The Cingular 2125 hits November 18th
Yeah, it's no secret that the HTC Tornado is coming to Cingular as the
HTC 2125, but a pic of the phone with Cingular branding
has just turned up over at Howard Forums, along with a launch date and final (but technically still unconfirmed)
pricing and specs. This bad boy is listed as running on Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Edition and having quad-band
GSM/GPRS/EDGE, a 200Mhz OMAP processor, 64MB of RAM, 64MB of flash ROM, a 2.2-inch, QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) LCD screen,
a 1.3 megapixel digital camera, Bluetooth 1.2, and a miniSD memory card slot. Not sure whether or not Cingular will be
offering the 2125 with WiFi, but there is an optional WiFi attachment which the 2125 pictured does appear to be rocking
(it's that hump-like antenna thingy on the top). WiFi or no WiFi, the 2125 is supposedly going to hit stores on
November 18th and sell for $349 without contract, $299 with a one-year agreement and $249 with a two-year
agreement.

Its great to see Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones in the United States during 2005!
SigmaMason @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I will be first in line for this, unless Nokia puts out a flash for all of the problems that are occuring for the 6682.

I wish they'd bring over the other C600, the one that actually looks good. I thought the trade-off of the non-styled version was having media buttons, but this doesn't even have those, what gives?
monal @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
no built in wifi...no sell
the early specs/pics had the wifi card in the battery compartment, this looks ugly if thats the wifi add on

It's Cingular that's what gives. It's the US with their lame view that we can't handle complex add-ons. Grrrr...why does everyone else in the world get stuff as designed and we get the retarded- lil'yellow school bus version?
WE'RE NOT DUMB US CARRIERS. PICK UP THE PACE OR LOSE THE RACE!

I'll wait for T-Mobile... they'll include the Wi-Fi and will have it for $200 by the time christmas comes around...

Over at Howardforums.com people are posting complaints about this device probably not having WiFi, if it ends up not being Wifi enabled.
What is the deal with WiFi on a smarthphone? What would one use it for? The web? Who would want to stare at a 2.2" screen for more than 2 or three minutes?
VoIP to avoid using plan minutes? Is that possible?
Timmay @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Hey number 5...
At the prices Cingular is charging for data i cannot blame them for wanting the Wifi...

media buttons were on the C550, not the C600. Here's a review with side-by-sides of the C500, C550, and C600.

I agree that the Wi-fi attachment is butt ugly, but the phone looks fine; that screen is huge for a cell phone form factor.
And ditto on Cingular's prices for data plans. It makes sense to buy this phone with no plan, unlock it, and then use it on T-Mobile.

Aside from the wifi "hump", this looks nearly identical to the Orange SPV C600.

anyone want to buy my unlocked smt5600?
this thing looks sweet.
Jjeff @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Timmay - $19.95/month for unlimited data? Yeah... it's killing me to have unlimited data on my SMT-5600. I only wish the 5600 was EDGE... GPRS is unnervingly slow.
Michael @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
I think the Wifi would be nice for checking email, AIM and stuff like that, not necessarily heavy web browsing.

On *almost* all of Cingular's smartphones (the SMT5600 and MPx220 are exceptions) MEdia Net plans are unavailable. You have to get a PDA Connect plan instead - the unlimited version is $39.95.
That being said, I assume that since the SMT5600 is available with unlimited MEdia Net, the 2125 would be as well.

I'm still not seeing this on the Cingular site and I stopped into the Cingular store today and they didn't seem to have any idea that this phone was coming anytime soon. Does anyone have any reliable info on when we might expect to see this avialable on Cingular's web site?
Nando @ Dec 19th 2005 12:20AM
Contacted Cingular today and the only smartphone they showed available was an iPaq, SMT-5600 was no longer available. Rep had not even heard of the 2125.
