Alienware announces SLI dual graphics laptops
We
were still wrapping our minds around the whole concept of dual graphics card SLI systems when the dual SLI machines started
to hit, and now that SLI is making its way into laptops, we're not even sure if we want to keep up with the crazy
lengths gamers and manufacturers will go to for a few more FPS. That being said, Alienware is promising new AMD-powered
laptops with widescreen LCDs and SLI-powered dual NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards. Not a lot of other information for now,
but we're sure dual SLI for laptops can't be far behind.

Think this will help me get my frags up in doom 2?
wow but is that wut we need?? we need battery life
is this wut we need ??? we need more battery life
Meh, AMD powered laptops aren't that great. Intel has their number on both power and performance in laptops.
#2 Except the ones mentioned have Athlon 64's which beat the crap out the Pentium 4 / M chips in laptops.
Definatley right about power though.
dual core, dual graphics... now how about improving battery life to more than 10 minutes... and hopefully they'll have high-powered graphics for machines in the future that aren't 17-inchers, and 4 inches thick.
all this high-power stuff that let you run what, doom3 @ 120 fps in a 17-inch desktop replacement, why can't they make doom3 run 70 on a 12-incher? they need to concentrate on making smaller laptops viable for gaming.
im more interested with the aesthetic upgrade they gave to their laptops! that pic does not resemble their current line of m7700s notebooks! it looks much sleeker.
why does everyone get all excited over SLI anything? Am I really that old (24) that I'm the only one that remembers the Voodoo 3.... talk about getting fps up for Doom2
I could have built a portable (I think these caliber machines can hardly be called "laptop", unless you append "-heater" to that) SLI kit back then too, in a backpack. Even today they still weigh 3000 lbs and require a car battery to run for more than 15 minutes.
I think we have to keep in mind that alienware is known for their gaming not for the practical use of laptops. Go w/ ibm if you want a bussiness laptop w/ battery life, go w/ alienware if you want a gaming rig that is a laptop.
Say what you want about monster 17" laptop/leg burners. It is still easier to bring one to a LAN than a desktop, monitor, keyboard, and mouse
Prepare for negative battery life!
What a waste of juice...
That looks exactly like the promo shots for the MacBook Pro:

Wow dude... Check out my new 12 lbs. 4" thick laptop! It can run 10 minutes on batteries. Isn't it cool?
I do agree with 8. Something like that would be good for a LAN. But...really, having a laptop like that isn't useful for much beyond that. So unless you're loaded and going to A LOT of LAN's...stick to a good desktop for half the cost. ;)
this guy goes to lan parties with a laptop & not a mouse? what do obviously you don't play fps. that's okay. i play age of empires all the time (rts). but, i do play fps alot. i couldn't even tell you how many are in my library. (14)
Looks crap. Alienware have ripped Apple off in that promo shot, by having their case open. It looks exactly the same.
I don't need SLI anyway. I can run World of War Craft at 30 frames per second on my Mac Mini. I can also make DVD's with iLife and play music on my Ipod.
I'm pretty sure anyone who is interested in purchasing one of these laptops is aware that the battery is more for a UPS like functionality. I think it would be useful to rename laptop over a certain size to a different category. Maybe, 17inches+ should be called mobile PC's or something similar. I doubt anyone expects to use this thing on the train or anywhere else on the move. Instead, they're probably for people who move around from location to location alot, need a reasonably powered computer, and don't want to carry around a monitor, tower, and accessories. Unfortunately I can't imagine alot of people like that so I don't see how companies can sell alot of these machines, especially considering they cost ridiculous amounts of money.
"Except the ones mentioned have Athlon 64's which beat the crap out the Pentium 4 / M chips in laptops."
Never mind that the P4 for laptops is all but dead and that the Core Duo spanks the crap out of the single core A64's. It also does a remarkable job at keeping up with the X2's which are desktop processors. Move along troll. Nothing to see here.
Why is everyone bitching about the battery life? And size? That's not the point. The point is that you get a luggable powerhouse. If you buy something that will happily drive a high res 19" screen, why would you want a little one? The fact that they're noisy and hot doesn't matter to the people who buy them.

You guys are retarded. This is about portible power.
You know I am pretty sure someone else other than apple could have come up with a photo of their laptop cracked open.
Yeah that's uhhh... So creative. Only one person could every have figured that one out. Then again, all things come from Apple right?
Well.. except for the concept behind the Eminem promo video. They ripped that off a Lugz commercial.

What a pointless hunk of garbage. Seriously - what could anyone possibly use a 17" dual graphic card laptop for anyway - playing minesweeper? You could barely run WordPad on a low-end machine like that. Someone needs to take mobile computing a bit more seriously and think to the future. I use MSN a lot to chat with my friends when I'm on the go and I could really use the power and practicality of something with a bit bigger screen - like say a 50" plasma, and at least four graphic cards. Or better yet, eight ATI 1900XTX mobiles with four eSATA ports, quad Raptor drives, Bluetooth, genital scanner, espresso maker and 8-track cassette deck. And I want it to cost like - a million dollars, because I sold all of my Google stock last year that I picked up in 1983 and I have some serious cash to waste on a massive silicon penis pump.
Oh for gods sake!! Why so many complaints about the battery life and the need for a laptop like this. I can assure you these things will sell. These things are produced in limited quantities and im sure Alienware will be struggling to get these out. They are practical full computers. Treat it as that, and nothing else.
And for battery life, with 2.xxghz (Dual)+ 400mhz for each graphics card, what do you expect? Battery technology has not gotten any better in the past few years. Even with an ultra low power pentium m and a small screen, you can only get 5 to 6 hours, and thats looking at your desktop doing nothing at all. Thats not fantastic if you ask me.
retards... how can u compare mini cooper with bugatti veyron in terms of miliage and fuel consumption ? its the same comparing portable versus performance.....
there are lots out there in terms of portable.... and battery life . performace laptop aren't build for battery life but purely performance like bugatti veyron .... which u can take anywhere conviniently.......
Dell recently acquired Alienware.
