I personally think the delay has little all to do with the coding/development side of things - after all, it's the consumer side that's being delayed, not the actual final (or 'gold') release of the product. If Microsoft find delaying their product from general release until the new year is all fine and dandy in a business perspective - Then who are we to argue? If you were in the position they were, no doubt strategic thinking is of upmost priority.
