Dell's E1505 shows up online
If Dell's E1505 that went up on their site looks suspiciously similar to the Inspiron 9400 or
their E1705, it's because it's the 15-inch version of that same new Core Duo line of theirs. The E1505 can be
configured with your choice of specs up to a 2.0GHz Core Duo, Media Center 2005, 2GB of DDR2 SDRAM, a 15.4-inch WSXGA
(1680 x 1050) display, 120GB drive, and dual layer DVD burner in a 10.45 x 14 x 1.44-inch chassis. No word on how much
or when ("coming soon!"), but if you can't wait, it's not like you don't have other Core Duo laptop options right now.[Thanks, Michael and Ben]

The Dell 9400 and E1705 are the same product, one is for business the other is for home. They both support Solo or Duel Core processors and have been for sale for about a month. Those two models include a 17" Display. The E1505 will be the same but have a 15" Display and will be for sale the first week of March.

GMA950 :(
I don't like the size of the 17". 15.4" is perfect.
Michael Dulitz @ Feb 25th 2006 10:31AM
I like my 17" dell, I could see why people would think it is too big, but I rarely take it off my desk so Im fine with it
first time I got published too :D
VanSickle @ Feb 25th 2006 10:36AM
I crave an ultraportable like the fujitsu P7120 with:
>=2.0GHz Core Duo
Nvidia video chipset
12" or 13" screen (ws)
Something powerful enough to replace my desktop but small enough so it would be easy to pick up and go. I've got money burning a hole in my pocket...
mr @ Feb 25th 2006 10:44AM
Would love to see a side-by-side comparison of this and the MacBook Pro.
kev @ Feb 25th 2006 10:53AM
If it's only got integrated graphics then my Acer still stands up to it (component-wise).
Ben @ Feb 25th 2006 10:53AM
l was so deadset on getting the Compaq V2000Z, but this is starting to claw at my back saying "Buy me!"
Road Tester @ Feb 25th 2006 10:57AM
I've actually been very happy with the size of my Inspiron 9400 - although one security officer (a lady) at the airport thought it was so big. Useless to say: I don't mind a lady telling me something is "so big" ;).
But honestly, the size of the screen is very useful. I'd recommend going for the 1280px version, though. I took the 1680px one, and it is very small at times and makes working difficult. I usually change it to 1280px, which screws up the graphics a little, but makes the writing more legible.
What I like about Dell, is that you can specify up to 2GB of RAM. When I got mine, Dell were the only ones to offer this in this preice range.
SwampHHH @ Feb 25th 2006 11:20AM
The thing about the 1505 is that it only seems to offer the GMA950 integrated graphics solution whereas the 1705 gives you the option of the 7800 GO. I'd prefer the smaller 1505 but I'd like discrete graphics in its larger cousin.

#4 - why even have a laptop if you dont take it off your desk - get a desktop

The Toshiba M400 is out...somewhat similar but slower Core Duo (although it still is damn fast), and it's a tablet to boot. Better than this hunk of junk w/o discrete graphics.

17" isn't really my bag, I like portable to mean portable and not arm achingly cumbersome.

Wow. That looks just like the Apple Titanium Powerbook from like 3 or 4 years ago... Sweet design Dell.

I'm looking for a 14-15" screen laptop with WSXGA or SXGA resolution with Core Duo that can support 2GB of RAM in the 5lb weight class. Anyone know of a laptop like that? It seems the asus line WILL have one, but anything shipping today?
Ben @ Feb 25th 2006 12:47PM

I have just purchased my first DELL pc,and I love, love ,love IT !

These seem to use the same design as the Inspiron 6000, the all-purpose mid-priced laptop that they sell millions of. I have one that I bought to tide me over until the 12" MacBookPro comes out. It's heavy, but it has a great screen and a great keyboard....
Ian @ Feb 25th 2006 2:47PM
#13, if you look you'll see all of the "light" notebooks are only WXGA (1080x800=.86MP). That's plain pathetic. I need at least 1.25MP of screen real estate. It seems like all the vendors are chinsing out out their LCD screens as of late.
yup @ Feb 25th 2006 3:33PM
It will have two stand alone graphic card options at the end of march, one of which is the nvidia 6800. It also will have a true life option where the 6000 didn't. It uses express card format now instead of pcmcia and will also be about 1/2 pound lighter than the 6000.
brian @ Feb 26th 2006 12:43AM
huh? i've been using my 6000 for a year now and it's rockin ati xpress-300 of 128 non-shared ddr2 memory. it's on "PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0" i dont know what "true life" means, but do elaborate." :)
Mark @ Feb 28th 2006 11:20AM

I owned an Inspiron 6000 (Pentium M 715, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD and customized carbon fiber look) and I love my machine. The E1505 it's just an update, with same case and look but some minor differences in the back side. I use to renew my laptops every 2 years. First was a Compaq Presario 1246, replaced by an Inspiron 1100 (its gray & blue look was as amazing as unique), eventually replaced by my loyal Inspiron 6000. Next, hopefully, will be an E1505 with Core Duo, 1GB RAM, TrueLife display, no less than 60GB HDD and DVD burner if possible. Dell rules...

I need to order (though not necessarily receive) my new computer by the end of March for student loan purposes. To the people who say that this computer will be available with a dedicated graphics card by the end of the month, how do you know, and is that knowledge pretty reliable? Thanks for the help.
Kim Richer @ Mar 6th 2006 8:20PM
#22 - Could you tell me if the E1505 you just bought has scroll bars on the right side and bottom edge of the touchpad screen?
Mark Ingham @ Mar 6th 2006 10:40PM
Sorry ... it's on order.
Looks like an arrival date of about the 22-26th of March.
On the website, one picture looks like it has it and one doesn't.????
Kim Richer @ Mar 6th 2006 11:52PM
I stopped at a Dell retail store and the E1705 has it, so if you assume that the 1505 is just a smaller-screen version of the 1705, it should. But the person on the Dell sales chat didn't understand what I was asking about, and says that it doesn't have it. You'd think that would be a feature they'd make common knowledge.
Mark @ Mar 7th 2006 11:10AM
I think it is safer to assume that the E1505 will use the same chassis as the 6000 or 6400.
Neither of those (in the pictures) have the scroll bars you're referring to.
Mark @ Mar 14th 2006 5:41PM
Got my E1505, It does have the scroll bars.
Bill in DC @ Mar 21st 2006 11:38PM
This is the successor to the 6000 line, correct? Was the 6000 line the successor to my beloved-but-dying Inspiron 8500?
I had a bad experience with an Inspiron 9300 last month and had to return it -- pixelated images off of most websites. Anybody notice this on the 1505?
Also, I hate the glossy tru-brite or whatever screens and am opting for a basic XGA screen. Is there any point in getting the better video cards?
ThanhVu @ Apr 3rd 2006 12:52AM
The Inspiron E1505 which is the Inspiron 6400 (with the exception of Windows version) now has dedicated graphics (up to 256MB Radeon Mobile).
It is much lighter than my current Dell 5150.
Peter Galbraith @ May 22nd 2006 10:46AM
Can anyone tell me an approx weight for the E1505? Thanks
