The 2005 Engadget Awards: Nominate the Portable Audio Device of the Year

Nominating is easy. Just leave a comment as you normally would with what you're nominating for this category (remember, comments must be validated!). You don’t have to include your reasons for nominating it or any of that stuff, just leaving the name is fine.
Limit your nominations only to devices that were introduced and sold for the first time in 2005 (which means no concept devices or prototypes, though we will allow updated versions of previous products).
Also, products only need to be nominated once to be in the running, so if you’re planning on suggesting something, please make a quick scan to see if someone’s already beat you to it (i.e., please don't nominate anything more than once!). Thanks!

my nomination for portable audio is the 5th Generation apple iPod. 47 million units, same incredible interface, video. for listening to music it can't be beat.

The iRiver U10. A new kind of interface in a small form factor that thumbs its nose at price points. It has FM, a mic, flash games, video, photo viewing, and a sharp full color screen.

i think you cant really choose one portable audio, so i would choose "every player exept ipod", why? because all that the ipod has change is in size and the abillty to play video files, while other player had those fonctions long time ago...
ranron @ Jan 13th 2006 10:14PM
It all depends on how do we define portable. I would say the Sony VAIO X505 laptop. 0.5-in thick and has speakers.

Like Time Magazine, I chose the Sony PSP. Plays my music, movies, and my games. Also, Sony sold the LocationFree for a limited time sale for $549cdn, so I got one and loved how I connected my PSP to it so I can watch TV whenever I hit a Hot Spot. UMDs may be over priced, well so are DVDs compared to FREE downloads from Torrents. At least I know my UMDs, incased in a somewhat plastic housing, have a higher chance of surviving from the horrors of my nephews getting their hands on it and playing with it.

In terms of cultural impact, it's pretty obvious (in fact, it's obvious enough that I don't even need to mention the product's name).
In terms of features and actual hype-independent coolness, it has to be the iAudio X5L.
Erix @ Jan 15th 2006 6:33PM
