Toshiba's Qosmio G35-AV600
It hasn't even been a month
and a half and already Toshiba's upgraded the Qosmio G30 we
saw launched at CES with their new Qosmio G35-AV600. It's
still got the Intel Core Duo and a nice 1440 x 900 widescreen with nVidia GeForce Go 73000 graphics, dual SATA drives,
dual-layer DVD burner, a gig of DDR2 SDRAM, media adapter, and all the rest -- but now includes higher end media
features like a 1-bit digital amplifier (which they're claiming is the first found in a laptop), Dolby Home Theater
certification, and harman/kardon's Bass Reflex Speaker technology. You're gonna pay $2,399 for the privilege though, so
we hope you like your media well done, kid.

I think you mean 7300, not 73000. Oh, and Ive never used a SATA laptop HDD, are they really any faster than an IDE one?
Nice spooge image on the monitor there.... NOT!
That is a truly bizarre image all fleshy toned like that... with such a suggestive primary shape.

That's expensive for a laptop. OTOH, it's not expensive for a home theater PC.
The Qosmio G35-AV600 includes two 80GB 5400 RPM serial ATA hard disk drives.
Is this good for editing video?
I thought 7200 rpm was required?
#1 = Yes, SATA drives are definitely faster than IDE drives, even in laptops. Although the amount of gain is mediated by the 5400 RPM speed.
#3 = Expensive for a laptop? Find one cheaper and I'll happily point out why it's cheaper...
#4 = 7200rpm isn't required for video editing, but it most definitely helps. Look at Mac laptops, they're generally considered good for portable video editing, but they use 5400rpm drives. Besides, if you're really into video editing, $2,400 will get you a much nicer desktop and larger monitor for your needs.
Before posting this I did some searching for a better laptop, even checking with the "cheap crap" brands like Dell/Compaq/Acer, and I really can't find anything that's a better deal. The stats are nice, I love the fact that the video has it's own 256M RAM, rather using shared RAM. It's got all the bells and whistles, mmmm... I wonder how many pints of blood I'd have to sell to get $2,400. :)
I realize that this is a monster 10lb desktop replacement that fallso way outside the typical laptop design specs.
Still, from the looks of it the design of this thing is atrocious. It's like the polar opposite of Apple's design aesthetics.

Actually, my first impression was Toshiba is sticking its tongue out at consumers..."Nah, nah, we better then you"
I have the older model Qosmio with dual SCSI hardisks in a RAID array. It is well under 10 lbs and a superb computer. The display uses a 2 tube fluorescent backlight making it brighter than Apple's macintel notebook by a factor of 2.
The Qosmio is one of the best reviewed computers on the Internet. The design is gorgeous in piano black. Ignore any mac-boy scum comments about this machine.
>The display uses a 2 tube fluorescent backlight making it brighter than Apple's macintel notebook by a factor of 2.
How much battery life do you get with 2 fluorescent backlights?
Ignoring that, it doesn't seem all that portable:
Weight: 10.1 lbs
Height: 1.79 inches
It looks like a good desktop replacement, as long as you don't have to travel a lot with it and leave it plugged in to enjoy the bright screen. :)
Does the G35 include the ability to watch HD-TV and play the new HD-DVD's that will be out this summer?
I am seriously considering this as a desktop replacement, but is this a good match for someone that is planning on using it for autocad and adobe creative suite? would the G35 be able to handle this or should I go with a dell that I could customize to be more powerful and have more memory?
any info would help, i'm not too savvy with computers! Thanks!
Okay,in shopping for a new laptop i have read (seriously) a hundred reviews over last couple weeks. I now am either going to go with Qosmio G25 or this new G35...problem is, I can't find any reviews on this G35! I've read the same "description" on many many web sites about what it has, but no actual "what's annoying or what they should or shouldn't have done" kind of reviews. How long ago did this model come out, and WHEN am I going to see some real reviews from people that have actually USED it? I've checked all the bigger computer online/magazine sites etc.. and still no real "I've used it" reviews.
I too can't find any true operational reviews of the Qosmio G35-AV600. I thought is was going with a high end, customized HP dv8000, but I'm considering this model now. Any suggestions out there?
Hi, i can see that all of you have g35 s so would you please upload le send me the recovery files i' ve been looking for them for a long time or somebody could tellme were could i find them.
Thank you !
SDO.
I had the DV8000 and have just stepped up to the G35. Well, This thing is like the Infinity G35. It has everything. It is so fast, solid, and yes heavy. But, I am 6'5 and want a laptop that doesn't feel like it is going to fly away when I am carrying it around.
The dual drives can be activated to RAID level 0. Which is very nice. The screen is amazing, the sound, well, there is no way to describe it. I have never heard a laptop with sound like this. Tuner is intergrated, DVD DL is fast (feels like a 16x).
Oh, and one more thing.
Every spec sheet out there says it is a 256 Video card. Nope. Buddy it is 512MB Dedicated! Did not know there was such a thing in a laptop, but I can play COD2 with direct x 9 in 800x600 flawless, and with a rollback to direct x 7 in the game, I get 1440x900 with no lag at all.
This is the most complete laptop I have ever owned. Get it you will not regret it.
The only drawback is the fingerprints. you will find yourself cleaning this laptop constantly.
Thanks for the info Dave. How's the TV tuner card work? How good is the IR remote? I'd like to be able to sit this on the coffe table and surf the net with watching the ball game. Is that possible? Also, do you think video editing is done well? Do you find the slow CPU clock speed to be aproblem with anything? Thanks.
Sorry, I meant Chuck, not Dave
Tony, I don't see why you could not do what you want to do. I have it connected to an external monitor and run media center app full screen on that, and then surf on the laptop. Video editing is fast. Very fast. And don't let the Clock speed fool you. Speed is not based only on clock speed. This thing is dual core. 2 processores. That run symetrical to one another. So it is as fast if not faster than a 3.4GHZ desktop. IR is great, and everything is solid.
Ok, I got one. Here is the *real* issue. Try installing any OS other than the media center edition that the laptop comes with, and you are talking about a royal pain in the a**. I have been working with this thing for a day now, and have not been able to install XP pro. Nothing but errors when I try to use the Toshiba RAID drivers. Talk to toshiba, they say use the recovery CD. Hey you don't have one, tough luck.
I recently purchased this computer through Toshiba Direct which was probably a mistake. I like to be able to take computers back to brick and mortar stores if something goes wrong but being the type of person who can't wait for the next great thing...well..you know the rest. Setup on the computer was a breeze albeit a little slow especially for a Dual Core processor even if it is running at 1.86 GHz. The screen is absolutely amazing...very clear with the occasional glare when angled a certain way. I've been using this computer for a week now and have only encountered an occasional freeze up which is a bit perplexing considering how much on board memory it has. I won't be doing a lot of gaming on this computer so the limitations of the graphics card wasn't a concern although it would seem as though they could have upgraded the graphics and still remained within a respectable price point. As far as features are concerned...who could ask for more. Toshiba has more than enough connectivity options sans an HDMI connection. The keyboard is comfortable and laid out well with plenty of programmable shortcut options on the slick retooled touchpad. The biometric sensor is a nice addition for those of you with security issues. The software that comes with the computer is mostly pathetic trial versions that you would have to buy upgrades to anyway. The sound system will definitely exceed your expectations, but wouldn't base my purchase on it. Why don't computers come with Windows installation CD's anymore? Toshiba is no exception. As a matter of fact they say it's on the Restore disk but I have yet to see it. Quite frankly I haven't had a reason to reinstall yet. Don't plan on lugging this thing around too far....ITS HEAVY!! I bought it as a desktop replacement so that isn't an issue nor is the battery life as I leave it plugged in, but I must say that batter life is subpar at best. Toshiba doesn't offer a stronger replacement battery...HMMM?! Overall this computer is an excellent blend of price and performance when compared to comparable models from Dell, Sony, and HP which I also researched before making my purchase. The fact is when you read reviews such as this...they are only as good as the person reviewing them and undoubtedly there will always be someone with very negative comments about a particular model either because they aren't a fan of a certain brand or they got a bad machine. So far I am very happy with this purchase and will update as needed.

I just received the Toshiba Qosmio G35 AV600 as a gift (yes, very lucky!) and I'm loving it. I'm not as tech savvy as it appears you all are, all I know is that this is one awesome machine - great display and sound, solid keyboard with enough room to support your wrists, and incredibly fast.
It would be great if someone here could share their experience with and reason for hooking this laptop up to the tv? Does it perhaps do the same things as TIVO, or what? Thanks for not laughing at my question : > )
I am planning on buying this notebook soon, but I have many questions. Is the video card 256MB or 512MB? Did anyone tried playing new games in it? Is it VISTA verified in case I wanted to install it when it's released? How is the tv Tuner functioning compared to Dell's one? Can I use TV tuner internationally out of the US?
ALL HELPS APPRECIATED GUYS thanks
It's one of the very few laptops that offer 4GB of Ram.
All the specs are great: coreduo/2Sata/ gfg7300...
The only Real bummer for me is the relatively Low Res screen!
At this level 17'ers, I would expect WUXGA (1920X1200) to view HD movies and video editing space!
The Dell M90 is really expensive though..
[[I am planning on buying this notebook soon, but I have many questions. Is the video card 256MB or 512MB? Did anyone tried playing new games in it?]]
I am also considering the laptop, and have serious concerns about the performance of the geforce 7300 gs as compared with the 7900 on the p105-s921 by toshiba..
has anybody played new games on the g35? which games, etc?
thanks
