PSP Firmware 2.6 supports RSS and WMA
Well, we kind of said it all in the headline this time, but props to Sony to listenin' to the people and not
dragging their feet too long on getting PSP firmware 2.6 out the door — it's on their site now
and ready for download. And apparently it supports WMA (though it doesn't support PlaysForSure, WMA9 Professional, and
WMA9 Lossless, d'oh!), RSS (we hear that includes enclosures, i.e. podcast time on your PSP!), and some other
incremental developments. We were a little perplexed by the addition of support for "Copyright-protected video data
provided by a content provider or other services,"
(MovieLink?
CinemaNow?
iTunes video?), but if you've got the skinny
on this, speak up!

Re encrypted video: doesn't Sony have its own TV download service? I think it may only be active in Japan at the moment, but I might be wrong.
iTunes video would be great, but Apple would never go for it. And Sony wouldn't either, I'm sure.
Assuming that Sony gets it together and starts their own download service in the US with a lot of content, this could be a great thing for PSP owners. The key way that the PSP beats the iPod in video (other than screen) is the wireless feature - PSP could really be pure video on demand, anywhere. Of course, my guess is that Apple is negotiating exclusive arrangements with the TV networks, so this could end up splitting the markets in a disasterous way.
ITunes video downloads on the PSP would rock! I'm sure it will never happen because the companies are competitors, but we can dream.
Lost certainly would look great on the PSP's larger screen. They would have to start distributing content in widescreen :D
Wow, these updates add so much more content to the psp, making it an amazing tool for the average Tech-geek, to the uber Rich tech-junkie.....its just too bad im never gonna upgrade, I feel that homebrew apps out-wiegh the additions they have added to the psp so far.
Maybe when some great games come out, im lloking forward to Monster Hunter, and several other Capcom titles they are releasing, Maybe then i will upgrade my firmware.
Copy-Protected movie content is a way saying they have support for buying movies when the industry finds a way to sell it in some other way other than using iTunes.
Which will never, ever, happen. Morons.
Woohoo, WMA support! Hurray to Sony for actually listening to their customers.
Does this mean their other DAPs will start supporting WMA too?
C'mon Sony! How about adding support for streaming audio and video. Orb + PSP = should be a no brainer.
Dudes, games are now secondary on the PSP! lol
I would rather prefer more work on the UI of the PSP. Don´t get me wrong I love the fact that you can add more content to your PSP, but sync that content is not that easy if you compare it with the iPod.
I'm assuming the copy protected video blurb is in regards to the Tivo to PSP functionality. I can't confirm as I'm not going to pay additionally so Tivo can transcode instead of doing it myself. But just a thought.
I'm happy with the fact Sony is becoming more attentive to upgrades and adding functionality that could have been there all along, but Sony -- Let's see some decent games! I'm already buying my second DS and have come THIS |-| close to selling the PSP on eBay. So far it has not been a wise investment, even if you are playing "homebrew".
Sadly, I think they are on target marketing it as a PMP, rather than a gaming machine. Because a gaming machine it isn't. Grand Theft Auto is fine, but buggy. I use it mostly to surf the internet while lounging around the house. Actually, it's technically used most as a paperweight on my desk while I'm playing my DS.
This update COULD have made the PSP the ultimate device for podcast listeners. I'd love it if I could go to a hotspot and have the PSP download the mp3s from my favourite RSS feeds, BUT IT DOESN'T! If you read the details all you can do is STREAM the audio - totally useless for people who want to listen on the move, like I do on my commute.
Re encrypted video is for the portable TV site operated by so-net (Sony's broadband company in Japan). Previously we need to use PC to download content to MS Duo to play in PSP. This upgrade allow user to download directly from PSP and the content will be stored on MS Duo. This is a paid video service like rental shop because the content will expire in certain time. There are some free download as well as paid video starting from 105 yen.
The website is in Japanese:
http://www.p-tv.jp/
Be careful. This upgrade may just be a way for Sony to put a rootkit on your PSP ;-)
i may be a loyal sony fan, with a lcd monitor, walkman bean, dsc-t5, and what not, but that root kit seriously pisses me off
If only they'd make it be a videocatch machine. Download videos overnight (to your bigger memory stick).. watch them on that beautiful screen. How perfect would that be?
"Copy-Protected movie content is a way saying they have support for buying movies when the industry finds a way to sell it in some other way other than using iTunes.

Well, there are multiple ways that've came out to sell them. The problem of course lies in that the methods have been so terrible so far that consumers have wisely stayed the hell away.

Actually someone did. Videora and PSPVideo9
http://www.videora.com/en-us/
Does exactly what you described.
#13 Try PSPvideo 9 to do so. I use it to convert my films or TV shows to mp4 format and autmatically store it on my PSP. All I have to do is queue the jobs and then in the morning grab my PSP and watch what ever I want on that gorgeous screen during my commute.
The PSP seems to always be one step away from greatness, due mainly to the limitations in the software, not the hardware. Some things that I would love to have are:
1. Native Divx, XVID, and WMV playback
2. Ability to download podcats using WiFi
3. Ability to browse windows shares (for movie transfers)
Well I used my psp to rip MP3's off of download sites and was able to listen to them without having to use my usb cable, once you find an mp3 it automatically saves in the music folder :)
It's about time they got wma support but what about flash and streamload format?! Come on Sony you can do it!
ok, so im a newbee and the only reason i really bought this piece of crap (11/24/05)was to put my own freakin movies that i converted myself (on a bootleg version of xilisoft) as well as downloaded games (from a bittorrent) onto my memory stick and successfully play them, and the first thing i do is upgrade to 2.6... am i screwed or what??
by the by, my email is batman_247@hotmail.com (shut up, i made this email in 9th grade) if anyone has any suggestion or questions on how to find free (bootleg) stuff... i also have a myspace...
Davie ... HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAA........ I'm still 1.50 and having a blast with it. Playing all my favourite SNES, Genesis games, and using PSPRadio to stream Radio at work and school since they give free Wifi. SWWEEEEET!!!
i'll take that as a yes:[
psp 2.1 has just landed on my doorstep....it should have been a 2.0 version...q. sell it or wait for the cheat?? help, how long b4 the cheat comes out????
ace
Davie,
Try to down grade back to ver 1.5 There's a way to do it, some fanboy some where has written about it. Look around, start with PSPFanboy.com
Personally, I hate my PSP -- HATE IT! $289.00 not well spent. Mine still has ver 1.0 on it, and sits in the dresser, while I'm playing games on my DS. I'll love my DS, it has fun and interesting games to play -- which is why I bought it.
i kno this is kinda off-topic but my computer is crap right now. can someone send me a killzone direct feed video in psp mp4 format to jakmanxxx@yahoo.com thx
Hey, I'm am currently thinking about getting a psp. But the one thing I do not wanna do is buy games. Is a one gig memory stick enough for some homebrew games and for my game files? And by the way, yes I do kno how to get my firmware back to 1.5
I am having real trouble getting music onto mmy psp. I have got version 2.60, a usb cable. I can put music onto my psp, it just says on the psp that it is 00:00 seconds. I have converted my wma to mp3 but that doesn't work either. PLEASE HELP ME!
i really need some help. i want to have rss feeds on my psp. so i find one, save it on the memory stick, bla bla bla. when i try to open up the feed all i get is "there is no item". I am probably doing something blatently wrong but ill be darned if i can get the stuff to work.
