Remember that
20-inch XPS Mobile Concept PC
(pictured) Dell was showing off at CES? Well, a tipster who claims to "work with Dell" just sent us specs for
a new Dell XPS M2010 which look damn close to what we saw on the floor back in January -- hell, it even matches-up with
the "M2010" we saw in the properties dialog. Ok, we have no way of authenticating whether or not our tipster
really is what s/he claims but we've been expecting some
20-inch widescreen beasts
to hit soon and with Dell
promising "more to come," well, they've done
stranger
things right? Now according to our source, this 18-pound media hog lays a massive 2.9 x 18.5 x 15.0-inch footprint
to encase that 20.1-inch WSXGA (1680 × 1050) display. It throws 24-bit audio out its 8 x 4-ohm speakers plus 1 x
12-ohm subwoofer with internal amp and of course goes (unspecified) Intel Core Duo (the CES prototype ran a 2.1GHz Intel
T2600) and packs in ATI's new, high-performance Radeon Mobility X1800 graphics processor to pump those high-def capable
pixels out component, DVI (with HDCP), or TV-out ports. Rounding out the list is support for up to 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM, a
detachable Bluetooth keyboard, Bluetooth mouse, multi-format memory card reader, ExpressCard slot, and a 1.3 megapixel
Logitech cam built-in to the top of the display capable of 640x480 video capture at 30 fps with a 58 degrees field of
view. What, no WiFi? The specs list a date of "May 2006" which may or may not be the ship date -- no pricing
yet, but it ain't gonna be cheap. Oh Dell, why do you tease us so?
[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

first of all thank you engadget for blogging at all hours of the morning, This is the perfect study break from calculating the magnetic field inside of a solenoid
second thank you anonmous tipster for filling in the gaps in the gaps between the crApple rummor columns with a nicely made dell pc. Beautiful!
Resident Gamer @ Apr 7th 2006 6:24AM
not bad...looks llike a great space saver
Sooo tired. @ Apr 7th 2006 6:35AM
Ummm, am I the only one who finds this useless?
I mean the big screen.....ya. But do you really need a 20" portable screen? Isn't that what the projector is for?
and 18lbs? Wow. Have fun using that on an airplane or a commute hahaha. J/k I know it's not a commuter craptop. But still. Isn't that part of what a portable computer is all about? portability?
Oh well, Dell is screwed now anyway, since we have XP running on macs. Viva la BootCamp.
Wayde @ Apr 7th 2006 6:35AM
Now all they need is a handy leather carrying case...
JT @ Apr 7th 2006 6:42AM
I must agree that this is a false good idea, much like the mouse/phone. There are so many great laptops out there (mac and/or PC) and so many small desktop PCs, who's going to get something like that???
Landincoldfire @ Apr 7th 2006 6:44AM
Wow, 18 pounds is alot to take back and forth to the office everyday just for bragging rights.
mike @ Apr 7th 2006 6:44AM
*shudder..
so much for listening to your customers...
gawd....
the answer to the question nobody asked.. wait.. that was MS...
Gaming + Portable?! What??
Don't you know hardcore gamers don't leave the house?
Just focus on one kick ass desktop for gaming, your shareholders will appreciate you not wasting money and resources on 'experiments' like this piece of dung.

This was an Ailenware just a little while ago... everybody was gawking over the keyboard. Oh no!

Shouldn't someone just get a MacBook with xp on it if they want a good gaming pc laptop? My friend was running quake and unreal with all the settings maxed out amazingly fast. Go Boot Camp! =P
Vicente @ Apr 7th 2006 7:05AM
I think it has a good design with really good specs, I really don't think this is supposed to replace a laptop, this is just a desktop replacement that is esay to take with you.

That didn't take long. Way to go.. wait for me!
(Getting an iBook in a few months.. Leopard launch, that is.. )
Schmack @ Apr 7th 2006 8:14AM
The XPS line already serves a niche market (gamers) so it would seem this targets a niche within a niche (lan parties).
From a business perspective, I could see value in this as a workstation for employees that don't necessarily travel, but occasionally work from home.
TRRosen @ Apr 7th 2006 8:17AM
Sooooooo.... its a iMac With a handle.....Dell innovation at its finest.
TeleCustom @ Apr 7th 2006 8:26AM
That handle might come in handy when it behaves like a typical Dell and you feel the need to have a Discus competition.
Jordan @ Apr 7th 2006 8:51AM
Did you mean watt instead of ohm? :)
SofaKing @ Apr 7th 2006 8:58AM
I think a lot of people are missing the point of a PC like this. Many notebook users rarely if ever even move their notebooks! I currently use a dell 17" notebook and love the damn thing, though it rarely leaves my desk.
The fact that I can stash it away when necessary, like the compact form factor and lack of cables running around, like that it's nearly silent, and can still pack it up and take it with me when the need arises.
The desktop PC paradigm is quickly dieing. So this thing is a 20" monster, as long as the price is within reason I bet they'll sell plenty of them.
peter @ Apr 7th 2006 9:10AM
great to see not that many people one wants one.
ill wait for dell to come down in price and buy it with 40-50% off coupon. '
btw how is the Mobility X1800 compared with the 7800 gtx?
PC Olympian @ Apr 7th 2006 9:11AM
TeleCustom, a discus does not have a handle. I believe you meant to refer to a throwing hammer. I personally like to shot put my Dells through closed 4th story windows.
Thomas Ricker @ Apr 7th 2006 9:13AM
Jordan, nope I meant 4-ohm, that's right off the specs we received. I'm no audiophile, but I understand that 4-ohm speakers are generally used in situations (like car audio) where systems are restricted to low voltages (like running off battery) -- a lower ohm (impedence) generates more current which means more power. 8ohm speakers are found in home systems where there is plenty of voltage in the mains.
Nathan Weinberg @ Apr 7th 2006 9:25AM
Add Windows Vista and a detachable Sideshow device to the package, and I'll buy it no matter the price.
If you can't handle an 18-pound laptop, maybe its time to hit the gym?
Rob @ Apr 7th 2006 9:35AM
#3, who's gonna shell out big cash and lug around projector around with them if a 20" screen is what they need? Or was that sarcasm?
I think it's possible that some people who want a big screen, don't need a laptop but sometimes need to move their computer might find this appealing.
Big tip of the hat to #12... Add a handle to an iMac to make it portable! What a great after-market business idea!
Yuri Walikw @ Apr 7th 2006 9:40AM
ummmm Nobody wants Dell computers anymore. Go Boot Camp!
Schmack @ Apr 7th 2006 9:46AM
I'm assuming most commenters are tech nuts (why else would you be here?), but I'm starting to wonder if there is any product announcement that would get some of you excited? If I were to go by Engadget comments alone, every new product is worthless.
I constantly hear how Dell's products are boring, no innovation, etc. I think it's cool to see them taking some risks and possibly create a whole new product sector. Come to think of it, has Dell ever done that?
ugo @ Apr 7th 2006 9:52AM
Dude.. I dunno why u folks are tripping. if I have to lug this around once every 6 months for my LAN parties.. I don't see why I would be complaining when everyone else will be carrying a desktop and monitor.
A true gamer's kit with hopefully no performance compromises..
OMAC @ Apr 7th 2006 10:57AM
Wow you are a brave man Zack, calling Apple 'Crapple'. I did that once on this board and not only got ripped by some of the other posters but the author as well (not this particular author though). What made it funny was that I was told I was being immature and worse for using the term Crapple when there were others using deragetory terms for Microsoft (M$) and Sony ($ony), yet those posters remained flame free, even by the author.
As far as this PC goes, it is the Yin to the UMPCs Yang. I don't think portability is its niche. I think it is a veiled attempt to go after the fashion concious PC users.
Steve Jobs Sucks A S S! @ Apr 7th 2006 11:53AM
I love how people say that Dell is just copying crApple on this. Even though it was Gateway who innovated the all-in-one PC, but of course everyone thinks it was crApple, 'cause they follow the hype.
Anyway, I think Dell's got a winner on their hands here. This isn't meant to have on your lap while sitting on the plane. This is a mobile desktop. I have a 17-inch laptop, and I hardly EVER move it, so this thing is gonna appeal to the gaming crowds, as well as anyone who simply wants the ability to move their powerful desktop easily whenever they need.
This is a sweet design by Dell, much better than anything crApple has ever done, much more well thought out.
steve @ Apr 7th 2006 12:14PM
I have a 12" laptop for mobility and a 24" display on my desktop. They both have their places. I can't imagine using a tiny 20" screen on my desktop anymore and am looking at 30" screens.
This strikes me as a bad compromise. If you hardly ever move it why not get something serious.
ryan @ Apr 7th 2006 1:55PM
#24, a 20" screen is not tiny considering most people I know use 15-17" monitors that came with their computers. I'll bet the majority of the population will look at a 20" screen and be surprised by how large it is.
x23 @ Apr 7th 2006 2:49PM
"23. I love how people say that Dell is just copying crApple on this. Even though it was Gateway who innovated the all-in-one PC, but of course everyone thinks it was crApple, 'cause they follow the hype."
well. Gateway wasn't even formed until 1985. the original Macintosh all-in-one came out in 1984. the Lisa preceded it in 1983. the Kaypro II and Osbourne both preceded the Apple models by a year or so as well.
if nothing else... when lambasting others about not knowing computer history... you know... you could always make sure you even have clue one about what you are talking about. just a suggestion.
Echo_ @ Apr 7th 2006 6:12PM

i think he was talking of the more mordern all in ones (mid 90s)
btw this is meant as a desktop replacement not a super portable laptop nubs

AutoDas @ Apr 7th 2006 6:46PM
where can I get just the keyboard?
retired_dragon @ Apr 8th 2006 1:23AM
Hey, I think it looks pretty sexy compared to the rest of Dell's line...it's great to so see Dell come out with something different.
graeme @ Apr 9th 2006 8:00AM
Am I having a flashback? Isn't this just a new version of what used to be known as a "luggable" (the pre-cursor to the laptop)?
the ninja @ Apr 9th 2006 4:11PM
ok yah... it's nice, and it'll be pricey... but HOW pricey... this could be the perfect solution for me as I'll be moving to Japan in a few months. I'm a gamer, but it's rather expensive to ship my desktop, not only that, it takes a long time for it to arrive! If I could get one of these and just tote it with me, that'd be perfect!!
But seriously, how much? (best guess?)
ablast2bme @ Apr 10th 2006 9:20AM
Well, I think that dell is striving to meet customers demands. The dell xps 2010 looks like a great product, it might not be what everyone would want but i would surely buy one if the price is resonable. I think it is the perfect size for what i would use it for. As for dell as a company, there the best!!!
joel @ Apr 10th 2006 2:16PM
I agree that it would be perfect for a desktop that needs to be moved occasionaly...I've had to throw my desktop in my car plenty of times.
Also, I know people that would use this as a full-time laptop hands down
mmm @ Apr 24th 2006 12:11AM
where is the dvd drive?
Noman @ Apr 26th 2006 10:23AM
The DVD drive is in the middle of the system, underneath the ring in the middle of the case in the picture on the left. When you press the eject button on the strip, the tray lifts up, giving you access to the slotload DVD+/-RW drive.
deez @ Apr 28th 2006 4:25PM
has anyone heard anything specific about the shipping/availability? I called dell and they claimed no information on it at all....yeah right. :D
ezmac @ May 6th 2006 12:19AM
Just saw one of these first hand. You have to see it to understand the greatness. 20.1 inch hi def. and it has wifi.
Cornezy @ May 8th 2006 12:30PM
How have you seen it first hand? When is it's release then? Sometime this month I am feeling. I feel it is coming out the end of this week, after E3!!?!?!? :D or maybe I am just dreaming ): Enlighten me, thanks!
anno @ May 11th 2006 2:12PM

Jmi Akinshilo @ May 14th 2006 11:52PM
How much will it cost cuz im willing to ditch my toshiba laptop for the right price!
Cornezy @ May 18th 2006 5:46PM
What is the starting price for it in europe? What does that convert to in U.S dollars. The m1710 came out the same time as europe so chances are it iwll follow suit. (: But june 16th is very far away ):
