Pong in the 3D Display Cube
We've already done Pong
physically (Pongmechanik), mentally (Mindball), chronologically (Pong clock), telephonically (SymBall),
socially (Fishpong) and
robotically (Butterfly Amicus
3000), but we ain't never done it 3D -- at least not this kind of 3D. James Clar's 3D Display Cube, a
multi-dimensional grid of 1,000 individually activated LEDs, shown off how? 3D Pong man, what else? We just wish we'd
caught this sooner, looks like Clar's been parading this thing around for a little while now -- the Cube's latest stop
is at the Japan Media Arts Festival in Tokyo.

People living in or around Stuttgart, Germany, can see this 3D pong live and in color at the "pong.mythos" exhibition.
It's organized by the W?embergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart and they have all the necessary information on their website: http://http://wkv-stuttgart.de/
I have been there and really enjoyed it. If you go, be sure to check out the Painstation!

Going off on a tangent here... about the Butterfly ping pong machine. Machines like that have been available for a long time - I was playing table tennis competitively as a kid more than 15 years ago, and I practiced with a machine that did the same thing - you can set the direction, spin and most other things. Just like a tennis ball machine.

I saw this last summer in Chicago at Wired Magazine's Nextfest. It was quite cool but hard to play.
The problem is when looking at the grid, there is a lot of blank space and therefore your mind has a hard time finding depth.
Adding more lights would surely fix it.
But it was very cool.
