Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook Q2010 hands-on: desirable?
And now,
the question you've been dying to have answered after yesterday's big announcement: Is the Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook
Q2010 really the world's "most desirable laptop," as the company would have us believe? (What, did you
think we were talking about that other
announcement?) Well, mmeier got to try out the svelte, sleek notebook at the Fujitsu Siemens press conference (and
snapped some great pics, as well), and came away impressed with its "crazy and awesome design and build
quality," which includes a magnesium case painted with jet-black piano lacquer. Connectivity was smooth, thanks to
the unit's HSDPA support, and the Q2010 proved to be incredibly thin and lightweight. Big downside? Well, in addition to
the price (about $5,000), there's the matter of battery life. While Fujitsu is reporting it as eight hours, the included
battery will only give you two. For the full eight, you'll need a larger battery that sort of defeats the purpose of an
ultralight fashion laptop like this. Of course, if you can afford this, you can probably just buy a couple of extra
two-hour batteries and have your minions carry them around for you.

Be able to lift and carry 100LBS for extended periods of time. Starting salary: $1.24/day.

I like the big ol' ugly Fujitsu logo stamped on the thing. Completely kills the whole look. As usual, Apple's the only one out there with any class...

I don't see how it is desirable when its got that tiny ass screen on it, with crappy resolution to boot. Geez I might as well use a PDA.
Look how big the bezel is there, they could have added 2 more inches to the screen.

What? to 2. That's a small logo and that's where Fujitsu always puts their logo/trademark.

Make this a Tablet PC and I'll buy one right away!
matt @ Mar 1st 2006 1:02PM
the closest i've ever seen to matching apple's quality, style, and power in the PC market, but, sadly, it's extremely overpriced (even by APPLE'S standards!) and the logo DOES ruin it...

The company's logo doesn't kill the look at all, and they did in fact make it. This looks much classier than any Apples, which in most cases look like toys. The only thing that makes this not so desireable (that I can see so far) is the price, which is outrageous. Anyways, time for the Apple fanboys to get their panties up in a bunch. Just so you know, I do like toys.

As usual, YMMV. Just everybody I know with taste has agreed that the logo is clumsy and completely kills the simplicity and cleaness of the design. Fujitsu-Siemens... just rolls off the tongue. Much better than the iconic Apple logo, no?

@ keir,
how is 1600x1200 crappy resolution? sounds pretty good to me for a 12" screen...
daaper @ Mar 1st 2006 1:53PM
edit: nevermind, that's for external displays...it's only 1280x800

Hey Stevie -
Read the fuc*ing article. People who buy this laptop are not buying it for performance. If they were, they could get all the same features in roughly the same sized package for less than half the price.
They're paying this kind of cash because they want something with beautiful design, something tasteful. I'll gladly admit I paid a premium for my PowerBook because I wanted something that didn't look like ass. This outfit came close, but with that one little logo they manage to prove that PC makers still don't have a clue.

i dont want none of the above - i want to piss on you

Hey, do you think it might clear up the fanboi problem we've got around this place if we stamp an Apple logo on a Roach Motel?
As to the notebook, it looks good, but between the mediocre battery life and expense account price tag, I'll pass.
john @ Mar 1st 2006 3:09PM
Personall, the Samsung line of notebooks look much sleeker and has amazing battery life too. Sucks that they don't sell them in the states however... Fujitsu looks nice but could be better and a LOT cheaper
Camperton @ Mar 1st 2006 3:15PM
10 - - that's all well and good, but the laptop in question here has a 2 hour battery life and 5 grand price tag. so talking about functionality seems a bit futile don't ya think.
Jcee @ Mar 1st 2006 3:36PM
#2 Would it make you feel better if Fujisu offered a $499 leather slip cover?
Bob Rutherford @ Mar 1st 2006 3:47PM
Was in a big shop in London last week, doing the usual "wow, that's nice but I have no money, sorry." routine.
Anyhow - all the PCs and Apples were in separate sections. PC laptops from Fujitsu, Sony, Samsung - all really good specs and looked very modern. Went to the Apple section, and they all looked a bit worn out, bland, plain - tired.
And before you Apple hitmen turn your flames on to me, I have an ipod that I love. I have no issues as such with Apple, I'm just trying to say that the everything white laptop situation is in need of freshening up.
This Fujitsu to me looks very nice, and a Fujitsu Siemens logo is not a deal breaker.
Steve Henderson @ Mar 1st 2006 4:07PM
Is that 2 hrs. of battery life with the cellular radio enabled? If so, it might be forgiveable...
Beau @ Mar 1st 2006 4:36PM
What?!? I can think of a whole slew of notebooks with greater aesthetic appeal. Of course this is all subjective, point being probably most can.
The best IMO? Asus W2V, hands down. If you put the Asus next to this, I have a great deal of trouble believing less than 9/10 people would prefer the Asus.
Jeffery @ Mar 1st 2006 8:41PM
Desireable... if a rash is desireable. When will manufacturers clue in that a large 'frame' around the screen is, well, undesirable. Thanks for coming out... you can go home now.
