Dell's 3007WFP gets a price: $2199
We gotta admit, we were stoked to learn this morning that Dell finally announced a price for their hot new 3007WFP, and then promptly made a mite bit disappointed upon finding out it's going to sell for $2,199 -- still a couple hundred bucks shy of Apple's mammoth $2,500 30-inch Cinema Display, but we were hoping it'd stay in the sub $2,100 range. Ah well, not like it matters a whole helluvalot, we're all probably going to buy us three or more apiece as soon as they start shipping, which their site says should be in "5-7 days."

it is tempting...too bad i don't have a graphics card to support it.
Brian Short @ Jan 5th 2006 11:24AM
I'll never buy a monitor with HDCP built in.
pedro @ Jan 5th 2006 11:25AM
Dell runs crazy price breaks however. The 24" Dell display which listed for $1200 (I think), frequently sold for $850, so it will likely be the case that we'll be able to get these for under 2k before too long.
havanahjoe @ Jan 5th 2006 11:29AM
I agree with #1. Same drawback as the Apple 30", dual link DVI video cards are rare. And if you're a gamer, even worse. Are there any performance video cards with dual link DVI available now? Last time I checked you had to go with Quadro or FireGL.
havanahjoe @ Jan 5th 2006 11:34AM
Ok apparently there is one video card on the market now:
Dell 30 wide flat panel requires the 256MB Nvidia GeForce 7800GTX graphics card.
michael @ Jan 5th 2006 11:42AM
Brian;
I respect your principled stand on copy protection, but most of us just want the thing to work and in todays environment that means that HDCP is a must.
vidGuy @ Jan 5th 2006 11:49AM
All I can say is wow. That thing dwarfs the XPS, which itself is a monster of a tower. Too bad I won't have the card or the cash to buy something like this for quite some time.
Metasheep @ Jan 5th 2006 11:53AM
The 7800GTX 256MB has one dual link DVI port, the 512MB version has 2. There's an eVGA 6600GT card that has a dual link DVI port if you don't want the expense of a high end card.

I agree with you when it comes to the "average consumer", but Brian has a good point here. If you don't buy it, it won't go anywhere. Really.
At least he can buy a 24" w/o restrictions.
Or don't buy Dell.
A Hozer @ Jan 5th 2006 11:55AM
Dell.ca has the 30" for $1999.00 CDN. Thats like $199.00 US!
Seriously though, Dell is screwing its own.
idesign @ Jan 5th 2006 11:58AM
man something is messed with the comment system, tried to post this at least 40 minutes ago.
Something is odd. The Dell.ca site list this thing at $1999.00 CAN. Anyone know what's up with that?
boe @ Jan 5th 2006 12:01PM
Any word on the specs for the 2407FPW?
Nando @ Jan 5th 2006 12:03PM
There are several cards now that support dual DVI-D outputs with HDCP on both. The 6x00 and 7800 cards support it, just make sure you have the proper power supply for them or you will be sorry.
ATI also supports dual DVI-D on the X1800 and I believe the X8x0 also.
I just got a 7800GT for ~$330 to run my 37" 1920x1080 LCD and it works like a champ having that with the 19" Samsung both running off the DVI.
idesign @ Jan 5th 2006 12:12PM
The 9600 pro pc/mac card from ATI has dual-link DVI and 256mb ram (which I run on my upgraded 1.8 G4 Quicksilver). Not the best gaming card, but it can drive that display.
brandon @ Jan 5th 2006 12:15PM
@vidGuy
Not only does it dwarf the XPS, look how small the mouse looks.
nick @ Jan 5th 2006 12:15PM
This price is really horrible. And the video is equally sad. 700 bucks for the dell one and even more for an "aftermarket". I guess it's back to 4 2001FPs instead. It's just to bad.
Brian Short @ Jan 5th 2006 12:23PM
HDCP isn't a must if we don't buy it.
There are other options out there for large monitors that don't act as digital nannies. If you're comfortable with a computing environment where any content company can shut off your access to content that you paid for, then good on you.
I won't be joing in their little reindeer games.
DaMaDo @ Jan 5th 2006 12:37PM
I have the apple 30 inch running on a 7800GTX and it works perfectly. I think the regular 7800GT will work too and honestly the performance b/t the GT and GTX is unnoticable (I have a GT on another computer). The 7800 runs the 30 inch at 2560x1600 really well in World of Warcraft and Everquet 2. No problems. Highly recommend this Dell. Had they both been out I'd have gone with the Dell just for the contrast ratio and brightness improvements...well and the 11ms response too. The apple is just gorgeous tho hehe. Got mine for $2199 with the student discount. (normally $200 off but you get an extra $100 off if you get it in the store)
canosso @ Jan 5th 2006 12:44PM
@ #3:
Dell is selling the 2405 cheap because they become outdated. Samsung has a new 24" panel with better specs:

360Capture @ Jan 5th 2006 12:50PM
I wonder if they are going to release new models for the 24".
Aaron @ Jan 5th 2006 12:52PM
Now that I have a little money, will the 20" monitors please get to being as cheap as they were a year ago?
babalukas @ Jan 5th 2006 1:16PM
As far as the price is concerned, Dell's price on their webpage also includes some 3 year advance exhange service. Maybe the monitor will retail for $1999 if you are not a super early adopter?
master_of_fm @ Jan 5th 2006 1:34PM
Ati has stated that all x1000 series cards except for the x1300 will support dual-link dvi, Nvidia on the other hand has tried to limit dual-link to Quadro cards, but this is funny because my PNY 7800GT says it supports dual-link. I believe that most of the new cards have dual tdms as part of the platform design and that the individual card manufacturers can decide wether to make a card dual-link or not
master_of_fm @ Jan 5th 2006 1:41PM
i just looked at the evga website and both the 7800GTX and 7800GT max out at 1600x1200 digital, so if you are going for a big widescreen flat panel check manfacturers website and dont assume all cards have the same output capabilities
babalukas @ Jan 5th 2006 2:09PM
Actually that is EVGAs fault. If you click their tech pdf for these models it does say one dual link TDMS both for GT and GTX.
Don Lapre @ Jan 5th 2006 3:12PM
There is no reason not to get HDMI. All it does is make sure you arn't outputting an HD signal from your video card to some kind of capture device.
If you dont have HDMI you will only be able to watch protected HD content in 480p (dvd resolution).
Donovan @ Jan 5th 2006 3:30PM
Ok, so it's available for order through dell.ca for $1999 CDN. Sweet.
Am I reading that right?
http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/monitor_3007wfp?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs#tn1
Wonder what the compatibility requirements will be like with Macs
YacozA @ Jan 5th 2006 4:49PM
YES. in canada they are 1999 CND
i found that to be rather strange..... the fact that the can. dollar is still 85cents yet its 200$ cheaper....
i wonder if its a mistake... or if their giving ppl in canada a break because we don't get as many discounts as the americans do from dell direct
Momo-san @ Jan 5th 2006 6:24PM
The one in Canada has a 1-year warranty, but the US one comes with 3-years (for some legal reason). That should cover a couple hundred dollars difference.
NathanLaan @ Jan 5th 2006 7:59PM
Strangly enough, the 3007WFP is priced at $1999.99 CAD, which is $1734.44 USD according to the current conversion rate. That's a pretty sweet discount, especially considering the 30" Apple Cinema Display is priced at $2999.99 CAD (2601.67 USD) here. That's a $1000 less in CAD funds, and almost the same in USD funds.
MP @ Jan 5th 2006 10:05PM
Lets find a cheaper alternative... Wouldn't two 19" Dell screens or 2 20" dellscreens which you could get for less than $400 a piece a better deal. Can't you use a vga to component input to hook up devices that use component video (like Xbox or DVD players) to those 19" and 20" dell screens?
Optimus Rhyme @ Jan 5th 2006 10:36PM
I'm still just looking for the 2407 (24") personally.
Larry @ Jan 6th 2006 11:18AM
And the march goes on
Leo @ Jan 6th 2006 2:24PM
Has anyone else noticed how much this monitor LACKS?
--> only one computer input??? WTF!
Compared to their 2405FPW, this this is LACKING on features (no dual PC inputs, no component inputs, no PIP, etc). Err, what a bummer.
Leo @ Jan 6th 2006 2:25PM

L'Emmerdeur @ Jan 6th 2006 4:35PM
I currently have 2 PCs and a TWC DVR box hooked up to my 2001FP, and still have the component inputs available. Why in God's name would they cripple such a monitor with only one PC input? Do these product design types really hate their jobs that much? You get these Holy Grail tech products that seem to have it all, then THIS happens.
Shall I mention... screen rez on the Archos AV700?
Or... VZW V3C RAZR with no option for tethering a PocketPC using their EVDO network?
They hold perfection under our noses, and then yank it away with a maniacal laugh.
Idiots. My money stays in my pocket. Earn it.
