetts. Besides, HRP-4C is already hitched, apparently, to her creator Kazuhito Yokoi who appeared at the Osaka fashion show dressed in a tuxedo. Looking wobbly, perplexed, and creepy as hell, HRP-4C bravely slipped on a helmet of taffeta and lace in what's being called her first professional runway appearance. The crowd seemed to enjoy it until HRP-4C turned on them with her green lasers. Really, see for yourself in the unsettling video embedded after the break.

Keepin' it real fake, part CCXXV: Fashion A10 netbook strikes a pose, Acer-style

Sadly, plenty of folks just can't seem to shake the notion that "netbooks" and "high fashion" go hand in hand -- and clearly the KIRFmeisters of Shenzhen and environs are no exception. As if that couldn't be any clearer, the kids at Shanzai.com have clued us in on the JingWah Digital Fashion A10, a note-by-note replica of the Aspire One. Aside from the 1.6GHz VIA C7-M CPU, the similarities are striking, including: an 8.9-inch TFT display with a 1024 x 600 resolution, 160GB hard drive, and 1GB of RAM. Sure, it's no powerhouse, but if the price is right it'll make a pretty decent accessory. In fact, throw on your Momenta necklace and slap on a pair of 4GB Calvin Kleins and you'll be able to strut past any velvet rope your encounter (provided the line at the door leads to a LAN party or the BiMonSciFiCon). Calvin Klein gets into the Crapgadget biz

Yup, we see a ton of flash drives round here -- but this is the first one we've seen from the august house of Calvin Klein. Somehow, these sunglasses with a 4GB flash drive stuffed into the right stem are simultaneously uninteresting and horrifying to us... though we certainly enjoy the mental imagery of spotting someone sporting these while half a stem-piece is jammed into their laptop. If you're enough of a fashion victim to consider purchasing these bad boys, they'll be unleashed on the waiting world in October, and run you about $200.

Nintendo / C64 purse is runway-caliber fashion accessory

Look: there are purses, and then there are purses. Well, this one is none of those things. It's a decent looking bag to begin with, but then... well, things get really fantastic. Jeri Ellsworth took it upon herself to cram a Nintendo-on-a-chip and a Commodore 64-on-a-chip (her own creation) into the bag, along with an LCD. Then she connected up some NES controllers, which are velcroed onto the outside of the bag. The result looks awesome, and is also actually useable. We haven't heard anything about these guys being offered for sale, but we're fairly certain that the august House of Dior will probably be ringing her up any day now. Seriously: this thing is a work of art. There's a video of Jeri talking about her creation after the break.

Acer's custom Aspire One netbook: Heinous, exemplified

If the Acer Aspire One netbook above makes you feel uncomfortable, even angry, then you're probably not a Japanese school-girl. Hell, even if you are we hope you have the good sense not to paste stuffed animals, taffeta, and frills to your Atom-based netbook. That's what UMPCs are for.

August House of Chanel designs Segway, for real

The Vivienne Tam-designed Mini 1000 was a cute foray of high fashion into the uber-geeky tech world, but not necessarily completely out of left field. Well, this one is. The word that Chanel has designed a Segway comes as a horrifying surprise to all of us. There's not too much information floating around about this one yet, so we have no idea how many they're making or what they're going to cost (the Ferrari model runs about $12,000), but we know they won't be cheap. Looking good never is...

Vertu Signature Dragon handset puts the 'ugh' in 'luxury'

It looks like Vertu isn't resting on its laurels -- a mere two years after snatching the "world's ugliest phone title" with its Signature Cobra, the company's back with the Signature Dragon. What can we say about this one? Not much, seeing as how the thing isn't even listed on the company's website. Even so, since the Cobra retailed for over a quarter of a million bucks we're guessing this new handset ain't gonna be cheap. Feel free to sneak a peek at the thing in the Vertu store in Las Vegas's Wynn Hotel when you hit the town for CES. As an aside, when researching this post we came across an erotic French novel titled Dragon de Vertu which is on sale for about $30. Even if you don't read French, we still think it'd be a better use of your hard earned cash -- and if you do read French, please underline the good parts before you pass it on to us.

Toshiba intros 'stylish' line of hard drives to match your purse, coke habit

Toshiba -- clearly feeling the heat from other fashionable external hard drive makers -- has introduced a new line of disks guaranteed to bring on a neon flashback from your disco days (or Eurotrash nightmares). The three new models come decked out in the 160GB "Gecko Green," 250GB "Hot Rod Red," and 320GB "Carbon Grey" variations, with USB 2.0 ports and 8MB buffers on-board. The drives are Mac and PC compatible, and are available now for $89.99, $179.99, and $199.99, respectively.

Update: Apparently these drives have been out for a little while (thanks commenters!), so feel free to quiet any alarms that may have been sounded.

Nubrella: tomorrow's fashion mistake, today!

This is frankly brilliant. A hands-free umbrella is perfect for walking to work while yapping on your phone with one hand and cradling a cup of coffee with the other. Unfortunately it's just never going to make it past the "my friends will laugh at me" stage, because they will. They will laugh so very hard. It's a cruel, backwards society we live in, and it's no wonder we don't have flying cars yet. That said, you can destroy your own fashion credibility today for a mere $59.99. Maybe the fanny pack types will accept you, but we can't make any guarantees.

Microsoft CES fashion show flaunts (some) good looking gear

Not content with Apple's design team running circles around the PC world, Microsoft has created a team dedicated to helping OEM manufacturers make their boxes less beige and boring. Ingredients may include: aluminum, leather, carbon fiber and, uhh, cow fur. Microsoft held a fashion show at CES this year to show off the fruits of the PC world's collective efforts, and luckily betanews was there to nab some shots (like the one above). While we're not quite ready to say we're looking forward to more cow fur laptops, recent PC designs like the XPS One give us hope for the future of the beige box.
