Onkyo BR-NX8, the 80GB DLNA stereo
DLNA (Digital Living Networking Alliance) compliance
hasn't really hit the US in full force yet, but it's becoming all the rage overseas, and is one of the many interesting
features Onkyo's BR-NX8 amp, also including support for AnyMusic
service, an 80GB internal hard drive, Ethernet, a USB port (presumably for playing off mass-storage compliant devices),
CD, and, uh, and MiniDisc (hey, it's still kinda big in Japan, we'll let it slide). And, of course, the BR-NX8
DLNA-compliant, it can apparently do fun things like stream audio on your network to other DLNA devices.

It's interesting to see all the stereo components that are coming out these days incorporating MP3 players, networks, internet access, etc. But all one really needs is a simple receiver, an Apple computer and Apple iTunes and you have all those features and more.

Shut up #1. You are embarrassing yourself.

I agree with #2.

#1's idea is ok, if you want to be a slave to Apple's DRM, dont mind having your computer running whenever you want to listen to music and dont mind having cables running hither-tither and yon. Me personally, I'm shifting from the Tunes-on-the-Mac model to the Squeezebox, because my data server has more than enough harddrive and is already on 24-7, plus it lives in the closet behind my rack. I can now use a remote control, rather than having to either buy a new mac with frontrow (yeech). Plus I am not tied to the limitations of Apple's sharing methods, which means I can allow access to the Squeeze from say work, and listen to my stuff at work, while Apple a while ago squashed file sharing down to a single subnet (the rats, my wifi is a different subnet for security)

This is what the new iPod BoomBox will be like. Interface on the screen = Front Row, nav will be the Apple Remote Control. It'll stream and store from iTunes. w00t!

Well, if you're recording, MD is still a decent format. I record and archive meetings on MD. Problem is, it looks like this isn't a Hi-MD player/recorder, so it's already behind in that department.

Wow...that's a Memory Stick Duo slot on the front. Anyone also notice how the background of the display looks like the Apple screensaver?
dwight @ Feb 13th 2006 11:49AM
Just because you love Apple, doesn't mean everyone wants the shiny white boxes in their living room.

That's pretty interesting--there's a memory stick duo slot. Also, the background for the display looks like Apple's screensaver. It would be very nice if Apple introduced an iPod savvy unit like this.

The problem with the Mac is that - if you want just 1 computer in your house and you want to use it for media and everything else - like say, keeping track of your physical training or synching your smart phone - you are better off with a PC because you know all the software that comes with all of your gadgets will run on it.

I haven't looked at the official site, but whats the ethernet for? CDDB or streaming? If it's for both it would be great! I use a Mac and I have 3x Airport Express, but find myself mostly using Roku Soundbridge, cause it has a remote and a screen, too bad about ITMS DRM :-(

Hi peeps, this device is interesting but not sure if its exactly what I'm looking for, (it doesn't need to act as deliverer but as receiver) the architecture I'm looking at setting up revolves around a home server, serving video (to my ps3, currently in the process of porting my hundreds of dvds) and music (to any compatible device accessible to the network). Now preferably I would like an all in one stereo system that can receive from server's such as TVersity, I would go for just a receiver but as the cd tray has gone tits up on the stereo I might as well look for an all in one to start with. What ever it is it must have good playlist control (currently the ps3 is pants in acting as a receiver as if I want to setup playlists I must copy the files locally! and there's no random play which isn't good when my track collection contains hundreds of cd singles with x versions of the same track), so links, pointers and advice is all welcome at this stage
