Music Thing: Mark Wood Violins
For a while now, Music Thing has been featuring the gruesome excesses of lead guitarists, from Triple Neck Guitars
to extravagantly silly
guitar playing. This week
we discovered that violinists are also trying to get in on a piece of the action.
The main culprit is a guy called Mark Wood, who builds seven string Flying V-shaped electric violins with frets, and
sells them for $3,500. Noteworthy: he used to be in a band called Voodoo Violince (do you see what he's done there?).
You can even catch him playing a custom made violin shaped like a huge red hand pushing against his chest, apparently
attached to his neck with a leather dog collar. Incidentally, he's a close personal friend of Dee Snider from Twisted
Sister, and has also been on tour with Celine Dion. That's right, Celine Dion.

So, the rumors of the Dixie Chicks/Metallica offspring are true.
I don't believe it is possible that a picture of more awesomeness will ever be captured.
Hey fairy! The 80s called they want their spandex and "mental old hag"-hair back! Peace out!

Have a nice weekend.....

Oh crap, I forgot to put something at on-topic in my first comment. Let's try that again:
Despite the guy's anachronistic and freakishly gay-on appearance, the instruments themselves look finely crafted and quite innovative. As a musician, I approve. :)
I had his first album and it was pretty cool.. mostly instrumental if I remember.. pretty cool :) I believe this is the photo that was in the sleeve of the "casseette"
"I don't believe it is possible that a picture of more awesomeness will ever be captured."
And that comment will stand for all time as the perfect comment about said image.
xVariable,
Easy with the "Fairy/Gay" talk. Not nice of you at all. Please don't sucumb to the school yard level of calling anything you don't like gay.
Thank you.
Yup, that pic is from an old album... and i agree, ease up on the "gay" comments.
...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. OK. Fine. Is "queer" OK? Probably not. *chortle* :P
Not unless you'd be proud of wearing that label yourself.
From the maker of the keytar and piano key necktie comes...
...This ass-hat.
xVar,
Consider this your one and only warning. That kind of abusive language is not and will not be tolerated here. Not now, not ever. It is very easy for us to ban users, so don't make us resort to that kind of thing.
Best,
Ryan
I want one!
..I wonder if they have a fretless one....
Alright alright I'll shaddap. :-)
(/me wonders why post such an outdated picture if for no other reason than to elicit comment, and would it be any different if I told you I'm gay. *sigh* Oh well. I wouldn't want to be so desparate to post on EG after a ban that I'd be forced leave my modem unplugged for 12 hours (to get a new ip, of course) and switch to a new nick, or just use an anonymizng proxy or something. ;-))
I'll BEHAVE *mumble* *mumble* *mumble*
Why are you guys focusing on pix that were taken a million years ago??!?? Lest we forget, we were ALL dressing like you-know-what back in the '80's. Look at Robert Plant, Cinderella, all the hair bands of the time. That was the fashion. Sheesh. Wanna see Mark Wood NOW?? Visit his website - it's FILLED with current stuff:
http://www.markwoodmusic.com
The above pic is cute and all but why leave out the fact that it was taken in a different era??
That is so true!
In 2005, Mark and his strap-on-violin gang look in no way humorous:

And what could there be to laugh about this photo:

Of Mark and Dee Snider on the shoot of his rock opera?
And for sure there's no way you'd laugh at someone who has been on tour with Celine Dion:

Kind of looks like Simon Gallup from the Cure.
Fishes,
narco.
I've had the chance to work with Mark Wood and hear him play.... IMO, it was all a little gimmicky and the last thing us violinists resort to. I hate listening to electronic translations of great masterpieces that usually get messed up beyond repair.
For those going on about the "gay" comments.... way back in the 80's (when that picture was surely taken) if you looked like that, and played in a band (even violin) you were guaranteed hot chicks every single night. Sometimes more than one at a time. Don't knock what you do not understand.
And even though I can't stand Celine Dion... if this guy really got a gig with her band, he's one smoking musician. You don't get gigs like that when you suck.
Actually, I came of age in the 80s, so I am intimately familiar with what things were elike back then. You're sort of right. A lot of people DID refer to people that dressed like that as you-know-what. Only (pop)rock/metal stars and "unique" guys dressed like that. You'd have been more likely to be described as "white trash" if you dressed that way in those days, regardless of how many foolish, misguided *girls* (meaning, not women) you got to sleep with you.
Average people viewed dressing like that as a freak show and neither a norm nor an average, I can *assure* you.
ok i surfed the dudes site and watched the video. Technicaly he's awsome, but music sounds like ELO on speed. Plus why not just use a guitar, duh. btw Tom I'll have the lady in the band pic with the impressive violin rests. She looks very talented.
what is wrong with describing something as looking gay? I dont see anything wrong with that!
btw, very cool violin, I have two of Mark's violins, not the Viper though, its on my list
