The 2005 Engadget Awards: Nominate the Comeback of the Year

Nominating is easy. Just leave a comment as you normally would with what you're nominating for this category (remember, comments must be validated!). You don’t have to include your reasons for nominating it or any of that stuff, just leaving the name is fine.
Please limit your nominations only to related "comebacks" that were made in 2005.
Also, things only need to be nominated once to be in the running, so if you’re planning on suggesting something, please make a quick scan to see if someone’s already beat you to it (i.e., please don't nominate anything more than once!). Thanks!

I nominate TiVo for comeback of the year.
The return of Toshiba's fantastic Libretto!! They really made it the best possible ultraportable of 2005; maybe they'll make a dualcore one this year, sure hope so ...
More on the business end of things, but HP's ouster of Carly Fiorina seemed to reinvigorate the company.
Nintendo DS (Software)
Apple!!!! well i dono have they ever gotten far enough to cal it a comeback, so is it more like a comming up?
Apple Stock - from $35 to $85/share in 1 year!
Cox Communications, for upping bandwidth, and activating the serial port and front inputs on the Explorer 8300.
I nominate AOL. They seem to be bouncing back from the brink of stupidity quite nicely. Also Live8 was awesome.
Apple!!! Hot iMacs and Quad G5s... and the coolest Software available! And the switch to intel being so smooth!
NIntendo DS
IPOD - yeah the ipod's been around for a while, but they came back in a big way by adding video this year. still love my psp better in terms of quality, but the content for the ipod just keeps getting better and better.

PSP. In the beginning it was crippled but now it's definitely the top portable multi-media device.
Without a doubt the Nintendo DS as comeback of the year.
The reason for this is that it had compelling software coming out consistently all year and for all of us that have one can (myself included) cannot deny that it has taken up the most of our time in the past couple of months.
In '04 it was only out for for a couple of weeks so of course it wasn't going to have that good of a year, you had to give it time and it has payed off.
Rome wasn't built in a day and success in the video game isn't either.
Nintendo DS...hands down.
I nominate Motorola (can someone say RAZR?). Apple has been on an upswing since a few years back so that's not really a "comeback" so to speak. Nintendo DS is a good competitor as well but iPod's not a comeback since there's no valleys in their sales graph.
Motorola. They were in the dumps with all their crap phones, but with the Razr taking off this year, they're back at the top.
Moto RAZR coming back from the StarTac, just beats the DS which is also impressively creative
Nintendo DS.
Apple all the way!
Motorola with the razr v3
Apple
Motorola.. with the RAZR.
Even though the phone is useless (and i would never buy it) they're still the comeback player of their year. market share says it all.
DS
Nintendo with the DS
Nintendo DS
I nominate HD-DVD for comback of the year.
It all looked set for BlueRay to win hands down, all of HD-DVD's supporters either switched or adopted both, but now with huge support from Microsoft and some other companies, it looks to be making a nice comeback.

Palm without a doubt.
Everyone thought Palm was dead. With the 650 Treo as the reigning champ, then they came out with the Windows Mobile 700w. They have turned a dying company around. Now everyone wants to switch to Verizon to get it.
would say Motorola with the razr.
I'd say the Sony Walkman range. From making players as restricted as concentration camps to finally listening to what people want and not forcing ATRAC down everyones throats and killing Sonicstage with an unmarked grave. Even adding WMA too!!
Its not getting back to its glory days, but its a good start at least to some exciting and sexually attractive music players from Sony again.
DEfinietly the Nintendo DS because of nintendo wi-fi connection
Apple!!!
the IPOD VIDEO
Just when the others thought they could nip Apple in the butt in the MP3 market... whoa!
Ok ppl if something has already been mentioned DONT REPOST IT...READ THE DIRECTIONS...on a similar note hd-dvd made one kick ass come back!
Learn to read the rules people. I agree with Nitendo DS but since it's already nominated I guess I don't need to nominate it!
Apple
Google (stock)
Netflix
not just the DS but nintendo is the best comeback period. At begining of '05 they really were dangerously close to true obscurity and then, like it or not, the ds trounces the uber handheld psp and the revolution controller puts the company on everyones lips with speculation and conjecture. Sure, this generates a love/hate atmosphere, but people are talking about it and actually caring. Wheras lots of people even the hardcore were looking ready to give up. Kudos to the big "N" they've proven that playing smart rather than hard can actually get you somewhere.
As for the several naming the IPOD for being best comeback. WTF? Where did the IPOD comeback from? It rules its category(85% market share!)and there is no significant sign of that faltering. You can't "comeback" until you've actually left. I think that Steve Jobs would take issue with that level of fanboyism.
Apple - from years away from the limelight, the iPod and iTunes has kicked Apple to the forefront of consumer midset, taking 85% of the download market, and become one of the most tightly watched companies in the marketplace.
Apple
#36 has a good point....The Apple iPod has to die/almost die before it can be nominated....And Apple iPods in general came out a while ago....also discluding it from the "Of The Year" area....And no, you can't say Apple iPod Video....because, again, it would've had to of died, and come back or recovered Apple from the brink....
I say Palm....with their new 700w, they stand a chance against all the new PDA/Smartphone technologies
Nintendo.
In the last generation of consoles, the PS2 and Xbox were tough competitors to face off against. Both had far superior hardware and more versatility in what could be done with them. While the Gamecube was far from a failure, it wasn't a complete success for lack of third-party support and a more mature image. The unveiling of the Revolution, it's capabilities and services, and it's outrageously fun looking controller, Nintendo has risen from the ashes once again, ready to take on the other consoles later this year.
Just Nintendo in general. Everyone thought the PSP would be the end of Nintendo, because the handheld market was their only real strong point. The handheld surge for Nintendo has increased the Nintendo brand among Japanese gamers especially, and even the GameCube has become a more acceptable item. Technically it was 2004 when the DS launched, but it did sell over 1 million units in three weeks at the very end of 2005, forcing it to sell out.
That alone makes Nintendo the biggest "out of the blue" comeback in a long time. Of course, anyone with half a brain would know the PSP never stood a chance agains the sheer gaming power of the DS.
Motorola ROKR E2 (maybe it is 2006 comeback from the disappointing E1.. but anyways, that my nomination)
Nikon Coolpix S4 - comeback swivel digicam
Nintendo DS, the games are getting better and much more creative.
nintendo ds
for sure ,its the IPOD Video.out of all the competition for mp3 players the IPOD Video is simply superb.with remote control features. and it rocks with is accesories.....
