Acer's decked Yonah TravelMate 8200
Acer is coming to
the Yonah party fully equipped. Their new TravelMate 8200 has an Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz processor fresh
from the bunny people, 2GB of GDDR3 memory, ATI's X1600 512MB Radeon, built-in VOIP (whatever that entails), a/b/g
WiFi, dual layer DVD burning, and a rotating 1.3 megapixel cam built into the carbon fiber-clad 15.4-inch screen. It
seems like they could've crammed a few more pixels than the WXGA resolution while they were busy stuffing in all the
rest, and you can't quite call this an ultra-light at 6.6 pounds, but we like where this Yonah powered ship is headed.

Just one thing: this doesn't have 2GB of GDDR3 ram. The graphics card has GDDR3 ram.
This laptop has 2GB RAM 533/677 -- which is DDR2.
I read somewhere that the card you see next to the laptop is a bluetooth voip phone. I presume it slides into the case and charges when not in use....
"you can't quite call this an ultra-light at 6.6 pounds, but we like where this Yonah powered ship is headed."
Well, it's not ultra light, but i don't think the Yonah Dual Core High-Voltage 2Ghz+ T2500/T2600 versions are intended for the use in ultra portables, neither the ATI X1600..
That, or Acer has made a really poor job making this notebook..
Why? It has a six hour battery, yes, but the battery is of 87w and 7800mAH!!!!
That nearly doubles the 45w power adapter of the iBook, or de 65w one of the PowerBook...
I'm concerned that we won't see 2Ghz+ version in a PowerBook.. (perhaps in the 17" model) Looks like the 15" powerbook and smaller models will have to use the low-voltage dual core L2300 & L2400 versions of Yonah at 1,5Ghz & 1,66Ghz respectively...
WXGA? Will the nightmare never end??
Just tell us the pixel resultion, you know, in numbers.
Who could've imagined the endless stream of meaningless GA acronyms? The horror, the horror...
-Pie
WXGA = 1366 x 768
just think of it as good ole XGA, but wider. kind of stingy on a 15.4" - heck my 14" thinkpad has higher resolution!
"just think of it as good ole XGA, but wider. kind of stingy on a 15.4" - heck my 14" thinkpad has higher resolution!"
And the 15,2" PowerBook also, 1440 x 960...
I don't know why Acer equipped this machine with the lastest graphics from ATI to later put a screen with low pixel resolution..
I suppose that at least it will have a dual link DVI port to drive that 30" from Apple or Dell...
for most people i think they could use this machine as a desktop replacement let alone an ultralight portable. looking at the specs there are very few notebooks on the market with specs even close if any at all.
@brandon
Well, this Acer notebook isn't on the market now... It isn't shipping..
LG and Dell have also announced Yonah laptops before Acer..
But Announcing and Shipping are two different things ;)
So we will have to wait and look when the first Dual Core Yonah notebook ships, it will be a really big improvement over any notebook ;)
And if you exclude the processor and graphics chip from the specs, the rest isn't impressive, there are faster hard drives, better screens, lower weight and longer batteries in other notebooks.. And we don't even know yet the price of this machine..
Note to Engadget: Looks like the original article: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2697 have been updated, clarifying that the X1600 doesn't have 512mb of dedicated video memory, instead it has 256mb dedicated and another 256 shared from main memory...
4 years later and still nothing beats my dell inspiron 15" at 1600x1200. acer was so close...
@kking
Well, the Dell latitude D810 beats it :P
Anyway, 1920x1200 pixels on a 15" screen is too high without an operating system with support for scalable graphics & fonts..
Weird on the WXGA since the 8100's were 1680x1050. Interesting "downgrade" for the 8200.
@coolkamio
i was referring to 4:3 screens as the inspiron i use is the 8200, but yeah i guess D810 does beat it because it has a widescreen aspect ratio.
the point is, i want those acer specs with one of dells ultrasharp screens wide or regular. :)
Most Acer WXGAs use 1280x800, though I think the resolution won't be so low on this one.
On the 543club.net forum from where the pictures and specs are coming, it is now written that the screen resolution is WSXGA+ (1680x1050) and I would believe this more than the WXGA...
I think Acer did a great job with this desktop replacement (who said ultraportable!? :-s ), high end specs and great design (carbon fiber cover like on the Ferrari4000! :) )
Its specs sounds really good..
Hope more laptops like this to arrive.
Everything looks nice except the screen. Cmon, which 2gb of memory, can't you splurge a little bit and put in a WSXGA?
Cool. This MIGHT run Vista with all the bells and whistles enabled. :-P
Wonder how much this baby will cost?
The TM 8200 screen has a resolution of 1680 x 1050 (WSXGA+). It's The Same screen as the TM 8100 series has. and the price will be about $2500,-. I'd like to know if it's a crystalbright screen or not.
Just before Christmas I was hunting down the perfect laptop. I looked at the Amillo 4438G partly because it has dual raid drives and a 17" 1920x1200 screen.
I think I will wait until the next batch of dual core laptops comes out with a screen of that size and resolution. My dream laptop has almost arrived.
Nick.
