Bandai bundling DVD and UMD in the same package
You knew this was going to happen sooner or later: Bandai is going to be the first company to package a DVD along
with a UMD version of the same content
to watch on your PlayStation Portable while on the go.
It's only for the Japanese market, but they're selling a DVD with a few episodes of an anime series called
Eureka 7 bundled together with a UMD of those same episodes. You do have to pay extra for the
bundle with the UMD in it (about ¥1,260, or $11.72), but at least it is less than what it would cost to buy each disc
separately.
[Thanks, Hackthe DS]

OTOH, that $11.72 is a good chunk towards buying a Memory Stick of sufficient capacity to hold a good amount of video, especially something that lends itself well to compression like anime.
The UMD version will look better because it can use the full screen but it won't take too many DVD-only purchases before the Memory Stick is paid for in savings.
Anyone who buys a UMD belongs on the short bus.
actually, looking at the picture of that show, 11 bucks is a pretty good bargain when you consider that you're getting every single anime ever made.
cuby you belong on the short bus, you only get a few of the episodes (prolly 3 or 4) from one particular show. There are many anime shows out there and i highly doubt they would give you every one for 11 bucks. Put your helmet on and get in the bus!!
What is this, 4th grade?
#3: The Japanese dont believe in season sets. They believe in tiny theme DVDs.
KirbyMeister is right.
Also
Unlike US release of anime dvds, which usually has 3-5 eps a disk say going for $24-29.
The Japanese equivalent would be around the same price but about 1-2 eps a disk.
well, I'm not going to go calling UMD buyers names or anything, but I do have to agree it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy UMD movies, especialy for guys like myself who like to watch their movies with their wife. (Or at least have a few friends over.)
I can't remember the last time I watched a movie by myself. I must have been very lonely. (And I can't imagine ever watching a movie on a little screen IN PUBLIC by myself. Geez, I'd really be a loser then.)
KirbyMeister is wrong, actually.
They release the 1-2 episode disks first to make money off the video rental stores, then they release a compilation set later on if the show was popular. Often fans will buy it all over again to get the box set goodies.
There are exceptions, like FLCL, but even that will eventually be collected in a decent set, it just might take a few more years for Gainax to make it happen.
