We really had gotten used to the boomerang, so we have to admit we felt something of a void when Sony confirmed last month that they were
yanking the prototype design and would unveil the real PS3 controller at E3. And unveil it they did, as part of the PS3 dog-and-pony show this evening. Yeah, we're kind of underwhelmed, too. Still, despite its resemblance to past Sony controllers, it does have some solid features, including X-Y-Z, pitch, roll, yaw and lateral motion detection, and Bluetooth for wireless play. And chances are the learning curve of switching from the PS2 controller to this one will be all of about five minutes.
Update: Sony has confirmed that the new controller will not have vibration functionality, unlike the Dual Shock, Dual Shock 2 and the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii controllers. They claim this has to do with interference of the motion sensing, but we have a sneaky feeling that this could have something to with those
lawsuits that started all that "boomerang" musing in the first place.
It's true the innovation is simply taking another person's idea and making it better, I have a hard time calling Sony's effort just that.
I suppose had they hinted during last years E3 that they were working on a big idea or something, that would have made me think they came up with it on their own, but sadly they didn't.
On top of that, it seems odd how they only company with a demo that showed off their sensor based controller was only given roughly 10 days (1). For all acounts, no one knew a moment before then of this amazing (sarcasm littly implied) innovation.
IMO, Sony realized they needed do something about Nintendo's idea just in case the Big N actually manages to pull off a surprise win with it's new controller. Of course, I imagine the whole motion control thing will mysteriously find little to no support if Wii fails horribly.
I should say as a last note, that while I do agree this is a case of some what of a blatant rip off, I am glad to see a traditional controller married with similar tech. This controller is less likely to alienate as many people as the Wii controller will (ie, hardcore gamers that have circle shaped indentations in their right thumb).

Dont u understand
well lets see
1. BLU_RAY CAN SUCK MY BALLS
2.SAME CONTROLLER EVERY TIME
3.SUPER HUGE PRICE
4.SONY SUCKS
The wii is cool so is the 360 {especially halo 3}
but ps3 is gay READ IT GAY
Okay, I had a long post drawn up for this, but I think I should just give it to you short & simple. Sonya is considered a thief, because Nintendo was so secretative about their controller in the beginning for reasons everyone thought was stupid. Yet, the minute that it's announce Sony does what everyone thought was as likely to happen as a snake learning to fly, and copy the idea. Yup, they come out with motion sensory, which though is just a pale imitation of the Wii ((I really hate that name)) ... it a imitation of it. Yeah, this technology is old, but it's still the fact of the matter about the motion sensory tilt.
Thus, this is what the outrage is about ... everyone wants to get information about the newest updates as soon as possible, but with the fear of thief that is not likely to happen. You want to know about the newest updates of Microsoft, well that is not going to happen if they are scared that Nintendo or Sony is going to steal it. IF the PS3 come up with something really revolutionary ..., and instead of knowing about it in 2006 ... you have to wait until it's just about to come out in 2008 .. who really lose?
Okay quick rant:
WTF, I like the boomarang, and I don't care about Rumble. What the fuck was it used for then a quick surprise sometimes when the thing actually jumped. I am not going to get PS3 anyway, because it's too expensive, and I know this might sound strange, but the Gamecube kind of brought me back to Nintendo. IF they will just add a stupid DVD player out of the box ... then I would have a real reason to buy Wii. Sorry waving my arms around like an idiot doen't seem like a lot of fun to me. Microsoft can just go to hell! Sorry, but after realizing that I can't even pick a X-box up ... I refuse to go out & buy a 360.
Thanks for reading my rant.
Not sure about the 3D stuff, but I am a little let down by the design. Interesting that there is a standard-looking USB port on there...wonder if I can plugin to my PC if someone builds a driver for it.
HALO 3 :D Whoooooo :D
Start calling it the dualshockless please. No rumble has to be the worst decision ever made. Sony said they haven't copied Nintendo, that they have been researching this for years. You've been researching this for years and this is all u come up with?? A 6 point axis system controller that doesn't even have rumble??? Pathetic pathetic pathetic. Go die sony. For the sheer fact that the controller doesnt have rumble I won't be buying it. I'm doing the Wii60 thing.
um, xbox 360, it has something that ps3 wont have, guess what? its called Halo 3. sure, the 360 doesnt have motion sensing crap, but who cares? who wants to sit playing a game waving your arms around while trying the slash some one with a sword? 360 also has xbox live, unified online play across all games, none of the ps2 crap that you have to create a new account for every game and not have a friends list. let alone some people were playing on dial up, games lag with cable and dsl, but wtf, dial up? sure the ps3 will have blu ray, but at what cost to the consumer? dual layer dvds that cost less than $10 are used for 360 games, the games are then sold for $60. blu ray discs are $20+, how much will games cost for it, factor in having to build plants to produce the blu ray discs, the extra hardware to make the games, ill bet youll be looking at $75 for a single game. well theres my rant
the ps3 controller may not hav ripped off the wii controller, but its not nearly as developed as the wii controller and cant do as much motion sensing gameplay features as the wii controller. and to top that,ps3 is gonna b at a higher price.
this sin't nothing revolutionary
my prediction
1. PS3
2. XBOX 360
3.Wii
Iain prediction is probably going to be correct based on current market standings. Analysts also anticipate this order. However, they see the Wii to gain the most market share out of the three while remaining third. Furthermore, with the gaming market's rapid growth all three companies will gain. Basically, it depends how much they earn in their respective positions. (Sony with there movies, bluray, gaming have the most to gain or lose)
The 360 controller is the greatest ever, and not having motion detection is great cause personally im not interested. The 360 is the perfect console for me. It's a complete package, sony can keep it's gimmicks.
In my professional opinion:
TEH PS3 WILL PWN ALL U n00bS!!!!1 ITS TEH CONSOLE FOR REAL G4MERZ
Give me one game that truly stands out for the ps2...AND FOR GODS SAKE IF YOU SAY FINAL FANTASY ILL EXPLODE!!!
Now, I have a wireless, Bluetooth PS2 controller and a wireless FM PS2 controller and they work fine with Dual Shock 2 installed on them. I would see the problem associated with motion sensors, but if the Wii controller has no issues with motion sensing, then how come Sony wasn't able to develop something similar without getting themselves sued. I believe Sony will pull through eventually.
The PS3 could still differentiate 7 controllers with 4 LED lights. Use 2 LEDs for controllers 5, 6, and 7.
As for the motion sensitivity, that feature is a growing trend that Sony is hoping to capitalize on with next gen capable games.
As for the same design, the button layout is one that is frequently used by several controllers: D-pad on the left, four buttons angled on the right, and two joysticks in the middle. It also decreases the time it takes to relearn controls for new games and increases compatibility with older games.
I'm upset at the loss of the dual-shock but that had to happen with the law suit and the super-sensitive motion detection.
I definitely think PS3 will hold its own come November 17.
That's total crap! I mean wtf? How in christ's name is that copying the nintendo controller, it looks exactly the same as the PS1 and PS2 Controller!
The Wii controller is just a stupid gimmick, just like the touch screen on the damn DS.
I have played Gamecube, Xbox, and PS2. I have also played X-360. Im going to admit, that I am biased towards PS2. Sure Xbox's flagship video game is Halo, but that is one game, what others are there? PS2 has better titles than both Gamecube and Xbox. Now you are saying, this is all speculation, you cant prove that PS2 is better than any other system, and you cant prove that PS3 will be better than the existing consoles.
Lets take a look at sales.
Xbox & Xbox 360 combined - 24 million and 5 million respectively for a total of 29 million consoles.
Nintendo Gamecube - 21 million respectively.
PlayStation 2- 106 million consoles respectively. Sony MUST be doing something right here...
The numbers dont lie. If you were to combine the sales of Gamecube, and both Xbox consoles, it wouldnt even equal half of what PS2 has sold.
Now for the PS3. I am sure many of you have read that the PS3 is capable of 2.18 TeraFLOPS, or Floating point Operations Per Second, which is used to measure a computers performance. To put that in perspective, a modern day desktop computer will run at a few GigaFLOPS.
So to answer anyone's question about which system is more powerful, performance wise, its the PS3.
Now, I have been reading up about the consoles and Have found out that PS3 will be out with HD ports for 600 dollars. Among my research, I found that Microsoft will be releasing an HD add-on for the 360 that will cost in the area of around $200. The 360 premium system is at $400. Combined with the $200 HD add-on, you have a PS3 with shittier graphics, less power, and a smaller hard drive for the same amount of money. Congrats, you just kicked yourself in your own ass.
And for a previous post about PS3 games being in upwards of $70, they are debuting at 59.99, I believe.
Even if Sony's tilt sensitive controller is a blatant rip off of nintendo's inovations, I don't see why it's such a big deal. After all, it seems to me that gamecube's rumble feature was copied from the Duelshock controller. Everybody copies everybody else and the consumer wins in the end because the good ideas will thrive and the bad ideas will die.
Besides, the most important thing is that all the conrtrols are wireless. Screw wires!
Disapointing that the rumble feature is gone in the PS2 controller :(
it doesn't matter that it looks like it always did. the dualshock was perfect and im glad they didnt change it.
i HATE that controller. it's the most uncomfortable piece of crap ever. i was starting to get excited about playing a new playstation controller. it may have looked strange, but how did it feel?!
Eh while i kind of agree with you all, sony copy and do a bad bad job of it... but its not a direct copy of the wiimote... but what it is a direct copy of is a very old contoller, (looking at an old pc mag with it in it and its 39 pounds) a microsoft controller.... the microsoft sidewinder freestyle gamepad... the add....
Innovative motion sensing technology - move your bike by tilting the game pad (it came with motocross madness)
July 2000 pc gamer.... and it was old then....
It's the third time around and it still looks the damn same!

I love how the fanboys just don't read. Where did it say that Sony ripped anything off from Nintendo? Also, the lawsuit was against both Sony and Microsoft. Yes the Wii will be sweet, and I plan to get one after I get a PS3 but still, there are some drawbacks to it compared to the 360 and the PS3. When will the fanboys take their blindfolds off?
The thing to think of...
How many times did Nintendo change thier controller?
Why did XBox make two different controllers?
How perfect is the PS (1/2/3) controller?
the DualShock design (maybe not the first one) is perfect. There isn't another way to put it. There's almost no learning curve, just the gyro. It doesn't matter what anyone else does...PS has the perfect controller.
Sorry about that...I just had a fanboy seizure...lol this next post is more meaningful
Who really cares if is was a rip off? If Sony added something to improve on what they got, whether it is a "stolen" idea or not who cares. I wouldn't give sony crap for making improvements.
Nintendo is revolutionary and great, and their motion sensor will be way better than sony's so why are u guys complaining about sony stealing the idea.
I think that it is a good idea for any company to do whatever they can to deliver the best product they are capable of, PERIOD!!!
the ps3 is a rip off that brings nothing new to the table. in terms of the "regular" style of gameing, xbox360 is a much better console with much better games. Now for the Wii, which will do better than many of you think it will. The wii brings something new to the table with its controller as well as an online multiplayer experience(for free) and the virtual console. All priced well below the other two consoles! PS3 is a joke, it is simply relying on hype from past Ps2 sucess. 360 and wii will dominate this generation. Only morons and fanboys of playstation will get ripped by sony.
It's all about how this will fit in with the games that come out. Shameless copying is a moot point, everybody else does it. Take the iPod's touch controls, how many similar implementations by other companies are out there?
Wow...a lot of input here. I think that they did rip off Wii, BUT it isn't a waste because it depends on the game. I know that some games use the side lean(whatever you call it) to the left and right to access menues i.e. a map or weapon choices. This way you don't have to worry about other buttons or taking your eyes off the screen. I WOULD like it to have more influence in the game play though.
If you love Grant Turismo or any other racing game out there which is compatible with PS2 or PS3 you know that Dual Shock controler is irreplaceable, none of the controlers come cloes in the world of racing games.
ok.. so yea.. i heard the ps3 wireless controller can act lik the wii .. motion sensitive.. so while playin a driving game.. i should be able to turn the controller.. and the car should turn.. but it does not . . . im confused. help?
