London judge sentences defendant by phone

gavel

Talk about "phoning it in." When a defendant in a London bankruptcy case got stuck in traffic on his way to court, the judge — who wanted to avoid the costs associated with having to reschedule the case — decided to sentence him by phone. Judge Caroline Ludlow had Aftab Ahmed's lawyer call him on his cellphone and read him the sentence of 140 hours of community service and a fine of £750. "He pulled over and the judge sentenced him," said Ipswich Crown Court clerk Rachel Bonner. Good thing he pulled over, or he'd could have ended up facing even more charges.
