I've actually been very happy with the size of my Inspiron 9400 - although one security officer (a lady) at the airport thought it was so big. Useless to say: I don't mind a lady telling me something is "so big" ;).
But honestly, the size of the screen is very useful. I'd recommend going for the 1280px version, though. I took the 1680px one, and it is very small at times and makes working difficult. I usually change it to 1280px, which screws up the graphics a little, but makes the writing more legible.
What I like about Dell, is that you can specify up to 2GB of RAM. When I got mine, Dell were the only ones to offer this in this preice range.
