The not-so-real Sony Style commercial
We're not sure what kind of crazy amounts of free time 18 year old Tyson Ibele had to whip up this demo Sony Style
commercial, but hot damn, if you're a fan of that transformer video where Shockwave breakdances, you're gonna love
this. (Yes, that's a Cyber-Shot flipping into a PSP at right.) No, Sony didn't pay this kid for his work, but if they
were smart they might. Wanna whip us up a couple Engadget videos while you're at it, Tyson?

That's bad ass!!!
Google Nazi @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
I wouldn't say too much free time because this is obviously going to help him get into a high price college or most colleges of his choice for almost nothing. That kid has mad skills, and Sony needs to pay that guy and air it on TV since it's that damn good.
Only recently starting 3D animation I am jeallous of this guy *laughs*.
Leitzge @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Damn, that's a nice commercial right there, better than anything I have seen from Sony. Yes, I agree totally that Sony should really pay this kid, he has a real career in front of him. I wonder what he does other than awesome commercials in his spare time?
Jjeff @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
*CyberShot, not PowerShot... don't sully Canon's name.
intheknow @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
I'm sure Sony will sue him for DRM violations.
peteremcc @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
heh, warming :D
Dave @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
They need to hire this guy
peteremcc @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
damn, just watched it...
looks better than all the current sony ads :D
roger @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
wasn't this made by make visual and not just some 18 year old kid?
jesusfreak @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
thats some warming there...on another note the ad really is awsome i think its sad that sony has no advertising talent that compares to this kid who has not gotten a degree or or even been to college...This is free advertising for sony and they should make the most of it

Read comments by ivanisavich on the Digg.com page for this story.
http://digg.com/technology/Homemade_Sony_commercial
He explains it all. He made it himself, but for his company. Sony did not pay for it, but if you know the goal of spec work, that might not be the came for long.
Meh, here is what he said at digg:
"Hi everyone!
Im Tyson Ibele.aka the dude that made this little animation.
Thanks Jonathan for giving me the heads up on this site! I had no idea it was posted here and was amazed at the feedback it got!
As for some more info on it.I should state that this was NOT made for sony. It was purely an in-house test we did here since we had some time and we wanted to see if we could pull off a cool transformations video (and I think we achieved our goal). So in that sense we could have picked ANY companys productsbut we picked Sony since theirs are probably the most recognizable.
As for details about how it was madethe forum post linked to here is where you can see some of the work-in-progress info/images/animations.
Thanks again everyone for commenting on it! The feedback here has been awesome!!"
Balazs @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Omg this is soo cool. I wish I culd create an ad like that. He could seriously make some money by selling it to Sony (but they would sue him first and then get it for free). I wonder how he did it??
epp_b @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
That movie was *INCREDIBLE*
This guy has talent.
Joshua Peters @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Wow... that was absolutely amazing.
craig @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
i can't even call it a criticism, but the one thing I noticed is that you can see where it switches from the 3d model to the actual product. but it almost makes for a cool effect.
that being said, the video is absolutely amazing. impressive by any standard.
surur @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Very fortuitous timing, with the whole geek rootkit furore, isn't it?

Hey, I actually posted an entry in my blog before Engadget did!
"Free time" is not the correct term. This work orginated on http://cgtalk.com, the one and only site for the CG community. The exact thread is here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=291108.
If you read it, he made it for MAKE, and like all other CG works, it will help him get into the industry if he isn't already. Otherwise it will build on his portfolio. There is nothing "free time" about this, it's real work.
dawggpie @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
... well that definitely does not subtract from his awesome work.
Jared Schwager @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
That looks awesome. I really like that guy's work.
Jason @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Awesome! Very attractive guy as well if I do say so myself...
JD @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
#15 its ALL 3d, there is no real product there.
for an 18yo its impressive, but check out his web site, the VFX wars entry he made was far and away more impressive.
its actually more impressive when you see its done in Max (insert catty comment here about 3d packages)

Dudes! That's waaaay sick for an ad!
SOOO THE BOMB!
</earlier teen mode style>
Reminds me of Citroen's C4 commercial:

only better! Now if only they'd of chosen Mac stuff... heh!
Great work Tyson Ibele!

Tyson Ibele @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Howdy!
I'm Tyson, the guy who made this spot (as noted above). Thanks Jose for letting me know about this site!
It's really cool to see that this little animation has made quite a few stops on different places around the net!
To clarify something....all of the objects you see in the ad are 3d...so there was no vid-->3d swapping as suggested by craig...but I'm glad you thought it all looked real :D
Anyways....thanks everyone for the feedback! It's been phenominal!
Tyson Ibele @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Hey everyone....
You might have noticed that my site is currently down. I believe this may be due to the fact that I've recieved so much traffic recently (because of this video)
Until it gets back up, you can see the video at my company's site (www.makevisual.com) using this link:
http://www.makevisual.com/movies/sonystyle1.html
battamer @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
404 not found.
Scott Stevenson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Tyson,
Your poor site!!! Seems to have succumbed to the quick rise in traffic generated by all of the links pointing to and folks downloading your video.
Perhaps there are some mirrors (or a fellow engadgeteer with server bandwidth and space can sport it)?
Cheers!
-Scott
matt t @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
i got 404'd :(
kiran @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
I'll agree with everyone:
better than all the other sony commercials out there.
VAIOchris @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Tyson,
Awesome work! I am going to have to show this to my friends at Sony Style here in Japan. Heck, I am going to show it to everyone at work today. Its a bummer that you did not include any VAIO computers. I will be sure though that all the guys at Sony marketing in Japan get a chance to check it out.
Cheers,
Chris
Tyson Ibele @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Hi scott...
heheh....yea a bit of a bulge in bandwidth transfer recently ;) Apparantly I sagged through 120gigs of transfer in under 8 hours...which translates to roughly 20,000 downloads of the video...
As noted above though, you can still use
http://www.makevisual.com/movies/sonystyle1.html
as a mirror.
Scott Stevenson @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Thanks Tyson,
I managed to grab the larger copy and save it before you took it down... but with that other link now everyone'll be able to check it out.
I checked out http://www.makevisuals.com/ 's other videos and the Butter one's pretty good too.
Look forward to seeing your future work... wouldn't be surprised if you get contacted by Sony or Apple (or any tech company for that matter). Best of fortune to you in your professional endeavors!
-Scott

Thanks Scott! I appreciate your help!

Oops....it's "www.makevisual.com" not "www.makevisuals.com" :)
JC @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Omg dude, that is absoluting amazing! Really, really, really good! Sony should seriously considering using this as one of their ads. It's tonnes better than the crappy Sony Centre ones we get over here in the UK with the annoying voiceover woman.
Cj @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Does anyone know the name of the song used in that commercial ?
Red_Munk @ Dec 19th 2005 12:55AM
Compliments Tyson. Job well done :).
Since i cant get tEH Vid.....& demand for it is only gonna INcrease......If its ok with you, maybe someone can create a .torrent & put it up on TPB or some other tracker/site.
Unless Sony sue's us all for Copyright infrigments :|.
*tEH HORROR!!!* :P.
keep up the good work ^ , ^
