We got the high-level from Samsung
at the press event, but now we've got the
skinny on those DirecTV set-top boxes that were briefly mentioned. Turns out that the devil's in the details as Samsung
announced a DirecTV receiver with an integrated 10.2-inch screen. Surprise! These little guys are dubbed the
"DIRECTV Fliptops" and they're exclusive to Sammy. Integrated 10-watt speaker pop out the audio for any of
250-odd channels you can see on the three-day Electronic Programming Guide. Watch for the little flippers in March for
$499 list.
Is this like recieve>record>watch or does it have a built in receiver that you have to face towards 110 degrees south (or what ever it is) and can get 250 channels anywhere?
best invention ever
i wonder if they will have DVR recording available?
Do all of these new DTV products at CES mean that we aren't getting MPEG4 from them in the first quarter like we've been told?
Who would buy it? Where would you put it?
I think it requires a coax connection to a satellite.... which I think makes this a pretty big waste of money. I mean, why not just get a wireless TV. You can hook it into your (fuller featured) DirecTivo, along with your DVD player and whatever else you watch. The screen is small, the device is huge for a 10" lcd, the speakers suck, and you have to have a satellite-driven coax cable to plug it into. I think this is almost the same as no news... completely silly.
Those things would be perfect if they were able to work in vehicles. Can you say, " Pimp my ride ! "
Ummm.. they left out the part about needing a 2ft diameter dish antenna wherever your drag this thing around. Frankly, I'm missing the "portable" part of this being portable. It's either a 10" LCD TV with integrated DTV, or a DTV receiver with integrated 10" LCD monitor. The portable claim is definately a stretch.
The press release says it can also receive "up to 72 channels of XM Satellite Radio audio channels."
In all fairness, Samsung arnt the ones saying its portable, Engadget are. The Samsung press release says its a receiver with integrated display, which you could install say under a kitchen cabinet.
