As
expected, Apple has unveiled the new flagship of the MacBook Pro line, a 17-inch, 1680x1050, 2.16GHz Core Duo model. The new model comes standard with 1GB of RAM, an 8X dual-layer burner and a 120GB 5400 RPM hard drive, along with a FireWire 800 port, for $2,799. Maximum RAM is 2GB, and Apple also offers a 100GB 7200 RPM drive as an option. At the same time, Apple has removed the 17-inch PowerBook G4 from its lineup, leaving the 12-incher as the sole remaining option for customers willing to settle for last year's model (or who want a smaller-footprint portable). The pricing on the 17-incher actually matches that of the 2.16GHz 15-inch model, which makes this one a relative bargain -- especially given its larger hard drive, FireWire 800 and dual-layer burner. As
previously noted, the launch was timed to coincide with the opening of the National Association of Broadcasters conference, which begins today. More pictures on the flip side.
Sorry, when it comes right down to it when I pull my MBP out in class EVERYONE looks at it. It is obviously a premium machine. I am willing to pay 1000 extra for the far superiour design and construction. This one doesn't blend into the crowd. Face it. Kmart makes shirts that are just as durable and serve their purpose just as well as something from Dolce and Gabbana doesnt mean people stop buying D&G, you get what I am saying?
#37: same here in Europe. I wrote to Apple a few weeks ago and they just kept sending me to "Find your local dealer" site, if I wasn't happy with the prices. They couldn't provide me with a reason why must everyone ouside the US pay 27 to 33% more than US citizens do.
So if anyone knows, pleas explain it to me, because I just dan't get it.
Look people, Mac's will never compete in price with the likes of Dell and HP. People will still buy them and Apple will still make a lot of dough. My wife has a Dell laptop which I occasionally use and maintain. I have a Windows desktop that I put together myself. I use Windows at work.
I just bought my first Mac, a MacBook Pro. Do I feel like I wasted a lot of money? Hell no! Would I buy another one? Hell yes! In fact, I'll probably replace my desktop with a Power Mac some day. That's what it's all about. Whether you want to admit it or not, Macs are value added devices. It's not just about how much hard drive space it has or the resolution of the screen or speed of the processor...it's the entire package all the way down to how the box it comes in is packed. When you get one it's impossible not to notice Apple's strong focus on the details in ALL areas.
Let's make a real comparison:
Apple MacBook Pro:
2.16Ghz Intel Core Duo
100GB @ 7200RPM HD (or 120GB @ 5400RPM)
1 GB RAM
Airport
Bluetooth 2.0
1680x1050 17" display
256MB ATI Radion Mobility X1600
Remote control for Front Row
iSight
With Education discount (Please don't tell me you don't know how to take advantage of one of these):
$2838
Dell:
Option A:
XPS M1710 with upgrades to closely spec the MBP:
2.16GHz Intel Core Duo
100GB HD @ 7200 RPM
1GB RAM
1920x1200 17" display
256MB GForce Go 7900
DL DVD Burner
Remote Control for MS Media Center Edition
Bluetooth 2.0
WiFi a/b/g
3 Year Service plan (regular one, not plus)
XPX 1710 was excluded from coupons so...
$3603= $765 MORE than MBP
Option B:
Inspiron E1705
17" 1440x900 display (or $119 more for 1920x1200)
1GB RAM
100GB HD @ 7400RPM
DL DVD Burner
256MB GeForce GO 7800
Remote Control for MS Windows Media Center Edition
Wifi a/b/g
Bluetooth 2.0
3 Year Service Plan
With Discount: $2016. Sounds like a great deal but here's the kicker: Preliminary Ship Date: 6/28/2006!!!!
Sorry Dell Fan Boys, but this is NOT a viable option to compare with.
Moving on to HP...
Hate to break it, but HP DOES NOT have a comparable model. Alot of the features can come close and you get to about $2000 but there are serious shortfalls. For one, the RAM isn't upgradeable like the MBP or Dell. You either choose 1GB or drop an extra $200 for 2GB. Also, the 256 MB video card is only the NVIDIA GO 7500 which doesn't compare to either Dell's Or Apple's offerings. The Bluetooth is only 1.0 (may not be a big deal for most people). If you try to configure one yourself, you'll get about the same dollar/performance ratio as the MBP but nothing close enough to specs.
Lastly, Lenovo...
Sorry, but NO 17" options here. The closest:
1400x1050 14" display
128MB ATI Radeon Mobility X1400
100GB HD @ 5400 RPM
4X DL DVD Burner (all above options are 8x)
1GB RAM
WiFi (a?/b/g)
Bluetooth 1.0
3 year service plan
All for $2297
By far the WORST value of them all. I hope you're not going to ask me why I think so.
But there are things that make the Apple model much more attractive:
First, only 1" thick and only 6.8 pounds making this a truly portable 17". No other company (with the possible exception of superly overpiced Sony) can come close to that.
None of the other options include a digital camera for simple video confrencing.
The MBP has the most powerful video card option within the price range. While Dell does a more powerful video card available, that model comes at a huge cost.
The software package that comes with it is a huge value. With all the other options, you'd have to buy separate software packages to compete for things such as DVD creation, photo organizing and creating your own movies. Sorry, I've yet to see one good alternative to Garage Band.
Whoever thinks that a backlit keyboard is a gimmick simply has no idea what they're talking about. How about you try using a keyboard in complete darkness. Sure, you can tell someone to Learn2Type, but even people who type generally have to look at the keyboard to press any of the function keys as it does not have a standard postion on all keyboards.
The MagSafe power adapater, while not a deal breaker by any means, is a really nice plus that everyone will like.
How about the 2 finger scrolling capability of the touchpad? No one cared to mention the incredible convenience of that.
All in all, the MacBook Pro is not only a worthwhile deal when compared to the likes of Dell and Lenovo, it's a machine that has capabilities that no other manufacturer does and a design that's definitely worth the price. Even if the Dell and Apple were almost identical in specs and price, the MBP wins hands down simply because of Dells overuse of junky looking plastic and bulkiness.
I love bimmers. I love macs. but in my oppinion it's kinda useless to use one to compare the other. I can drive one. The other I use to type on. Interesting. Though I must say I'm tryin real hard to hold out for either a 13 widescreen pro or the new 64 bit intel processors due out sometime in september.
Holla.
WTF! Man, am I the only one who sees what a hustle these 17 inch laptops are? Mac is just trying to maximize it's LCD factory. Why do they continue to put out this awkwardly large laptop and then choose NOT to include an extended key board? There's so much unused space around the same crappy keyboard you get on the 12" and 15". They're too cheap to fabricate a good extended keyboard for this dumb hunk a junk. You can't even find a powerbook sleeve to fit these things. Man, it hurts! This isn't the flagship Powerbook. It's the consumer getting a half-ass product from a manufacturer trying to move parts!
same here in Europe.
==========
Well, part of the difference may be that in Europe sales tax is included in retail prices, whereas in the US it is added on at checkout. Don't know all the local Euro-sales tax rates, but in Sweden it is over 20%.
One point that everyone has missed is that if you keep your Apple laptop for 2-3yrs and then sell, it will not have devalued at the same rate a HP/Leno?Acer would have.
So the initial price might be offset by the resale value.
Having owned PCs and notebooks from a variety of vendors (Sony, Toshiba, IBM, Dell, Apple) as well as having gone through the phase of building and upgrading my own PCs, I have to say that the Apple hardware and software *is* better *and* worth the price difference, at least for me.
For me, the differences are the little things. For example, my PowerBook sleeps and wakes faster than my Toshiba, and it reconnects to my wireless network almost instantly whereas my Toshiba takes a good 20 seconds or so. My dual G4 1.25ghz MDD, despite being a few years old, still feels snappy and doing things like installing a second HD are incredibly easy given how thoughtful and elegant the internals of the box are designed.
Most importantly, things just *work*. When I had my Sony VAIO a few years back and my DV video camera, I thought doing digital video editing would be easy given Sony's position in that market. But finding a video editing package that worked with the built in firewire port was a nightmare - nothing every worked the way it should. But with my G4, importing DV is effortless and iMovie and iDVD are as intuitive as can be.
Seriously, when I first switched to Apple I was incredibly disappointed that after 20 minutes of set up there was nothing left to do. I was used to tinkering with my windows boxes, updating drivers, evaluating different apps to see which ones worked, and so on, and there was no need to do that any more. I find that I use my mac much less than I previously used my windows box, not because it's less powerful but because I'm not wasting time just getting the system to behave well. That is Apple's advantage and Microsoft's curse. Microsoft is encumbered by legacy and by an endless supply of 3rd party hardware and drivers that simply don't interoperate the way they should. But when you control the hardware and software like Apple, things naturally come together and its well worth the premimum.
To those comparing a BMW to a Civic:
Would you buy a BMW if they took precisely the SAME Civic engine, the same Civic suspension, the same Civic transmission, put in a rear video camera and backlit steering wheel, and stuffed all this in a BMW shell ?
What if your BMW came off the same assembly line as the Civic ? (Asus/Quanta and others make most laptops, including Apple)
You all miss the Point. Mac user's by Macs because we love them. We can afford to buy a less expensive PC but don't.
Why would a person pay more for something when they know they could pay less. The same reason I avoid fast food. Fast food is cheeper but I choose to eat food that is good for me. Am I stupid to pay more for healthier food? If you disagree with me you probably have a FAT %#@.
If you stop reading this thread and price out the Dell less the discount it is more expensive. It is true after the coupons the dell is less than the Mac Book, But it is not even available until sometime in June. Looks like Dell is trying to rase awareness about the Note book and will at some point remove the discount.

"No Firewire ports (MBP has both FW400 and FW800)
IEEE 1394 port (MBP doesn't seem to have it)"
lol, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE1394
And thats why i couldn't log onto the Apple store site at 12AM EST +10 Australia time. I knew something fishy was going on~! =)
Please.
The spec'ing back and forth only points to one conclusion: Dell and Apple are so close you can't even compare them properly. So, given hardware is nearly comparable (though arguably, the MacBook has iSight and remote, and unmatched features like the Magsafe, FW 800, et al.), then the differentiator is: Mac OS X. Those who use it and use it for a living pushing multi-terabyte imaging, audio and video (like most of it), and more importantly, compare with use of Win XP and its variants for testing purposes, will simply say:
YOU HAVE NO CLUE TALKING ABOUT MACS. GO AWAY.
US$.02 Non-refundable.
love,
io
...
call me when they make a 12 inch macbookpro. thats what i am waiting for
I don't understand why the 15.4" macbook costs MORE than the 17". Upgrade the processor and the hard drive to 17" MBP specs and you are $100.00 higher (and thats with a slower superdrive too) I'm looking to buy but I have a 17" gen2 XPS Dell notebook now thats too bulky to carry around easily.
Get a Dell if you please, I'm glad you found what you are looking for. I'll stick with OSX. Way worth the premium IMHO.
It is funny that everyone is complaining about the price of Apple hardware and no one complains about the price of Windows software, a quick look on Amazon UK shows XP Pro to be 233.99 and OSX to be 86.99 even the cut down home edition of XP is more than OSX at 94.99 now who would want to pay over doubble the price for an antiquated, virus prone piece of software when for a bargain price you can have a modern, safe and reliable operating system.... No Brainer
Fanboys! Hush for a second.
Why the hell are we fighting over laptop costs? Every knows MBP's are overpriced (yet, i'm still saving for one, lol), but who cares? For some people its simplicity is better, and for some people price becomes the factor as they don't need the simplicity.
Point is, stop being fanboys slapping each other continuously.
Its a computer. Honestly, computers are meant for work, so these things don't have to be anywhere near as powerful. I mean, who's job is it to play Half-Life 2 and do advanced video editing on a laptop?
Stop slapping yourselves,
Jeffler
(Pro-Apple, but anti-fanboyism)
I just sent Apple a kind letter about how I just purchased my 15" MBPro, and that it was a rushed decision because of school and work, etc. It was customized build to order, hard drive and such but as of yesterday they said it was fine if I sent the difference between the two models (about $300 in my case) along with the MacBook Pro, they'll ship my 17" within 5 days :D :D :D shows Apple's true generosity
For all you PC whiners:
MACBOOK PROs are NOT OVERPRICED.
Here's some of the added benefits of a Mac...
-BUILT in camera
-Software (iLife, Developer Tools, etc)
-Backlit keyboard
-SUDDEn motion sensor (not many pcs have these...)
-NON-PLASTIC case
-1"... ONE FREAKING INCH THICK.
-Apple service. They frequently replace parts for free, sometimes even refund your entire purchase. They just let me exchange my 15"MBPro for this one. Yes that's right.
-Superior OS. No viruses, adware, spyware, internet explorer (web developer's hell), annoying messages at system startup (look in your XP startup tray or whatever... "Want to help make Office Better?" that crap)
-Custom video card and CPU ( Apple had both products custom made for their products, to work very nicely together. Perfect noise control, and more)
-NOISE limits. Macs these days are much quiter than modern PCs. YOu max out those Dells like you were, you're gonna have a construction zone in your lap
-Media card slots? Oh please. I'm a web/graphics designer and photographer, I have never felt the need for this. WHy take the card out of the camera and put it into the computer, when you can plug a cable into both and get faster speed. It's the same amount of work, with less slots that could get water in them
Ok just a few things i'd like to throw out there.
1. Stop being so goddam short termist in your thinking. Fair enough I will accept you can get a fairly comparitively specced dell/h.p/cookie cutter beige/black/silver (wow these PC designers are getting adventurous with their AHEM... design) Box for less than a new MBP but in the long term how long is a PC running M$ Windoze really going to last before viruses/spyware/malware ruin your computer and you have to start all over again with brand new hardware. A friend of mine well and truly in the Windoze camp mentioned to me in conversation about how fast his brand new Acer Laptop seemed because of how slow his desktop had become because of said treats. I could only laugh. I am certain that thanks to a lack of attacks and apples auto updates my 3 1//2 year old emac is now running faster than when we bought it.
2. Good design, pay peanuts get monkeys. I know this sort of thing is a matter of opinion but i really do believe it to be fact that you will not find a more beutifully designed laptop than the MBP. And whatever anyone says that counts for a whole lot. A laptop is a device you use in public. Anyone who want's to argue find me a pic of a laptop equally well designed by which i mean not just a nicer screen more function/hot keys I mean something equally beautiful to the eyes and to the touch, no stickers, laser engraving etc. Hell i'm willing to bet that apple put more thought into the packaging that their competitiors put into their laptop case designs.
3.OSX, iLife, Boot Camp. You can't deny apples software pedigree.
" They couldn't provide me with a reason why must everyone ouside the US pay 27 to 33% more than US citizens do. So if anyone knows, pleas explain it to me, because I just dan't get it. "
As another reader stated. In the USA, every item in a retail store or online store is priced without sales tax. This makes it easier for stores to make nationaly printed sales fliers, as the % of sales tax differs from town to town and state to state.
Whereas in Europe everything is sold sales tax included. What you see on the sticker in the store is what you pay. Many times the sales tax in Europe is 25% on "luxury items" like electronics & cars, less than 10% on food items, ... Have a look at your country's tax schedule.
So in case of global retailer X, you may find that the price in the US is $2000 excl tax => $2140 incl 7% sales tax. Whereas in EU the price is 2500 incl 20% tax.
But, before you say everything is cheaper in the US because of taxes, keep in mind that the US is different about social benefits, health care costs, etc. The same reason fuel costs less at the pump than in EU nations, which have 80-90% taxes on fuel.
On my last trip into Europe I expected higher prices on electronics & computer components. I walked into a few shops. Only to find that the prices were on par for many things. US price excl tax = EU price incl tax. This before I factored in the exchange rate of my dollars.
Were the lower prices in the EU due to the dollar < euro rate (at about 20%?) which means that European retailers pay less for the same crate of electronics than Americans do?
So, it is not the easiest to compare overall. Though I've heard it before in Apple's case that they use the same price for their systems regardless of exchange rates. If the machine's suggested retail price is $1000 USD before taxes it will be 1000EU before taxes. Hence the 20+% markup you mention. But that is not due to Apple. That's the local government getting income from retail sales to fund the government.
As for the exchange rate. Well, you can say it would only be fair if Apple would adjust the sales price for conversion rates ... but that means the price of machines should go up and down every day, week, ... which would not be easy to manage. Right now with the weak dollar we technically pay less for computer x. If the dollar is high, we'll pay more and it would be cheaper to pay for it in Euros.
You guys crack me up! I don't care about the price of the macbookpro, I will gladly pay double that just for what I KNOW I will get from it, the OS. Face it, you whine about the price because you cant afford it, period. If you really dont like it, you wont whine about the price. I deal with pple like this all the time, complaining about the price of my BMW. Ok, it is my BMW, not yours. You think I am a sucker for buying one, fine. But I know if you had the money you will buy one too! I own a recording studio and trust me, I will NEVER use a windows based computer as my DAW (digital audio workstation), because, its just not stable enough for me to chance losing my work overnight. I net over a grand a week on just music production, trust me $3000 is not too much to pay for a stable OS. And yes, the dells may have more screen size, better grapic cards and cost less, I still wont touch them for anything serious. Web-surfing, wordprocessing, sure. But, anything "money-generating" serious, no, thank you.
I Want my iMac Lap (formerly iBook)!
Yes, it will be caled the iMac Lap.
the "i" in front will still seperate the Consumer and Pro Lines.
The Book will be Changed in favor of Lap and Steve Jobs (during his presentation) will say thier done with "Book(s)" with additional evidence of being thru with "Book(s)" shown by not being able to read todays "eBook(s)" or "eNovel(s)" (or whatever you call them)
The Colors that people are predicting with the launch of what some call the "MacBook" (in reality "iMac Lap") only be Black & White, similar to "iPods".
Also the "iMac (Core Duo)" Desktop will come out in a shade of Black to Match the laptop Line.
However the former "PowerMac" Box will eventually be call the "Mac Cube Pro". or "Mac Box Pro." Think about it.
Also in Unlrealted News, Apple is coming out with what's known today an "iPhone" (wil actually be called "iCell") along with an "AppleCell Pro" (actually called--Wait for it--
"iNewton"
a "PDA-Like device actually designed by Apple that will (at first) only be compatible with the New "AppleWireless" Cell phone service (not to be Confused with "Airport Wireless" (Wi-Fi)
All of this wil happen in a Sequence starting in June 2006 @ the WWDC. and ending in June 2007.
Want a New Mac Wait a While & see what Apple Brings!"
The problem with these components is when you are getting that T2600 Core Duo chip, the wholesale price is already very high, so the consumer has to pay the difference and the mark-up price. Also anyone who keeps saying how they can get a identical configurated Dell is comparing apples (no pun intended) to oranges. You can't simply buy a Dell and buy OS X (at least not now). Plus, there is a durability issue with Dells. They are not strong. The screen is poorly protected. A bit pressure on the back of the screen and easily damage the screen. That is not true with the Apples. The screen is far better protected. Also support on Dells are out-sourced to India. Not being racist or anything, but I never am able understand what the tech support reps are saying. The last time I called about my Axim, the rep took 5 tries to say "exchange server". Maybe you might not have problems, but some people might want to call to ask about a feature they don't understand. Yes, if you have XPS then the support is great, but you have pay a premium for the XPS which has a price comparable to Apple's. Apple support is very knowledgeable. Don't forget the main buyer of this new product is not the average PC user; its the Apple enthusiast who already is comfortable with the Apple way of pricing and appeal.
Honestly, despite all the greatness of the these Apples, I will soon buy the new Lenovo Thinkpad T60p. Unfortunately, the similar configuration on the Thinkpad is more than that of the Apple MacBook Pro. Does that make the Apple the better buy? No. Thinkpads are know for there reliability and durability, that is unmatched by many. Yes, you can get the identical configuration of the Dell for maybe half the price, but its not always the components that one pays for. Its also service, quality, and brand.
Finally, if you don't like the components, don't buy it. Especially don't bitch about how this is too expensive. Its called the flagship product for a reason. Buy the flagship Dell (XPS) and it will be just as expensive if not more.
I got my 15" Macbook just before easter, I love it. I would pay more for it and yes I do feel superior to windows users now.
They are far better.
Dang, and I just got my 15"! Forget it, I'm going to wait to get the 30" MacBook Pro when it comes out...
Hey, I'm just here to ask about advice. Not to argue over what is overpriced and what is not. I am a PC user and for about 15 years at that. I'm never going to give up PC's but I'm switching to mac for my OWN reasons so shut up and leave that part alone. Anyway now that the new MBP 17" came out I have no idea which to get. The 15.4" was a pretty sweet deal, but I like a larger screen size. The only thing I really wish is for apple to put in a 2.0 GHz intel duo core in the 17" as well. So anyway, just some advice on which to get would be much appreciated.
PRICE PRICE PRICE... The Mac vs PC thing has been done to death and its the same stuff over and over. GET A CLUE: Anyone saying they can get an equivalent PC for X amount of dollars cheaper or more is missing some major things:
None of the posters above have actually compared any real specs. We hear things like I can get a 17" laptop for cheaper. 17" of what? Is the resolution, brightness, refresh rate, etc the same? Most of the time no. For those that its a yes, what is the bus speed on these piece of shit motherboards you are quoting? I bet you don't even know. Graphics cards.. same deal.. how much cache is on them? What are their EXACT specs? Even better.. benchmarks.
Check out sites like www.barefeats.com. They test macs and PCs in detail and show which machines are faster in each test. You'll notice something though.. none of the machines that beat the macs or come close are the cheap peices of junk people are referring to here.
My point is that people here are comparing apples to oranges.. no wait... piles of shit.
The PC world is used to being shitted on so they can't tell. Dell says we'll give you a 2GHz Intel chip for 1/2 the price of the mac, whoopee. What they don't tell you is they'll slap it on a motherboard whose bus speed is so slow it will choke the hell out of the performance of any of the other components, can't make use of faster latency ram - and is likely to break as soon as the warranty is up.
I bought my first mac 4 years ago when they swiched to open-source (a powerbook) and as a software developer have beaten on this machine for years and it has withstood impressive beatings and still works fine. I have been through more PCs in this time than I can count - none of which could make it through a single day without crashing.
I challenge any pro-windows users to a contest. We each put up $1000 so you put your money where you mouth is and not waste time. Now, heres the challenge: I use a PC and you use a mac for the duration of the contest. I can crash any PC (not this program has performed an illegal operation - but total lockup blue screen of death and/or reset - even upgraded to the latest version with all the patches) within a few minutes and just by using a simple text editor and internet explorer, and I bet you can't do the same with notepad and safari. If I win, I take the pot. If we both can crash each others systems we keep our own money, and if I can't and you can you get it. Fair enough?
The Macbook pro 17" is missing important features to make it a PRO laptop: at least 1920 x 1200 native LCD res., hd-dvd drive, a full size pcm-cia slot, a real scrolling two button mouse. Apple has always been on the cutting edge of technology I wonder what happened with this release. High Definition is here to stay and it's time for Apple to get on board!!!
Hello everyone my name is God don't laugh I blame my mother!
Anywho I'm not here to complain about macs or pc's but I will tell you both are good for different reasons.
I have had some many computer macs and pc's! I have a 17inch MacBook Pro with a glossy display. I use it for screenwriting, small amounts of film editing, adobe, creative arts including music. For my line of work it is worth the price of a no hassel machine.
PC's are ok too. Don't really like them but there are some good ones out there like alienware and sony's line. If I had to go back to a pc sony would be the only one.
And yes the price is higher but honestly you do get more on a mac. Remember I am on both sides here.
There are many Pro's and Con's with both.
Again the price is the largest concern!
Apple also is not meant for low class america no offense to anyone.
Its meant for hi industry/A-list communication companies that are willing to pay the extra dough for a OS and hardware they can count on. But if you have a the extra money give it a shot if you are up to it. I promise you won't be upset.
Also for gamers mac may not have a lot of games but they don't have a small list to choose from either. I play may games like HALO, UT, well lots of first person shooters. They run on the intel macs really well high fram rates.
Listen if you are into Music, Videos (movies), Photos, Games, Designing Websites, Blogging, or just wanting to have a easy to use operating system go with the Apple way. If not don't waste your money go with Dell or HP if you jest need something to help with documents for the office. Not to mention you all that don't need all that apple offers will save money.
One more this now that apple is able to run Windows and OS X it might be nice because you can use Windows for the office and Mac for the home. The best of both worlds. That way you won't need to computers laying around.
I'm not sure If I helped you in anyway. I am know way bi-est when it come to this subject even though I have a mac I like some PC's out there.
I will say I do have a BMW and Apple Hardware. But only now I will say BMW (Euro cars in general) are the best money can buy and I am a american.
I always get excited when people argue the whole Mac vs. PC thing. I own both an Inspiron 9400 and a Macbook pro. Both are very powerful machines, however there is no comparison whatsoever. They are like night and day.
