PSP2 to get 4GB flash and live streaming digital camera?
Take this for what
you will, but PSPworld has it from an "anonymous source" that the next version of Sony's PSP (the PSP2, if
you will, or perhaps it'll be the PSPtwo?) will feature a new video chat service via a tiny integrated camera which
will allow users to stream live video to the PlayStation 3 via WiFi before linking up with that HUB PlayStation service. The
off-the-shelf video camera is said to be located directly below the PSP's screen (where the logo is currently) and
presumably of the Motion
Eye variety already available in some Sony Ericsson phones and Vaio laptops. Oh, and
that 8GB of
NAND storage rumor -- not gonna happen according to this source. It'll still be NAND but of the 4GB variety
instead. We should also see about 1/4-inch whittled off the current PSP choice of black, white, and
silver. We're not in a position to vouch or validify any of these rumors, however, so if it doesn't happen, not our
deal (but if it turns out to be true, you heard it here first -- hopefully)!

#11: I also don't understand how UMDs sell, they're more expensive, have less features than DVD and it's a Sony format - which is by definition crippled by stupid restrictions.
Sony hasn't learned anything, they always try to push something into the market BY THEIR rules. It just works the other way around - what customers want is important!
90% of these folks must be kiddies who hate to see PSP upgrade because they just spend there allowance money on the current PSP and don't want to miss out on cool new features. GET OVER IT! Apple charges 299.99 for an iPod that can only play music and play video. Yet they come out with cooler iPods every year and make people buy them, that's business. As long as games are supported the PSP will continue to bring new functionalities to it. Games support will be leveraged to PS3, stay tuned!!
Why do I keep getting these wrong? #34 was meant to be directed to #31, sorry bout that #28
I donno why I keep getting the numbers wrong
@ #50
What Portable gaming system had a rechargable batteries before the SP? The Wonderswan? No, I don't think so.
And yeah sure they could've put a backlight in early, but look at what happened to Game Gear, it has like less than 3 hours of battery life (I used ot own one).
I dunno, I think Ninty's just doing things when they're ready and when it makes sense.
Dude, look at the PSP, I don't really think the camera makes sense.
4G of Flash makes a lot of sense, If this happens, I fdon't know, I might re-buy a PSP (I sold my first one cause I couldn't afford any more memory). But if it cost $400, it's off my list.
I'm actually using Play-Yan right now and it's pretty cool.
#49 (Jimmy Dean incase the numbers change on me again), The GameBoy Advance SP was just a GBA in a different form. It had the same features, same hardware, the only thing different was the way it looked and the battery. This, is different. It has more space and it has a camera, not just a different battery. And I didn't see what was so great about the SP, I was prolly like 11 or so when I had a GBA and the GBA SP came out and I just looked at it like it was my GBA in a different form, which it was. You see, Nintendo is just re designing their products a year after release, Sony is changing their products a year after release, there is a big difference.
The Gamecube was not a failure, I love my Gamecube, I play it way more than my PS2, and about as much as my Xbox. The Gamecube is great for multiplayer gaming. I mean, when you have a lot of people at your house, like you have your cousins over to your house or something, the games that everyone play are Mario Kart and Smash Bros because everyone knows how to play them because it's easy to learn how to play them. People of all ages can enjoy the Gamecube. And there's lots of great Gamecube titles, Mario Kart Double Dash, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Super Mario Strikers (the idea of a Mario soccer gmae seems stupid, but if you actually play the game it gets very addicting) Resident Evil 4(on PS2 too, I think) , Metroid, I hear Battalation Wars is pretty good, and there's many more games that're only available to Gamecube
You know why Nintendo never pisses anyone off? Because Nintendo is a good company! Have you ever tried Sony's customer service? On the phone for an hour arguing with the person, then I have to send it into Texas, gets back in 3 weeks or so. Nintendo, you call them up, you get a representitive ammediatly, they listen to you, they agree with you, you send it to a location near you (the one I sent it to was an hour away), gets back in 2-4 days.
And the DS Lite? Like I said before about the SP, just a re design. Sure it's a little early, but people in Japan want it, so they're releasing it in Japan.
Why do they keep fooling around with a dinky little 4gb hd? By summer the open market will see 2tb on a postage stamp size media card. Come on, gimme like 400gb and let me really start playing!

@ Jimmy Dean:
Nice nick. Why don't you do us all a favor and go for a drive?
The PSP 2 should not even bother with discs or cartridges. They both are expensive, and DRM and common high speed internet make an online game store which uses flash memory for storage feasible. I've always thought media for a portable system has not been the best idea, as you risk loss or damage. For those lacking high speed internet, the games could be sold at brick and morter stores on DVDs and be transfered through a PC to the system via USB.
I've got a PSP and I use it more than any other of my previously owned handheld device's. Before the PSP I used a Gameboy advance for gaming and an ipaq for mp3/movie playing/internet. I'm not a pure gamer, I'm a 30 year old father of a small baby boy and I work 8 hours a weekday, so its suits me down to the ground. MP3 player as I bike to and from work, RSS/MP3 player providing podcast/music at work in my speaker dock (And sometimes the odd sneaky bit of Web browsing or game).
When I come home I can then relax and choose to play a few games or watch a movie whilst the missus watches TV and my baby son sleeps (so a maximum of 1 to 2 hours of game playing a day). Hell, I even use it on the toilet to read an (ongoing) eBook or surf the web! I've given the ipaq to the missus and the Gameboy Advance gathers dust because my son is too young to play it.
The main problem is alot of people compare it to the DS because its "Primary" use is for gaming... well thats all down to how you want to use it, to me its primary use isn't gaming, its whatever you fancy doing at the time, thats what I like about it, I can choose.
I agree with what Sony first said that PSP isn't designed to compete with DS. Its in its own nich? think, its just the general public thats placed it in direct competition with the DS because of the Playstation heritage. People that buy the PSP purely for games are wasting their money... buy a DS instead and stop complaining. Much the same as if somebody bought a PSP just for MP3 playback and video... don't, instead buy an iPod. I don't see anyone comparing the PSP to iPod, if so then the price and video quality of the PSP would look alot nicer for a start.
Speaking of video... am I the only one that was utterly blown away by the quality of UMD (for a handheld device)? Ok, I agree that Sony have maybe gotten a bit carried away with the excess of UMD movies being pushed out, but when I saw the spiderman trailer on my demo UMD I was awe-struck.
OH! and I think this "Rumour" will never happen. At best we might see a slimmer PSP in the future much in the same vein as the DS lite. Or more like Apple with their ever changing iPod range. Nobody complains about that now do they? Of course they do! But Apple still sell many many iPods... as many as the DS? If not, does that make iPod a failure?
I love my PSP version (1.5 fw & 2Gig MS) and I am quite happy with the games currently available. I ditched my DS when the PSP came out and haven't regretted it not once. Then again I'm a 42 year old adult gamer and not a teenager gamer.
The only gripe I have on the design of the PSP is the location of the power switch. I always tend to accidently hit it right when I'm in the middle of a game. Sony should have put the power switch at the top of the unit, less in the way of hitting it in error.
With games like GTA:LC, Socom:FTB, N4S:MW, Burnout Legends, Crash Tag Team Racing just to name a few. All in their 3d glory on a portable handheld. Battery life is about 4 to 6 hours average and not a problem for me.
Pricing isn't even an issue to me, when you compare the big difference between the DS & PSP. I was sold from the first time I help the PSP in my hands. No more 2d kids games for me. The DS does not even come close in 3d gaming to the PSP.
I envy all of you who have psp's. I wish I had one! I cant afford it. I wish That someone would give me one!
I wouldnt doubt it if sony actually came out with a psp2 this year. The idea is shocking and really unthinkable. Why would any company not simply perfect what they already have?
My first thought is that Mabye the PSP really cant be pushed anymore. Mabye the memory restrictions keep it from doing everything people believe it can do. how much ram does this device have anyway?
Its a great device, but why wont they open up the device to so many more things. For example:
1. An RSS Reader so you can read news on the go
2. Better Games(Mabye the games suck cause the developers know there is something else on the horizon-like inconnectivity with the ps3 for the psp2)
3).A freakin video folder with ease of use.
4). The ability to have the videos play straight through all videos in your folder (the music folder does that.)
5). The ability to xfer files wirelessly (with a router or using bluetooth- hell you can do it with pictures.)
6). Something on the damn music screen when the music plays
Adding a 4gb hard drive, a camera and calling it a psp2-lol thats beyond outrageous. Not too mention that they may get rid of the umd part (where the hell will the games go! (Thats a whole different way of delivering games after a year!) To be honest i have a 2gb card. I heard a four and 8gb card should be coming out in august. Why get the hard drive?
The camera could be interesting, but if the psp2 still doesnt have the features listed above. It wont be worth buying, because the additions will probably be half-as* additions like everything else they've done to the first psp.
My jaw drops in disbelief at the thought of a psp2 after a year. A 4gb harddrive when you have 4gb memory sticks. An addition of a camera when everything else on the device is half-as*. I honestly think the addition of all this multimedia stuff/firmware updates is to draw people away from realizing that so much of this device isnt well thought out and limited. First the browser, then the location free player-lol- for 300.00 then the rss feeds then the wma play back. Sony will lose my respect and money if they comeout with a psp2 by the end of the year!
If this happens im going to get very PISSED OFF!!
They get our hopes up high about the so called futuristic peice of technology aka the psp.
But were is all the hardware that comes with it? they prommised an unbilevible amount of addons such as: a detachable camera, a detachable areial for mobile technology, a language translator that can translate ur existing voice into 12 differant languages and loads more.
To be honest yes i was also fooled by the too good to be true PSP, but at the end of the day we all was. even your adverage nintendo fanatics said in the depths of there hearts..(i should have bought one of those). It's as if we was ripped off by one of the worlds leading technology company's. some would say it's just a case of donkey lead carrott, as apposed to donkey eat carrott.
well i've expressed my feeling on this stupid outrage on the "unknown source" so i think i'll just have to do as we always do, just sit about and wait. just as we are for the second delay on the all singing all dancing !!!PS3!!!.
p.s sory engaget i did'nt mean to take over your job just then lol =p
Seriously, compared to the DS Lite, the PSP is more powerful, better looking, and a better system - from a hardware standpoint.
But let's look at games.
DS:
Mario Kart DS - Great!
Super Mario 64 DS - Great!
Kirby Canvas Curse - Great!
Monkey Ball Touch & Roll - Cool!
Castlevania - Sweet!
Goldeneye - Nice.
The list goes on.
PSP:
Umm....lemmings. And I have that on my old DOS machine, anyway.
Yeah, Wipeout Pure looks good, but it gets old after a while...every level is really similar..I mean, the tilesets are different, but they're all just turn, turn, jump, turn, finish.
Sony, what the f**k good is an überconsole if there are no games worth playing?
Seriously, picked up a ds for the first time the other day and played Mario Kart.
Felt more like a childrens toy than a new gen portable device.
Mario Kart... yawn, crap graphics and a game i played 10 years ago. Boring.
PSP has some excellent games:
Pro evo soccer..Brilliant! Totally addictive, has anyone played it????
Virtua Tennis..Brilliant...far more enjoyable than top spin on my xbox 360.
WWE Wrestling...Quite Good.
Ridge Racer...V Good
and do on...
PSP-multimedia on the go
DS-childrens toy purely for games.
RSS feed on psp allows you to stream from itunes to your psp so you don't actually need a 4 gig memory stick.
Web Browser allows you to control your itunes remotely
using a program called Playerpal.
Bargin, compared to a video ipod which costs more and does only one thing. i own one also but use my psp a lot more.
What i'd like to see is "hot switching" between web browser and games etc to cut out loading times for games and also more memory for the web browser.
So what if they bring out a new psp, noboddy has to buy aniother one, you still got a bargin with the origional one. Thank you sony for making sauch a cool and affordable device.
i hope they make a psp2 and bring out a loose umd drive to use with your comp and copy games to memory stick or something like that
otherwise i will sell my psp and all games
I also think the current crop of PSP games are excellent... look at games like Metal Gear Acid 2, Syphon Filter, the upcoming Godfather game... these are all games that have very interesting gameplay characteristics (turn-based and card-based strategy, stealth shooter and action-adventure, respectively). There is very little on the DS that has this kind of gameplay. Most games are of the "toy" variety - either aimed at kids or just fun little arcade games. There is nothing like those games I mentioned above, or at least if there is I certainly can't find them.
I am looking forward to getting a PSP, but incase these rumours are true, I'm going to wait a little longer and see what pans out pre-Christmas.
ha sony now i am going to buy psp and you are going to make psp2 thats not good
hmm. im thinking about buying the PSP3 but i've never really played any games or done any of that or bought any of it. im really just getting it for the other things you can put on it, like music, pictures, music videos, and internet, and idk other stuff. would i be wasting my money?
pleassee let me know if ill be wasting my money.
how much do you think that goes for anyways?
it jus shows that sony thinks that the psp hasnt made a big hit so they need to make a whole new thing.
i hope they accule DO have games from ps2, on this next psp your all speaking of
Hi guys
ive been reading ur comments
and in my opinion if you can all sit there and lay hard baggage on the psp then it cant possibly be that bad considering the fact that your all talking about it. I have a psp and to be honest with you i love it, ill admit the games could be better, and it would be nice if they were compatible with other handhelds, but if this is the way that sony wants to make money then let them do it.
And hey its working, Sony is making a fortune off these things so u bagging it isnt making a difference to there profit. Maybe you should have all done ur research a little better before forking out $400.00 and then complaining about it. Its ur fault if u dont like it you should have done ur research.
All the additional features are a bonnus if you ask me. ive read some of ur comments about the fact that you cant really play any games coz of the of the minimal variety, and coz there are so many other features, no one asked u to by it its there for people who want it. If you wanted game time with no features then you should have stuck to the Nintendo SP.
Ive also heard of another impresive feature of the probable psp2, its a touch screen, for all of you out there who think that the touch screen will screw ur game time as well as all the other useless features of the psp (in accordance to you) then dont buy it. Simple as that!!!
yes there's already a psp2 out in the market. as i was in the mall here in the philippines, i was looking for a replacement of my psp which was stolen then i saw a this psp2. it says it's psp2 lite and slim. that's what is written on the box. and it's cheaper.
