Nokia begins its Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade rollout (video)
Talk of Microsoft finally deploying Windows Phone 7.8 has been building to a crescendo -- and we're glad to confirm it's more than just noise. The more customizable home and lock screens, Marketplace improvements and numerous under-the-hood upgrades are rolling out to all of Nokia's Windows Phone 7.5 devices, starting today and continuing through February. The company hasn't confirmed who goes first, although AT&T's Lumia 900 is believed to be part of the earliest wave. Other upgrades will depend on carrier timing, if you're using a locked phone, but the plan to push 7.8 is still good news for those who've wanted to keep their early Lumias as current as possible.

If you liked the look of the previously India-bound Lumia 510 but live on the other side of the world, there's now no need to fret. Nokia has just confirmed to Omio that they will be bringing their cheapest Windows Phone device to Blighty -- although there's no word yet on UK-specific pricing or willing carriers. The phone was priced up at $200 when announced, which will net you a humble 4-inch display and 800MHz processor. Retailer Phones 4U accidentally let the Windows Phone 7.8 slab slip out onto its coming soon page and although it's already been erased, we've added some screen-grab proof after the break.
Nokia Lumia 510 will skip Mango, land with Windows Phone 7.8 on board
Nokia's Lumia 510 was toting Mango when we saw it last, but it seems the affordable smartphone will be hitting Indian stores with Windows Phone 7.8 instead. The new iteration, which is starting to filter down to other Lumia handsets, boasts a smorgasbord of new goods including resizable home screen tiles and 20 accent colors, with Espoo likely to add a few Lumia-specific features such as an enhanced set of camera lenses and improved contact sharing. While the lure of something lurking between WP7.8 and the more child-friendly version 8 could spice up the deal further, budget-minded Indian customers coveting a newer Windows Phone operating system might not have to wait till the New Year.

The appearance of new Nokia firmware on NaviFirm is already enough to pique the interest of owners jonesing for an update, and this time there's especially strong reasons to get fired up: Windows Phone 7.8 upgrades for both the Lumia 510 and 800 have appeared on the servers. While their presence doesn't represent an official rollout, it supports notions that Nokia is edging closer to a deployment and gives those who live dangerously a chance to try 7.8 for themselves. We can't guarantee that phones will survive any unofficial transplants, but we'd love to hear from risk-takers who find something truly new in Microsoft's not-quite-8 release.

Squeezing in between Nokia's Asha series and the Lumia 610, the wallet-friendly Lumia 510 has been unveiled in India. The smartphone will be priced around $199 when it ships next month in India and China. It will eventually make its way to other Asia-Pacific countries and South America, but there's no news yet on any stateside availability. We did expect this Microsoft-powered device to turn up with version 7.8 of its mobile OS, but instead, there's Windows Phone 7.5 and the promise to an eventual upgrade. Confirming all those rumors we've been hearing, Nokia has officially taken the wraps off its latest budget smartphone, the Lumia 510 -- slotting it somewhere between the Asha range and the Lumia 610. With the notable exception of the 4-inch (480 x 800) screen, which is a tad larger than its slightly more accomplished Windows Phone sibling, the other specs are very much in line with its low-cost stance: there's a single 5-megapixel shooter at the back (no front-facer), a lowly 800MHz Qualcomm processor, 256MB RAM and 4GB of non-expandable storage. We'll be bringing you further details as the story unfolds. In terms of the OS, it'll ship with WP Mango but we're told it will be upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8 at some point in the future.

If a rolling stone gathers no moss, then the rumors surrounding Nokia's ultra-low-budget Lumia 510 have grown very mossy indeed. The folks over at GSMArena have snagged this glare-a-riffic snap of the prospective handset catching some rays in the finest of blurrycam traditions. Their tipster is also reiterating the specs we've seen before, talking up a Windows 7.8 handset with 256MB RAM, 800MHz CPU and 5-megapixel camera that's destined to stand between the Asha and Lumia 610 at the lower end of its smartphone pantheon. Nokia Lumia 510 put under the regulatory limelight, hints low-cost Windows Phone 7.8 on the way
Here's a contradiction in action: a Nokia phone that goes down a model number, but up in features. That's what we'll see if regulatory screenings and leaks surrounding the unreleased Lumia 510 are any indication. China's TENAA, the FCC and Indonesia's DG PosTel have all taken a look at the device ahead of time and point to a short, squat design that won't have the budget chic of the Lumia 610. However, if Baidu tips are correct, the 510 may be an ever-so-slight upgrade to its higher-digit predecessor with a larger 4-inch screen and a likely fast track to Windows Phone 7.8. Just don't anticipate more than the existing 800MHz Snapdragon, 256MB of RAM and 5-megapixel camera -- or a US release, for that matter. The FCC has only tested the Lumia 510 against American GSM bands, which hints that its 3G support is meant for China, Indonesia and other countries where low-cost smartphones matter most.
