Acer adds EDGE/HSDPA to Core Duo laptops
Sony may have a GPRS/EDGE-equipped
laptop, and Lenovo may have one with built in
HSDPA, but Acer may be able to claim the crown as the first company to bundle wireless cellular services on a Core
Duo-based model. The company's new TravelMate 4260 and Aspire 5650 series laptops include built-in three-band GPRS/EDGE
capabilities, and are upgradeable to HSDPA as the service is rolled out. Of course, you'll still need a service contract
to actually use the wireless functions, but at least you won't have to sacrifice a PC Card slot to do it. [Via Pocket Lint]

danger, will robinson...
Honestly, every Acer product we have bought has had problems. Their monitors, LCDs and laptops have all been poor quality.
Needless to say, we don't buy Acer anymore.

And everything Sony has ever made is terrible. And Maxtor makes the best drives.
Every expensive product I've bought from Sony has died within a month of the warranty being up.
I've never had a Maxtor drive fail on me.
These are my personal experiences, your mileage may vary.
I was a loyal Toshiba laptop user for years, but Acer had the only laptop out there with the bundled features I wanted at the time. It has been a solid, excellent laptop and I will now look to Acer (if I can't dual boot XP and OSX on the new Intel Apple's) for my next laptop.

Is there a reason why a sofware programmable radio cannot be installed in a computer?
If I understand what that is, you should be able to have a wireless card in your laptop that can access GSM, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA, WCDMA, 3G, HSDPA, EVDO, UMTS, WiMax or any other network acronyms we get thrown our way in the next five years simply by reprogramming the radio chip in the card.
Somebody please explain why this fantasy is not realistic.

How does this work?
Will it work with T-Mobile and Cingular?
You just put your SIM card in there?

The VAIO SZ also has Core Duo and integrated GPRS/EDGE, since the day Core Duo launched.
