Dell's $10K XPS 600 Renegade sold out
If
you've been saving your pennies for one of Dell's $10,000 XPS 600 Renegade computers, you can stop now and spend the
cash on something else (like, maybe, an Alienware box). Dell has
announced that the luxe gaming rig is already sold out, after less than a month on the
market. Of course, the Renegade was always listed as a "Limited Edition" box, and Dell was a little coy about
what that actually meant. We figure they probably made about 10, and Michael Dell picked up at least three of those for
his own collection, and gave two more to Nelson Gonzalez and Alex Aguila. The other five? Our guess is that they burst
into flames from that "factory overclocked" processor (or the paint job), and are now being refurbished for
sale via Dell's outlet site for a mere $8,999.

but is it vista ready? haha
POS!
Wow, isn't this news from two weeks ago?
Oh is it cool to hate Dell on engadget? I want to make sure I get it right so I don't lose my geek cred.
Yeah, but can it play pong?

Don't worry. It's cool to hate Dell wherever you go.
On a somewhat related note: My wife recently picked up an eMachine *cringe*
Er.. isn't this like, old news? Really old?
Unless they sold out _again_ or something.
people's stupidity never ceases to amaze me
Instead of calling it the 'Renegade' they should have called it 'buyer's remorse'.
The quad SLI does not give any performance increase for single display applications. If you dual displays, two of the video cards will render all of the graphics on the first display, the other two cards for the other display.
So unless you are running two games simultaneously, one on each display, the Renegade will run the same as if you were only running with two video cards.
Does the $10k include photographer who will take awesome pics of it so you can brag about it to your friends?
I wouldn't take a Dell for FREE! 10K for a wincrap running POS? LOLOLLLLLLLLL
LOL @ #2
Definitely old news. I remember reading that they were sold out before they were actually ready to ship. 30 or so of them total, one did go to Michael Dell, one was kept aside for a promotional sweepstakes of some sort, and (most of) the rest were shipping.
Chiablo #10:
I believe you are forgetting one aspect:
extrememly high resolution monitors. I believe this is where having quad-SLI comes in handy.
Not only is this old news, wasn't the fact they were sold out posted in the comments on the release of the Renegade?
My question is, who has 10K to put towards a computer?
Wow my faith in People with money and no sense of tack has been restored.
Ron,
You'd be surprised how many rich people there are out there who could make such a purchase without thinking twice.
Pfft, call me when they put mac osx on it. Then call me again when they put xp inside the osx os. Then call me again when they fit it inside an NES.
Upon first read, the article seemed to start with 'save your penis...', which would be ironically appropriate, considering the sense of inadequacy one would need in order to justify buying this ghastly mostrosity. :-P
Ok My question is who is really that stupid to buy a computer for $10,000 dollars... are u serious?
What in the world are u going to run on it that you couldn't run on the $1,699 dell.
Dude your getting a dell and you just over paid for by $8,301 dollars.... OWNED!!! It's an overclocked heatwave.
It's not even water-cooled... LoL..
you could have used that money on THREE HDTV's with 1080p with one for your not overpriced computer (the $1,699 one)and two for your PS3... since it can handle dual 1080p output.
or put the thrid one on the X360 for those long nights of Halo 3...
It all depends on your choice of toys. While I could afford one I don't need that much machine to do what I do. The price/need ratio is too high. Which is probably good since they're out. ;)
It's no more absurd than many of the limited edition swarovski crystal incrusted, celeb signed, artiste created nonsense gadgets out there. Actually now that I think of those examples this one seems less absurd.
Besides the joy of overclocking is doing it yourself. I only glanced at the specs but it doesn't say if it's liquid cooled?
I think this is one of the funniest engadget posts in a while. Well done.
If I ever spend that much on an already built computer, I'd buy a Falon Northwest. Dell customer support? Anyone?
And you guys claim Apple users spend too much?
Sheesh.
Quad SLI? whats the point of it, soon they'll come out with card that can preform the same as all of those cards together, and woulden't you rather build your own computer for 10k?
To Baumann, complaining about emachines, my server is a sweet 466is, an amazing little celeron that has been running since 99, a good deal for 499 canadian back then. Needs a new fan now, but other then that it has been incredibly trouble free. Also, runs linux like a dream.
what a nice apple-fun-boy reunion!
For all the crap Dell gets, they do turn out some quality at times. My Inspiron XPS2 is a wonderful little (big) laptop. I have zero regrets about buying it.
So flame on, haters. Flame on.
This is the best story Engadget has ever released. Oh man I'm still laughing my butt off! LOL!!! I'd believe it if Dell only made 10 boxes!
If you really want to update your Renegade ownership status level to solidify your position as a complete and utter tool; purchase this and only use it to play the card game solitaire on it.
@#12
u could take it and give it to someone u don't like ;)
10K?
10K???!!!!
that's alot...ish... for a dell
Funny post. There's lots of people with money to burn out there, and with only ten of these, it figures it's sold out. It must be like buying an exclusive sports car for some people.
"they probably made about 10, and Michael Dell picked up at least three of those for his own collection, and gave two more to Nelson Gonzalez and Alex Aguila. The other five?"
the other five were gifted to the race of men, who above else desired POWER.. But they were all of them deceived, for deep in the land of Dell, Michael Dell, in secret forged the ultimate XPS, one to control all others..
it's all benn written
for people with more $$ than brains.
lol at #36 wins best comment in my eyes :)
i have one and it really loads my email login page fast at millionare24.com
Products (and promotions) like this are great marketing tools for companies who make them. People may not buy THIS PARTICULAR COMPUTER, but it adds "image" and brand appeal to the Dell name (as a maker of fine blah blah) and it creates 'buzz' and traffic and loyalty to the Dell brand. Regardless of our thoughts of the company's products, the idea is to get Joe Consumer to relate to the Dell brand - ideally, favourably.
So, it's not so much who buys it. Even if they sold NONE, what they'd gain here is many headlines in tech news sites all over the world for just being one of the most priciest pieces of gear out (if nothing else). You can't buy that type of publicity.
So, in the end, despite the pros/cons of the brand involved, despite all discussion of value for money, exclusivity, whatever, THEY WIN because of all the discussion and buzz they caused on fanboy/hateboy sites.
Like this one. And you all help build it for them. Mission accomplished for Dell. That is their intent.
Ooh. Good point, tekdroid. If I had 10,000 dollars to spend on a computer, I'd definately be building my own, but I know by around the $5,000 mark, I'd be pressed to find anything else I could possibly need or put in my computer. Maybe pay for a professional case painting? No idea. I just spent $3500 building a custom computer, and I there were only a few aspects where I didn't go overboard on. However, I have to give it to Dell on the displays. The 30" screen sounds lovely. I bought the 24" and I couldn't be happier with it.
