Toshiba's keeps analog TV flowing with their new DVD portable
We just saw that Nintendo is planning a TV tuner for the DS, but now
we're seeing one of those tried and true analog TV tuners pop up in a slightly less unexpected place, a new portable
DVD player from Toshiba. The SD-P1700 sports a 7-inch screen, can view pictures with its memory card reader, and that's
about it. You'll also need an external antenna to any decent reception, but until we get some of that DVB-H service, this
looks like the best we can do.

Ok, somebody school me here. What's with the analog tuners when every local TV station is now legally required to broadcast digitally? Wouldn't it make more sense to put a digital tuner in products like this?

My mom needs a little TV now. In 2-3 years when Digital Tuners are required to get any reception, she'll just get a new Thingamabob to do it.
I just wish they gave a clue as to how much it costs. They probably opver priced it at $500 or something.

Are analog TV tuners cable ready? If so, then i've been looking for something like this to put next to a monitor / speaker set up. I'm hoping to split my cable and watch TV and DVDs on my LCD monitor and record to a PMP.

I have wondered why companies have never added this feature, considering it is a natural fit, and also considering that portable DVD players are so popular now. I know Polaroid sells one through Wal-Mart that has a huge, clunky TV "base station" attachment, but this Toshiba model looks like the same size as most other units that don't have the TV feature...

Oh, this doesn't have the outputs for what I want to do... If anyone sees a small form factor DVD player with S-video and composite video out and 5.1 audio optical out (LCD screen optional), please post about it. Thanks.

From what I've read, in Japan they're not shutting down their analog broadcasts until 2011. That might be a reason that they still sell analog tuners.

I bought a Mustek portable DVD last year with a tv tuner. I take it to football games so I can watch replays and other games. 10" screen for under $300.00.

Can you call this news? Orbit has been making this TV/DVD 2-in-1 since 2000! and Shinco has introduced external TV tuner to go with their portable DVD player since 2004
DVB-T Digital TV (like freeview in UK) on the remove is not possible in UK as you will not get any signal with a tiny aerial.
